Rating: Summary: One of my First Review: I read The Shining with Carrie and Salem's Lot in a multi-novel book in April. Compared to the other two, The Shining creates a catagory all of its own. It's amazing how he pieced this novel together. It begins with a family moving up to the Overlook Hotel. The father is to be the caretaker so the family gets to live there during the winter while it is closed. One the first day they are there, a boy (the only child in the family) meets the cook, and finds out a little bit about how he "shines". As our story continues, we learn more about the family, as well as the history of this hotel. And as more is revealed, the fear and horror builds. The rising action is magnificent, and the father's corruption was absolutely brilliant. With a climax that will blow your mind, and characters that feel like you can reach out and touch, The Shining is one of King's top five best books he's written. I reccomend this book to fans of the genre, and also to people interested in reading a good book. The Shining is just plain entertaining, and you'll think about it for months after closing it, only to open it up again and relive the adventure one more time. - MB
Rating: Summary: An all time classic novel Review: Full disclosure: I admire Stephen King's writing. This is not to say I like everything he's produced---"It" was one of the stupidest novels I've ever opened, and I put it down after slogging through the first 50 pages---but when he's good, he's VERY good. The Shining is one of his best, and it is indeed excellent. If you've seen the Kubrick film of the same name, don't be fooled---Kubrick told a different story from the original, having apparently no understanding of the fact that the evil being, as King conceived it, was NOT simply a product of an alcoholic's fall from sobriety, but was a separate entity that took advantage of the chinks in an alcoholic's armor. One of the prior reviewers of this book evidently missed that point as well, going on at length about how the mind is a powerful force, etc. B.S. This isn't a book about the depths of the human psyche, it's about accumulated evil taking on a life of its own to trap the sick---or the gifted. It's a recurring theme in King's fiction: little evils build up and develop within a physical structure or entity, evolving into a force that can attack the unwary or the weak. We see it in his other decent (but not great) works, Cujo and Christine. Bottom line: if you want to choose the best of a gifted writer's work, The Shining is one of the books you should own. Salem's Lot, The Stand (choose the author's cut, not the original edition--it's longer, but so much the better, because it's that good!), Misery, The Dead Zone, and On Writing are the others I'd recommend. Second tier books are Firestarter, Cujo, Christine, Carrie, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and Eye of the Dragon. The rest I either haven't read, don't remember (which means they probably bored me) or don't think are very good. Avoid "IT" at all costs!
Rating: Summary: Stephen's always great! Review: Great book. I still haven't read a king novel that i did not enjoy. His brilliant developement of characters is what makes his stories so great and believable. This book is downright spooky! A must-read for any King fan. I'd also recomend reading Bag of Bones and The Stand.
Rating: Summary: Hair-raising; One of King's best! Review: "THE SHINING" may be long, but it's so good, you just don't want it to end! The thrills and chills never let up-and neither do the enormous words-and the surprises keep on coming! If you loved the 1980 classic film adaptation of this brilliant piece of art, you won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: Classic King...... Review: This is a Stephen King classic, and is rendered my many fan's his best work ( i disagree, however, with 'Salems Lot & a few others being his best work IMHO). What is so suspensful about this book is the fact that you don't know when the main character, Jack Torrance, is going to explode and turn into the homocidal maniac Mr. King describes indrirectly in great detail he is. While this is a disturbing and very suspensful, it does tend to drag on and on a bit, sagging the story line - which was the only reason i brought it to 4 stars. Great novel - highly reccomended!
Rating: Summary: Couldn't stop reading this Review: This has to be Stephen King's masterpiece. I've always loved the movie (the original film with Nicholson) and I just recently bought the book. The print version devotes a lot more time to character development and there are considerable differences between the movie and the book. If you're a fan of the movie, don't deprive yourself of this book!
Rating: Summary: The Shining is #2 on my list Review: Stephen King is a great author. My two favorite books ever written were done by him. The Stand is the best book that he has ever written. Close behind it is the Shining. The Shining is a clasic that is not a thing like the movie. I think that anyone that likes to read should read this book and thoes that do not like to read should read it even more. This book will make you think alot. It is one of those books that once you pick it up there is no putting it back down. This is a definate read. [...]
Rating: Summary: The Best of King Review: Personally, it is my favorite of King's works. The complexities of Jack and his son are so intertwined and far out there that I read the book twice to absorb it all. The writing is chilling, and the grotesque horror sequences kept me up late into the night. One of the few books that scared me, and that is truly saying something. Though the movie is great, I find that the book is certainly better. Don't you even dare watching the mini-series, because it is horrible (even though it's somewhat faithful to the book). A complex and scary read.
Rating: Summary: Murder at the Over look Hotel Review: In the Shining the young Danny Torance has an imaginary friend who shows him the future. Danny also has the ability to read other people's minds. Danny's father becomes the winter caretaker in The Overlookd Hotel which is in the mountains miles away from any town. The hotel has been run throught it's history by some very evil people, and the hotel has had very strange deaths occure in it. The Overlook hotel has a life of its own with all the dead souls traped within it. The hotel trys to control Danny's father so that he can kill his family in order for the hotel to receive the boys unique power. But in ordr to save his family Danny must use his power to call for help.I was amazed at how the author portrayed this seemingly harmless hotel as the souce of so much evil.
Rating: Summary: you can check in..... Review: a family moves into a haunted hotel! the man is a recovering alcoholic, supposed to take care of the hotel for the winter (it's closed to public). the boy has terrible visions and some telepathic skills. there's a mother too. the hotel lies for itself....... (of course). the hotel lives. the otel tries to posess. it's actually hard to tell more. there are a lot of details and happenings here. but i would say this is more a playful story than a plot-driven. all in all, i wasn't completely satisfied with the plot. i didn't get the facts straight. there was actually quite a lot of unclearity, that's why i've never seen the acclaimed greatness. details, yes. cool happenings, yes. but exactly what/why......? for a man who likes to create plot, this wasn't that great. but it's suspenceful, lovely details, fast-paced.
