Summary: Sookie is Back
Review: Sookie Stackhouse is back. In the third book of the Southern Vampire series Sookie has to rescue her boyfriend, Vampire Bill, again. There are a few things that make the rescue difficult from the start, Sookie has the feeling Bill doesn't love her anymore, there may be another woman in his life and Sookie's entre into the Misssissippi supernatural world is Alcide, a handsome, warm, thoughtful, very sexy werewolf. There's much more El...Bubba in this book. Club Dead is another fun read from Charlaine Harris and may be the best of the series to date.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Club Inconsistent.
Review: The enjoyment factor on the Southern Vampire series is high. The consistency level on this particular novel is remarkably low.

The authoress, in her previous two novels, introduces characters that (I assume) are important to the progress of Sookie's life. In Club Dead, many of them are insignificant. Take Sam (my favourite Collie), for example- she spends two novels creating a grand tension between he and Sookie and then completely NEGATES his value in novel three. He makes more of a cameo appearance than anything else. Furthermore, we're introduced to Alcede (another lycanthrope), who acts as a sort of "red herring" in the romantic sense. We've still got Eric ( an old, lusty vampire) hot for Sookie's pants AND Bill to account for, not to mention the almost non-existent Sam. The threads begin to unravel at the onset of so many viable guys.

Which brings me around to another fine topic; what of Bill? Bill, Sookie's boyfriend and cheating, devious vampire lover (I've never liked Bill). He runs off to complete a secret mission (which is another definite lack of cohesion) and then-BAM-he falls back in love with an old flame-Lorena the Vampire. This is the second of a major incoherence-We're told NOTHING of Bill and Lorena's past. Since we aren't given an opportunity to understand the ties that bind them to one another, we're left in the dark about events that precipitate the motion of the plot. We only see Lorena, very briefly, when she and Sookie have an "encounter". So, to the reader, it seems as if Bill has simply run off (with no depth of complexity or reasoning) with some other chick. It's another loose thread that, sadly, accounts for many character motivations.

I can only hope Harris wraps Sookie's life a little tighter to home with the next novel. The charm is in the South, with familiar peoples, whom we've grown to know by now, and a tighter plot line. I'd love to see her easy, sweet style find its roots again.

Summary: And you think your relationship problems are bad...
Review: Everyone has little bumps and snags in their relationships, and being told your significant other is cheating on you isn't unusual. But what do you do if your boyfriend happens to be a vampire who has been kidnapped and is held in a rival vampire territory? This is just one of the problems facing Sookie Stackhouse, psychic and friend to all kinds of supernatural beings. Sookie isn't moody or heavy like Hamilton's Anita Blake, but she does have her share of darker problems, and this book is the first in the series to really take a close look at those. Fans of Charlaine Harris's light-but-in-no-way-fluffy Southern Vampire Mystery Series will enjoy this deeper look into the life of her engaging heroine, Sookie Stackhouse.

Summary: Good, but not great
Review: I love Charlaine Harris! Her writing is clean and fresh. And the worlds she creates in her novels feel comfortable and homey - even when terrible things happen. And for this reason, I'm giving Club Dead four stars rather than three. I have some problems with this installment in the Southern Vampire series. Most of my complaints are with the way the story wrapped up - or rather didn't wrap up. In fact, the book felt unfinished. I feel like there were two or three more conversations that people needed to have before the book ended. But they never happened. So, I was disappointed with where the book stopped. Also, I was starting to get annoyed with how often and how severely Sookie is attacked. I wanted to see her 'in action' more. These are relatively minor complaints because I love this series, and I look forward to more. Every series has a weak link, I suppose.
If you haven't done so already, check out Harris's Shakespeare series. Lily Bard is a great character you'll love - edgier than Sookie, but still a lot of fun.

Summary: A Girl With A Little Extra
Review: I couldn't wait to get my greedy little hands on this book! The poor folks at Waldenbooks must've wanted to bar me from the store. I'm guessing Charlaine Harris and Laurell K. Hamilton are e-mail buddies or something of the sort. The writing is great, kept me in suspense, and I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and their quirks. I can't wait for the next book!

Summary: Sookie keeps getting better!
Review: This was my favorite so far of the "Dead" series. Sookie is growing up, and her life just keeps getting more complicated. She's learning some hard lessons, but she handles them with grace. I had a hard time putting this one down, especially during the action.

I only gave it 4 stars because I reserve 5 for the books I am obsessed about, and this series hasn't quite reached that level. However, just because it might not win any awards, doesn't mean it isn't highly entertaining!

Summary: strong blend of horror, mystery and romance genres
Review: On an alternate Earth, vampires came out of the closet when synthetic was made readily available and at least in the United States they receive the same rights as humans. Sookie Stackhouse, a very powerful telepath, has been dating Bill for over a year and is very happy with him, but also has noticed her vampire lover has distanced himself from her. He disappears one day, telling her he is going to Seattle for business. Later she learns from Bill's boss Eric that he was planning to dump her and go back to his vampire lover.

She finds out that the vampire king of Mississippi kidnapped Bill to gain top secret knowledge from him. Sookie goes to Jackson to infiltrate the vampire community there. A werewolf who owes the vampires a favor takes her to the CLUB DEAD where she is badly injured trying to save a vampire about to be staked. She is taken to the King's compound where Bill is held. She attempts a daring rescue knowing if she fails she will be tortured and killed.

Charlaine Harris blends elements from the horror, mystery and romance genres to create a novel that is refreshingly unique. Readers will admire the heroine who goes through a lot of pain, both physical and emotional, to try and save her two timing boyfriend. She meets a werewolf who she is attracted to but they are both on the rebound so they agree to wait awhile before they begin a new relationship. Readers will not have a minuscule of sympathy towards Bill who brought all his troubles upon himself. CLUB DEAD is a real live treat.

Summary: A Most Delightful and Refreshing Read
Review: First of all, it is hard not to love a character whose name is Sookie Stackhouse. Sookie. Everytime I say the name I cannot help but smile. Indeed, Sookie is one of the most endearing and delightful characters I have encountered in quite a while. She possesses an admirable strength of spirit and courage (even if she does not want to admit to it) and at the same time a sensitivity and innocence and humor that makes you care for and about her. Sookie may be a cutie on the outside, but she's also one tough cookie on the inside.

I soared through this book and read it in one sitting. It was a wonderful read. Trouble is on the horizon as the book begins. Bill has become increasingly absorbed in his "project" and takes off on a mission out of town while Sookie is left feeling alienated and brushed aside. Those feelings deepen intensely when Eric reveals to Sookie the personal nature of Bill's departure. When Bill goes missing, as in *poof*, Sookie is out to save the day, her man, and get even if she can. You go girl!

I immensely enjoyed the new character of Alcine. What a winner! Eric emerges as a charming, valiant hero, albeit with ulterior motives. Readers can see that his feelings for Sookie are deeping, which makes the interaction between the two characters that much more enticing.

My only problem with the book is that I rather despised Bill by the end of the book. He comes across with very little redeeming value and I hope that he proves his worth in the books to come.

I cannot wait for the next one!

Summary: Club Dead is "Dead On"
Review: This book had everything going for it. I like the introduction of Alcide and all the other weres and shifters. I especially liked more info on Eric. Who could resist a Viking! Bubba gives the book great comedy. All of the vamps personalities have been expanded on to good advantage. Sookie is really developing into a well-rounded person. I loved it and can't wait for the next one.
