Rating: Summary: His name isn't King for nothing Review: He is the KING of modern literature! Although this was not one of my favorites, it was still overwhelmingly better than most modern novels, as usual. I just can't bring myself to give it lower than 4 stars. There should be another rating system for S.K. alone. As always, SUPERB storytelling and great, believable dialogue and plot. The main thing that I did not like about this book is that it did not explain anything about the tie between this and The Regulators. And I get the feeling there will not be another book involving this particular cast of characters so I wish this had been made more clear. Are they in a time warp? A different astral plane? Who knows? But it is almost completely unimportant because the book can stand alone. I would recommend it to anyone!
Rating: Summary: Entertaining, but where's the payoff? Review: Desperation maintained my interest and kept me flipping ahead trying to find out what happened . But by the end I found myself saying, "That's it? That's the end?" For sheer pleasure, Desperation is a good, fast read and worth your time. But it does have flaws: not enough character development, a fizzled ending, and it was a little too much like The Stand (my favorite novel of all time). Call it "The Stand Light". I hate to call it a hack job, because I do like King, but a good read nonetheless.
Rating: Summary: Real Page-Turner! Review: Thank goodness I bought a copy of this book on a Friday! I started reading and couldn't put it down. Finished all 690 pages in two days! I'm not saying it is a literary classic, but it's the Stephen King, master of horror, we fell in love with and it held my interest and attention from start to finish. The characters were well-developed and believable (I could almost visualize the cast for a future movie-version.) An enjoyable easy read, you'll fly through this one and wish for more!
Rating: Summary: Awfull ! Review: I have read a dozen of King's books, and, although all his books are different and sometimes have flaws, this one was simply a loss of money. Delirious characters, "pure evil" that finally appeared when I was half through the book (I must say I even didn't finish it at all), blood-bath instead of a plot. I am amazed how many people found this book interesting - or are they all under 15 years old?
Rating: Summary: Characters, setting, story...no one does it like King Review: Mary and Peter Jackson are driving his sister's car from Oregon to New York. While going through Nevada on Highway 50, they are stopped by Officer Entragian from the nearby town of Desperation. The cop finds a large bag of marijuana in the trunk and doesn't care that it was left there by Peter's sister--Peter and Mary must come with him to the station. On the way, they pass on RV on the side of the road which has all of its tires flat and the doors banging open in the wind. Why doesn't the cop stop to help the disabled vehicle? On the ride to town, Peter and Mary wonder about the cop's mental stability; when the get to the station, it's no longer a question--the cop has some serious problems--and so do Peter and Mary, as well as some other people, it appears.Johnny Marinville is a National Book Award winner, crossing the country on his Harley, collecting material and stopping for lectures. When he stops at the side of the road to take care of a call of nature, a local policeman, Officer Entragian, is upon him and insists on hauling him in to town. As they go, Johnny notices coyotes at the side of the road--sitting at attention about every fifty feet on both sides of the road. When they get into town, Johnny notices that it is abnormally quiet, even for a small mining town. What will happen to other people who might pass Desperation while speeding down Highway 50? And what's happened to Desperation itself? This is one of King's most gruesome--and most riveting--yet. The reader is horrified yet compelled to continue reading--King's characters are so real we must keep reading in order to find out what happens to them. These characters are us, going about their normal lives, and the weirdness creeps up so slowly that we know that what happens to them could happen to us. The tone and setting, too, are perfect--it is dark and you are alone when you read DESPERATION, so much so that if you go outside you are sure no one will be there--anywhere. As in many of King's books, the theme of Good vs. Evil is a major one here, but with a twist. In DESPERATION, King has shown a specific mechanism of Good, and in this case it's God. King explores various religious themes, including the nature of God and free will vs. predestination, but never gets preachy or sentimental. Characters, setting, story, ideas... King combines these in his magical way like no one else can, and comes up with one of his best novels yet. Kimberly Borrowdale Under the Covers Book Reviews
Rating: Summary: best book i've ever read by sk Review: good X evil battle.... the book is full of twists and surprises whatever your religion is... if you believe in god and like sk you'll love this book I john 4/8 remember!
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: Wow! Is the only expression I could mutter after reading Desperation. One of his best no doubt. Now I'm not saying it was better that Carrie, The Shinning, or the Dark Tower. But a wonderful book, that deals with the power of faith and belief. It was gripping and terrifying at the same time. A definite buy.
Rating: Summary: Desperation Strikes Hard and Fast, and Never Lets Go! Review: I've added this to my "A" list of King's writings. The plot winds and twists and is full of suprises. I picked it up and read it in 2 days. The characters were well thought out and action was described in typical King detail. A must-read!
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: I read Desperation in 4 days. In many ways this novel reminded me of 'Salems Lot. King depicts good and evil in it's TRUE form. The characters and plot were developed in a fashion that absolutely makes this book a MUST READ. I can't wait to read The Regulators
Rating: Summary: Not his best, but very good Review: This book was gripping and given the length, anyone can read it in a short period of time. it pulls you in and won't let go! I recommend it.
