Rating: Summary: Is King a writer or a missionary? Review: This is only the fourth King book I've read, and I'm sick to death of him. The first half I enjoyed. Tightly paced and very readable. There was just way too much Jesus-babble in the second half for my liking, and I grew extremely weary of the characters, all of whom I recognized from other King books and movies. I don't mind religion or spirituality, but King's world view is so narrowly Christian oriented that it alienated me. If I'm reading a horror yarn, I don't want a sermon.
Rating: Summary: Original, Cruel Story Telling Review: I was somewhat nervous about buying this book, after seeing Stephen King slowly disappear behind a curtain of Hollywood and allowing his writing style to do the same, but I was actually impressed. While there were basic flaws in some of the character development and the ending was not nearly as climatic as it could have been, I thought the story to be truly unique and creative, just like the old King I remember. It was crude in fashion, somewhat fantasy and somewhat nightmarish, and it was downright cruel, cutting away the sugar-coated talents of Micheal Crichton and opting for the distinguished over-dramatic brutality of Victor Hugo. Although King is neither of these two, and perhaps not nearly as good of a complex writer, he still clutches to a rung on that Creative ladder that has always been his, no matter how bad his grip seemed to be slipping in the past.
Rating: Summary: PRIME KING Review: Stephen King is not usually my cup of tea but I have to admit he's a master writer and Desperation is King at the top of his form. The plot is tight and well-paced, the characters fully drawn and the setting absolutely perfect. The dialogue goes without saying--it is King at his best, writing in that folksy voice that is as perfect as Mozart. This is a tale of flat-out supernatural horror with a moralistic theme, yet King is never preachy. For those who love Stephen, he doesn't get much better than this.
Rating: Summary: Great reading! Review: Recomended for anyone who needs a good scare. The Sheriff is weird and frighting at the same time! Well done!
Rating: Summary: One of his ABSOLUTE BEST efforts Review: Don't pay attention to the no-brainer reviews below that say it wasn't good. THIS WAS A DAMN GOOD BOOK. The characters are unforgettable, the story is amazing, and the end is a real blast! My only problem is the whole deal with God helping save the day. Normally I have real trouble reading Stephen King, but I finished this in a week's time. TAK!
Rating: Summary: Not one of his better efforts Review: A tiresome, cheezy story, lacking even a single character to care very much about - unless you are a sucker for little boys with God on their side. Throw in (or out) an open pit mine full of gratuitous gore and a creaky structure and you can number this among King's weaker efforts. You want real characters? Read Delores Clayborne. Real scares? Read Thinner or The Library Policeman. A Real Plot? Read The Stand. A Real Bore? Read Desperation.
Rating: Summary: Amazing book...leaves you in suspense and wonder Review: I think this book is very good. This is one of the best books I ever read. Stephen King is da man.I think they should make this a movie starring Anthony Hopkins as Johnny Marinville. I haven't finished the book yet coz I lost it but I love it.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Put It Down Review: This is defintely my favorite Stephen King novel. There is non-stop action all the way to the end. The only down-side to the novel I think was David. He just didn't seem believeable. Other than that this was an excellant novel.
Rating: Summary: Who loses? Review: I just finished reading this, and after looking at some of these reveiws, I wonder why everyone who doesn't like it, says they don't like it because the bad guys aren't stopped in the end. If you think this, then I need to know who you think the bad guys are. They stopped Tak, and some of them survived, so how can you say that they lost. I also thought that the ending was very well done. King had kept the surprises coming up to the very end, which rapt up the story perfectly. In may book, its his second best, right under The Green Mile.
Rating: Summary: Not very good Review: I've read a few of SK's books and I've liked most of them. This one I didn't like too much. It was way too long considering what happened in it. The characters were not interesting enough and I kept mixing them up. As one of the reviewers mentioned; how can the good guys loose when you know that god is on their side? The end was a let-down and where was the suspense?Enough said.
