Rating: Summary: i read it while driving thru NEVADA...creepy... Review: i thought this book was pretty good. it was, at least, about a million times better than it's partner, 'the regulators'. and the few boring parts (for instance, johnny marinville's little daydreams about his life) are easily outweighed by the really great ones. the book gets a bit slow near the end but for the most part was chilling! i should add that it takes place in nevada, which i was going thru at the time i read it. probably added to the realism, if anything!
Rating: Summary: stick to short fiction, stephen, my boy Review: As a writer, I absolutely hated this book. You must have an incredible suspension of disbelief in order to even begin to like it. Using the "God" device became highly repetitive and even more highly predictable, even worse than the Wesley Crusher syndrome. The rest of the book was fairly well constructed until it came to the end, when it looks to me as if King suddenly realized the deadline was tomorrow and had to tie it up too quickly. He has the potential to be a classic author if he'll only stick to short stories.
Rating: Summary: gory hard to follow tale Review: So far I've read 5 sk novels and this is my least favorite. It has gory details and parts that make you shiver(from the gore) but thats about it. That cop gave me the creeps at first but then it wore off fast! There were to many things to remember, like con tas,can taks, can cans, & can tamatoes. good details but it dosen't make this one a top contender with other ones i've read
Rating: Summary: Desperation is a very good book. Review: While reading Desperation, one is drawn into a world of seemingly archaic folklore and believable characters. As with several of Steven King's books, an undercurrent of the classic good-vs-evil motif is cleverly balanced with humor and mystery. Several of the story arcs revolve around the excavation of an old mine that collapsed in the past killing many miners. A small child wanders into the newly reopened mine, and unknowingly becomes the host of an evil parasitic entity. This cycle of body-snatching and psychological terror presents several of the characters with dilemmas. I highly recommmend this novel. It ranks up with classic Steven King novels. The reader may also be interested to know that The Regulators by Richard Bauchman is somewhat of the sister novel to Desperation. This is even evident with the covers of these hardback novels.
Rating: Summary: Feel the terror that comes from the heart of the unformed. Review: I've read this book late at nights, and I can tell you that it is most scary! There were times that I was really scared. There are phrases that have stuck to my mind and some times I wonder if there is logic behind the fiction... Read it ... and feel the terror that comes from the heart of the unformed. Tak!
Rating: Summary: This is not King at his best Review: Although I found this book reasonably satisfying, it does not stand comparison with some of his greatest work, such as The Stand and The Shining. The ridiculous practice of naming the characters as in The Regulators (which I read first), prevents the reader from forming a clear image of each person in the book. I have found King's books a strange mixture over the past few years; from the excellence of Rose Madder and The Green Mile to the mediocrity of Gerald's Game and The Regulators. I hope that we have not seen the best of Stephen King.
Rating: Summary: King is Back Review: After a period of stuffy mediocrity, it appears Stephen King is back. I yawned my way through "Dolores" and skimmed briefly some of King's other recent titles, yet felt they all lacked the spark of the magic days of the 1970s when he produced his best work. Until I bought Desperation. This tale is so clever in its handling of a classic storyline. Never have I seen a book so quickly transform an interesting, if gory story into dull, numbing terror as well as this. Recorderd reactions whilst reading this book include cringing, crying out loud with revulsion, shiverring, pulling the bedclothes up tight and nervously turning the pages.. this is a book with everything. In some ways it reminded me of The Stand, with its good vs. evil standoff, yet the timeframe is much more compact, although it is spread over a large number of pages, the story is so intense that we see just about every minute of the action. The story challenges The Shining in its terror, but is arguably more scarifying in that it seems more *real* (references to modern television and technology are testament to this). While the story seems to borrow elements from other King books, it is not any worse off for it, and offers a new perspective on religion and the meaning of faith.
Rating: Summary: I can't understand the problems people are having! Review: I loved this book! For those of you who did not like it I just can't help but think that there is something that you are not getting. I think you should read it again.
Rating: Summary: Desperation Review: This book is thrilling! I am a Floridian, 13 years old. I was awake past midnight, not concerned about the test the next day at school. I was to in depth of Taks evil plans and plots! THIS IS A MUST READ!!!
Rating: Summary: awesome book! Review: I thought this was a very good book. It was a tiny bit confusing in a few place but i understood the main idea and would recommend this book to any SK fan.
