Summary: Glued From Start to Finish....
Review: I'll be the first to admit, it's hard for me to get through a King novel. Most of the time I find him a bit too wordy, but this book got my attention from page one! Desperation is over 700 pages long and I read it in 2 days. This is an excellent King novel and it keeps you on the edge of your seat! Highly recommended for King fans and folks who are on the fence about his writing! My fav King book by far!!!!! Check it out!

Summary: Simply the best
Review: How do you describe this book? Well, if you haven't already got it...GET IT!!! This is by far one of the best books i have read. I know The Regulators was published along side Desperation but I found The Regulators disappointing. Takes a while to get into it. In my opinion Desperation is one of Stephen's finest achievements. Great plot. Great characters. Great story line. Keeps you engrossed. Superb book. Buying it is money well spent.

Summary: An under-rated, under-sold GREAT read!
Review: Tak!
Hee, hee... for the fans of Stephen King who haven't gotten this book... What in the world could you possibly be waiting for?! King's character developement has always been good... here (like "The Stand")it's esceptional! As I read this I literally tuned out the rest of the world and focused on nothing but the book... (which by the way, if your married I don't recommend doing... she got REALLY upset) Another thing that King excelled in (again like "The Stand") was his attention to detail... an area where he never really faltered anyway.

The Nevada town of Desperation hides a secret known to few... known to even fewer is the Evil in that secret. By coincidence, or perhaps fate, a group of strangers is brought to this town... and while here they discover the murderous secret that has ravaged the town... streets are empty, doors unlocked, bicycles laying upside-down in the streets with no children laying claim to them... 'What's going on?'... the typical horror question, true, but an all to real one.

Summary: King does downers
Review: OMG I couldn't get past about the 5th chapt. This is true torture. Mr. King, I am a avid reader of your books. I don't mind a bit dark. This is repulsive. Right up there with Cujo.
Why don't you throw this in the fire and go back to Gunslinger. Finish what you've started. This was awful.

Summary: Under-Rated for Stephen King
Review: This was the first Stephen King book that I picked up, and it's the only Stephen King book that I have been able to make it completely through at least four times.

The first page will have you cringing... I'd hate to tell you just because it would give it away, but I'll bet Amazon already has a "look inside" view on it, so check out the very first page!! That will show you just how much Stephen King digs into his own mind to come up with weird and crazy thing in this book.

In short, the story pretty much sums up to be a lot of people who by coincidence end up together in Desperation, Nevada; a "dead" mining town where about nobody lives. Tak, the evil guy, takes over other human bodies in able to decieve the good.

The reason I gave the book four stars instead of five... I love this book, I really do. However, I decided to also get "Regulators" since I had heard it was similar to Desperation. Okay, you can't read one after the other. It just doesn't work unless you wait at least a year. The whole thought of the brother and sister in Desperation being married in Regulators made the book a disaster. I never did get through the fourth page of Regulators, I just couldn't stand it.

But, all in all, it is a very good book. I hope that you can get a hold of it. It is extremely under-rated!

Summary: This book is way underrated!
Review: I bought this book on sale and at the time never heard of it (I think it was 6 or 7 years old). I've read The Stand also and this book is way better. The beginning middle and end were all exciting. No slow parts and for being 7 or 8 hundred pages long, it read extremely fast. I love books that are unpredictable and this one is tied with Lord of the Rings for most unpredictable book on my list! This book has an awesome villain and the story behind him and how he came to be is terrific and scary. The setting of a desert town was the perfect fit for this story also, very easy to visualize just about anything in it. Out of my list of books that are the easiest to visualize, this one, LOTR and Dreamcatcher (also by Mr. King) are on top with story 1 of Hearts of Atlantis!!! Give this book a shot, again, it's VERY UNDERRATED!

Summary: A great read by a great writer
Review: As an avid reader of King, I must say after recently re-reading "Desperation" that it is one of his best, especially from a character development standpoint. One of King's strengths, in my humble opinion, is telling stories from multiple character's perspectives. It was incredibly well done in "The Stand," and showcased again in this book.

The weight of religion is felt throughout the book, and that may be the only thing that I really found even the least bit objectionable. Obviously, I am not a religious man. However, even that had a redeeming quality to it. While faith in God is presented as important in the book, an almost equally important part is the constant reminder that God is cruel, very cruel. Especially to our heroes in the book.

And how about those characters? King is one of those authors who can give you a feeling of what a person is all about without boring you with too much back story. The result is you actually care about these people, and the story still moves along and a rapid pace.

I highly recommend this book to all King fans, or anyone for that matter.

Summary: One of his best
Review: DESPERATION is probably my favorite Stephen King book, right next to NEEDFUL THINGS, I think. That aside, it's also one of his best books. Like many people I read THE REGULATORS first (also five stars), but I much preferred DESPERATION. The terror in this book is extremely menacing and nonstop. But probably the most talked about part of this book is the religious angle. Some people feel it's too preachy or tries too hard to say God exists. That's not it in the least. The book is about faith (faith in anything, and in this case, God). The character of David has such a pure, unwavering faith that may misstep a little when confronted with the horros of the book (and they are horrors and they are many), but it never falters. I may sound like a putz but I cried my eyes out when I finished this book (and I'm an atheist).

This may be "genre fiction", but it's one of the best books I've read in recent years. If you're a horror fan, a suspense/thriller fan, or a fan of "straight fiction", you'll be satisfied with this book. It has everything.

Summary: The king is back
Review: Few years ago I was enlighted to see that after not so good Insomnia and Rose Madder, this was a refreshing breeze.
This is scary and weird, intense fewerish nightmare !
You MUST read also The Regulators; that one is even more out there.
