Summary: A book filled with moments of startling horror and vividness
Review: THE SHINING, the fifth bestselling horror novel by Stephen King, is ultimately a novel which, in its final moments, manages to transcend its strange prose mixture of pulp magazine-type chills and Lovecraftian horror imagery to deal with deeper concepts, such as the enduring legacy of evil and parental love. Set during a cold, icy winter in a Colorado Hotel, King constantly switches his point of view between various narrators- the caretaker, a failed writer named Jack Torrance who is combating alcoholism, his wife, Wendy, and their young son, Danny, who has a peculiar supernatural ability to see visions of terror.
The hotel, The Overlook, is haunted by various ghosts- the spirits of the suicides, the murdered, those who died in strange ways, and, as the winter goes on, these ghosts begin to drive Jack Torrance insane, finally leading him to wage a terrifying game of cat-and-mouse with the others in the hotel.
And only his son, Danny, who can see the cause of the carnage in the visions he recieves, can put an end to his father's rampage.

Unfortunately, King takes too long to set up his exposition, and when the shocks finally come, they burst too rapidly together to allow the reader to fully absorb the impact of what exactly is happening. A good book in concept, but the pacing, as described above, is slightly flawed. Another masterwork from a genious in his field.

Summary: A horror story worthy of Edgar Allan Poe and Robert Bloch!
Review: The Shining, a late-70's horror novel by Stephen King is so frightening and weirdly effective that you may find yourself up late into the night after closing the book. The story in its self is very complex and contains numerous sub-plots. These include the dis-banding of a family, a father's struggle with alcoholism and sanity, a young boy's uncanny ability to see into the future, and a wife's worries about all that is going on. Like any true horror story, The Shining takes place in a looming, scary building-The Overlook Hotel, which, much like Castle Dracula is a place filled with ghosts and horror. Although the novel may start off slowly, once it gets going, it does not stop until the last page. Stephen King effectively uses symbolism and alliteration to make the unique story come alive. The Shining is reminicent of Poe's stories of madness and even will remind one of Rober Bloch's creation, Norman Bates. King reassures us that horror writing is alive and well. The Shining is a book that you will not soon forget

Review: In an episode of "Friends" from a few months ago, wediscover that Joey keeps his copy of "The Shining" in thefreezer-just to be sure the spooks don't get him at night. I thought it was a dumb joke then. Now I keep my copy of "The Shining" safely stored the freezer as well. This book, even before the frightening climax at the end (which makes me cry like a baby every time), is truly creepy. When it isn't scaring you with room 217 or Jack's raves, it has a certain eerie undertone. You'll be afraid to go to sleep with this book lying beside you. Read it. Otherwise, you'll be missing out on one of the most moving, frightening, even poignant novels of modern times.

Summary: The original ghost story
Review: This is Stephen King's best. Even if you're a fan, or just someone that likes to be scared, The Shining is for you. Forget those campfire stories about the ghost with the hook, THIS is a ghost story for the ages. Start with a malevolent hotel, add a collection of guests that won't let any thing stop them from leaving, not even death, and top it off with a crazed father chasing a psychic kid with a croquet mallet, and you've a masterpiece. Just don't read it with the lights out.
