Rating: Summary: Still one of the greatest! Review: This was the first "adult" book I ever bought, back when it first came out. I was terrified, enthralled, and overjoyed to find such a wonderful book. I so clearly remember being almost too afraid to read on, yet I couldn't stop. and the fear I felt everytime I went into the bathroom and saw the shower curtain. I remember the joy of reading this book as one of my strongest memories. I became a Stephen King "fanatic", bought every book in hardback as soon as they came out and wrote term papers on his work in English class.. As I grew older, I thought that maybe it was just my "childish" taste in books that made "The Shining" so wonderful in my memory. So I reread it, and found still more things to enjoy. I just re-read it for at least the 4th time-and at age 33 and thousands of books later, it is still a "10" and my favorite King book. I'm happy that he agrees that this is one of his best, if not THE best.
Rating: Summary: It started out good, What happened? Review: For the first half, this book was a perfect ten. I was glued to the book in suspense but I found that nothing really happened that was scary. I wouldn't say it was bad but I didn't find it to be what it was cracked up to be (Which was a really, really scary book)
Rating: Summary: Bravo, Mr. King Review: I rented the Nicolson movie on Halloween looking for a good scare. I recieved that as well as a strange facination of the plot. I purchased the book a while later and I have to say, it was fantastic. I have not seen the ABC show, but if it is done anything like the book or the classic movie, i will not be at all disapointed. Good job, Mr. King.
Rating: Summary: The Buck stops here for horror Review: there has never been another horror story like it, and I still have nightmares. Jack Nicholson was an Incredible actor in the movie, but read the book for an even greater scare! A perfect 10.
Rating: Summary: An Impressive Work, Better than the Movie Review: I tend to shy away from highly prolific writers with a large popular following. In horror, my own favorite is H.P. Lovecraft. On top of that, I was not all that impressed by the movie of "The Shining. Then, one night recently, when I had to let the dog out at 3 a.m., I caught an uncut version of the movie on cable. That was the end of my sleep that night! Encouraged by that, I bought a copy of the book. King had the power to make both his people and his locales real. Opening the book each night at bedtime transported right to the heart of The Overlook--often frightening and disturbing, but it was hard to put down! I don't know anything about King, but he must have some exposure to autism since he mentions this in respect to Danny, in a book written decades before even our current still fuzzy understanding of the disorder. Danny certainly has much of the autistic _persona_, though this is not the subject of the character or book. As a literary vs. cinema note, a lot of the brilliant imagery in the book seems tailor-made for the screen (as in: written with a movie in mind) but was not used in the movie. Conversely, perhaps the best known, most copied image in the movie was not in the book! Guess which one? A must read for horror fans.
Rating: Summary: REDRUM, REDRUM, REDRUM, COME AND TAKE YOUR MEDICINE... Review: THE SHINING was definitley an amazing book. Although it was written many years ago, I read it a couple months ago and I absolutely fell in love with it. I had actually just started it, and then went on vacation and ended up wasting my vacation reading the book! Yes, it's very addicting, so it goes fast. From the minute King describes the OVERLOOK, you know its evil, you know there's something going on. Room 217, truly scared the crap outta me and that's all I'll say, so I don't spoil anyone's reading who hasn't read it. BUT, I can't leave Danny or Wendy out of this, their characters actually scared me almost as much as Jack's b/c Danny's "shine" really frieked me out, and Wendy's insecurity almost made her suicidle. ANYWAY, this book is great horror.
P.S.--jack nicholson makes a great psycho, check out the movie too--like anyone hasn't seen it :) ?
Rating: Summary: Nearly too intense to bear! This book is amazing Review: The Shining has to be read. It is such an experience. I feel like I've been to the Overlook, and I know Wendy, Danny, and Jack Torrance very well. I have been back to the Overlook many times, and it still scares the bejesus out of me. Who would have thought that I could ever feel terror about concrete rings in a playground? Exhausting, but exhilarating. Stephen King at his best.
Rating: Summary: Beyond the human range, a touch of hell a drop of strange Review: Stephen King delivers one of his best stories ever about Jack Torrance, and his stay at the Overlook. Fighting against alcohol, Jack digs into the past of the hotell, while his own violent past catches up with him. His son Danny sees the evil but there is nobody around to believe him, except the chief cook at the hotell. Danny screams out for help with his special giff called "The Shining". But does help get there in time? Or will Jack be able to "correct" his naughty family?
Rating: Summary: Wow is the only word to describe Review: This book was so good i couldnt put it down. It was scary and suspenseful. What a very good book should be. This was my first King book and since then i havent stopped reading him. If you have ever thought about reading King. Read this one first because it definately illustates what a good writer King is.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST EVER Review: I would like to say that I think "the Shining" is one of King's best!! The story was spellbinding and I couldn't help my self from turning the pages!! I bought the book on a saturday and by mid-sunday I had read nearly 300 pages! I give it two thumbs up (because remember, I only HAVE two)!! The story truly hit me like a roque mallet! --Cat, 12 years old
