Rating: Summary: quite possibly my scariest story ever Review: This book is an all time classic. I'm not even going to try to sell newcomers to this book, because if you haven't read it by now, you need to take a new perspective on your reading entertainment. I was 16 when I read first read this book. I was staying with my brother that summer and he was out partying with friends. I was in his rickety, creaking old house all by myself on a stormy night (I'm not making this up!). I got to the scene when the hedge animals started moving and got so scared I had to put the book down while thunder was shaking the foundation and lightning was flashing in the windows. I was wishing my brother was home and happened to glance down at a review quote that was on the back cover. It said something like "don't read this book alone at home on a stormy night". I thought about that for a moment and ran screaming from the room. Talk about impact. This book SCARED me!
Rating: Summary: Review for The Shining Review: In my opinion, The Shining is a great book, and it will continue to impress the readers of tomorrow. King has written a classic for all time in The Shining. It all starts with Danny, a child blessed with the Shining. The Shining is kinda like a sixth sense. Things can be sensed, and people can communicate with their minds. It all starts with Danny's father getting a job at the Overlook Hotel. He is to watch over the creepy hotel for the winter. A murder, and a suicide haunt the hotel. Soon, a bunch of creepy events start to plague the family staying at the hotel. A hornet's nest, bombed and dead, regenerates hornets that sting Danny, or Doc. Doc ventures up later on to the room of the lady that committed suicide in the bathtub. While he mutters that everything is a dream, count to ten, and the dream will disappear, the woman's disgusting looking corpse rises out of the bathtub and hurts Doc. Doc runs downstairs with scratches on him, and red marks. The mother, thinking that the father has beat Doc up, tries to keep Doc sheltered. The family situation starts to go downhill until the end of the book. Many other scenes of weirdness happpens, and Doc, fearing for his life, calls the cook of the hotel via the Shining. He starts from Florida and goes all the way to Colorado, where the hotel is. Doc's father meanwhile, is starting to lose his sanity, and wants to basically kill his family and fall into favor with the spirits of the hotel. The father grows worse and worse, until the end of the book, where he hurts the Mother, and starts after Doc too. The cook arrives and tries to help but gets hurt as well. The father chases after Doc and regains some of his sense and tells Doc to run, then the Dad rebels against the spirits of the hotel and blows it up, with the family escaping with the cook. The book needs a sequel however. I'd personally love to read the next one. If there is a sequel, then I'm an idiot, but I really want this story to continue on.
Rating: Summary: A great title Review: I really enjoyed the book. As pointed out in the intro by KIng (and by the last review) this book has a lot simplier prose than later books, but its just so good! Things intertwine, the characters are strong, the stroy is well-paced. And, 'o course, its scary. Its a great way to start off on KIng books.
Rating: Summary: READ IT NOW!!! Review: At first, this book was kinda boring. Once, you get into it, you can't put it down! This is definately Stephen King's scariest book. I was kind of disappointed with the ending. I recommend this to everyone!
Rating: Summary: The Ultimate Cabin Fever Review: This is the first novel of King work that I read. I had first seen the Kubrick movie and I was scared to death. I had to read the book. I was surprised at the differences. As I got further along in the story, I felt I was inside the minds of these three characters. The dillusions, the voices, the ghosts, the masks. When I completed this novel, I was still thinking about it for hours after. What struck me as the most frightening was that somthing like this COULD happen! Not the SHINING that Danny possessed, of course, but the mental breakdown of this man, stuck in a huge hotel for months with no one but his wife and young son. The mind is a powerful force. It can make you believe things that aren't real. You'll hear things that aren't there to be heard. You'll see things that aren't there to be seen. King goes into a lot of reality with this book, and the mind can be the scariest monster of all. I HIGHLY recommend this novel as a first KING read.
Rating: Summary: Ridiculously Great!!! Review: I am not an avid reader, and read very little. But when I started reading this book, I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.The whole book was so real, especially the sequence in room 217.
Rating: Summary: Very cripy Review: The novel is excellent! I highly recommended it. I've seen other styles online such as Ouranos. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Very cripy Review: I believe this novel to be one of King's best. When Kubrick put his magic to it, it really came to life. There are many that have follwed in line in terms of style....
Rating: Summary: The Shining Review: The Shining By: Stephen King reviewed by: j.y. Kim period:6 the book, The Shining, is by Stephen King. it is about a family of three, who stay at a hotel called the overlook for the winter and spring. the parents, Jack and Wendy torrance, look at it as a new beginining. however, their son, Danny Torrance knows tat something is not right and also knows that they are in grave danger. during the winter, te father, jack, somehow gets possessed by the evils of the hotel and tries to kill his wife, wendy, and his son, danny. but in the end, the overlook hotel blows up with Jack in it while wendy and danny is safe outside. i liked this book very much. it was very scary and it was a thriller. naturally, i am very fond of Stephen King's books. the thing i like about it is that it sort of, in a way shows how families would act if they didn't get along with eachother. my favorite part of the story was when Jack was going after Danny and saying," Danny, you have done something wrong. come here and take your madicine like a man." i don't know why i like that part but i just do. it is very interesting.
