Rating: Summary: First of all Review: don't read the editorial reviews above. They give away far too much about this book! Desperation is a great story. It tells of several different groups of people: a writer, a widowed wife (you'll find out why), a touring family, and three others-all of whom wind up in the town of Desperation: a seemingly deserted town that herolds a deadly secret: it isn't deserted. The group of survivors, rounded together in the police building by a crazy cop that can't seem to stop bleeding, must now try to escape with their lives before the enraged police officer can track them down and gut them (well, that's basically what he has done to everyone else in the town). I won't say too much more, except to give it time. By the beggining of part 3, everything falls into place, and a rollercoaster of horror and suspense starts that you won't want to stop. Desperation isn't recommended for young people since not only is the profanity abundent, but the sexual (and homosexual) references are very clear and imperative. Steer clear if you can't handle descriptive "body parts".
Rating: Summary: WHAT A GREAT BOOK! Review: this book is a brilliant scare. i couldn't put it down and read it in about 2 days because it is so good. the only bad thing i would say is about the God bits in it, as i can see why some people would find it a bit boring in those parts. i however, didn't mind them in the slightest so don't let that put you off, as it is a really brilliant read.
Rating: Summary: All in all...a pretty good book Review: Definitely a very insightful book. I'm not one for reading "Cristian" books, but it added to the story. Especially with the war between the two Gods. I encourage everyone to read this book whether they like King of not!
Rating: Summary: Oh my gosh, Tak! Review: Hi, another great Stephen King book for you. Here is a little about it. When a strange, evil power called Tak enters the body of a cop and stalks Desperation, Navada, the people there did not have a chance. But will the people he has been catching and locking up meet the same fate? Or will a young boy's faith and power keep them going?
Rating: Summary: King is king! Review: Desperation was...well, GREAT! Stephen King has really written a page burner here. He returns to his old grounds with a supernatural horror/thriller but that is by far too simple of a description for what Desperation is. The book has a really great cast of characters who you really begin to care for and see some of each one in yourself. Also the way the King has set this book up is magnificent in that it fits together perfectly and delivers the story in a grand way that produces the great reading that I have now come to expect from King. I have read a handful of King's other books and I would have to say that this is my favorite. I enjoyed the Green Mile but I loved this one even more. I can't wait to get my hands on The Regulators. If you have ever read Stephen King and liked it then get this one. If you have never read one of his books this is a great place to start. Enjoy the addiction.
Rating: Summary: GREAT Review: It had me from the first chapter.....creepy and gory at times, but a great Stephen King novel. Lots of plot and great characters.......Stephen King is one of the best writers and this book is another example. I don't think I've ever read a bad King novel...not yet, and doubt I ever will. Absoulutely recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Desperation you could feel in each character Review: Excellent book. Couldn't put it down. The characters were interesting and there were smooth transitions in plot between them. Completely unpredictable and intense. Stephen King at his best!
Rating: Summary: One of the worst books ever written Review: The reason "Desperation" exists is to provide the most compelling reason why Dean Koontz and Robert McCammon are the superior writers in the horror genre. This is a PATHETIC piece of writing. The only thing it does for me is two things--1, it makes me wonder what Stephen King ever did to deserve a large audience, and 2, it shows that the man is merely spinning his wheels at this stage. The characters are flatter than a piece of sheet metal, the story drags into the predicatably stormy realms of horror, and has ZERO interesting characters. Worst of all, King steals from Charles Grant by concocting the antagonist from the "Posession" source; the one that uses humans as a carton for its evil foundation. This book is so utterly, horrifyingly bad, that if I ran a book store it wouldn't be allowed on the shelves (along with many other King novels). Stephen King said it best himself when he claimed that he was the literary equivalent of McDonalds. But I'll take a Big Mac any day over this drivel!
Rating: Summary: LET THE BATTLE BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL BEGIN Review: I began this book on February 24 and finished it on March 1 (yes, one week). I have only read two other Stephen King books: The Green Mile and Cycle of the Werewolf. I gave both of them a "Good, but..." review. Then I read Desperation, and was amazed. It sounded pretty boring at first, but as I kept on reading, I didn't want to stop. Before I knew it, I was done with it. Now right after I read a book or see a movie, I like it or hate it. But as time passes, I realize how much I like (or hate) it. So I waited a week or so, and I realized how much I loved it. The characters are so well introduced, and the hatred that builds inside you for the antagonist is incredible. Now I am extremely afraid to go to any western state. I swear, if I see so much as a vulture, a coyote, a spider, or a mine, I will freak out and run for my dear life. I guarantee to anyone who reads this book: you will like it. If you don't, you seriously need to get a life. Tak!
Rating: Summary: Better than its counterpart...King at his best! Review: King has done it again with this great book. I finished it in less than 5 days, reading every second i possibly could. King's absolute genius shows here as he comes out with a great plot. He throws a bunch of things your way, seemingly irrelevant, until the end. At the end he manages to tie everything together so closely only a true genius could think of it. Although there are a lot of characters to keep track of, you find yourself not only doing just that, but also feeling like you have known them your whole life. A definite must-read, King-fan or not!
