Rating: Summary: this book was never boring and made my skin crawl Review: This is the first book that I've read by Stephan King and its the best book I've ever read. It was never boring and kept you on your toes to find out what was popping around the next corner
Rating: Summary: FRIGHTENING !!! Review: Iv seen this movie and read the book, and I have to say the imagination you can use with this book makes it that more terrifying. This book is a frightening exspirence from the begining to the very end. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to be scared to death.
Rating: Summary: YOU MUST READ TO BELIEVE THE HORROR Review: I read The Shining in two days. Once I picked it up, it never left my hands. I was enchanted with Danny's personality, his innocence in spite of the terrible gift bestowed upon him. I broke out into a sweat as Danny dreamed he was being chased through the halls by a mallet-bearing monster. I shivered as Wendy locked Danny and herself in their room. I was amazed at Kings ability to make me feel a part of the story. I couldn't sleep the first night. I made the mistake of seeing the movie before I read the book. I am now frustrated that such a work was transformed into a souless, hollow movie. Kubrick was out of his league when he tried to make The Shining into a movie. The horror and fright weaved into a story, written on pages, is not done justice poorly depicted on the silver screen. REDRUM! (come here and take your medicine)
Rating: Summary: PERFECT Review: This book was so good. I loved reading it. This was the first book I've read in a long time. It's hard for a book to interest me, and is even harder for a book to be better than the movie. This was brilliantly written. It's detailed, but not to detailed. You may want to turn on some lights when you read it, as some say. It is scary as well as thrilling. I would recomend seeing the movie The Shining after reading the book. I would recomend this book to anyone with patience (primarly because it's rather long). But over all it was a great book.
Rating: Summary: SCARY! Review: if that heading seemed corny, i could have said about 100 more things about it!(all being good)it was scary and suspenceful all through it! i was checking behind the shower curtain every night for a month. The ending was amazing! i liked it better than the movie!
Rating: Summary: Don't read this one at night alone... Review: I am a long-time King fan and first read this one shortly after it came out in paperback, in the late 70's. It's one of the best all-time scary ghost stories I've ever read, but it's also one of the saddest. The relationship between Jack and Danny is so poignant... The reader who complained about King ruining the "scariness" of the book by concentrating on the father's alcoholism completely missed the point, in my opinion. Horror doesn't only mean blood, gore, monsters and ghosts. It can also mean the disintegration of a mind and the supernatural forces that hasten this disintegration and use the father's weaknesses to get at the son's psychic powers. What happened to Danny in Room 217 was so horrible it had me jumping at shadows, and I love the character of Dick Halloran. A word about the filmed versions... I don't know what book Stanley Kubrick used to film his version, but it wasn't Stephen King's. That movie royally sucked. It was the worst filmed verson of a Stephen King story I've ever seen. Jack Nicholson over-acted shamelessly and completely missed the subtle undertones of Jack's character, and the ending was horrible. The tv version followed the story much more closely, and I thought Steven Webber played Jack much better than Nicholson. I enjoyed the tv version very much, but the book is still better. Highly recommended if you like to have the pants scared off of you.
Rating: Summary: THE GREATEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ... Review: Ok...I have to say that I have read alot of books. From MichealCrichton, to Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Tom Clancy, and King is by farthe most masterful author I have ever read. Anyways. This book was so intensely chilling, it was scary...no pun intended. King uses his grasp of terror to envelope you with the fright that keeps you sitting there for hours at the edge of your seat. Definitely read this book. If you have any doubts as to King's grasp of terror, just take a look at the new version of the movie. I have no clue who directed/re-wrote the movie version, but the movie held me in the couch like the Overlook Hotel held Jack. The Kubrick version was horrible though. sorry to you kubrick cultee's, but it was jsut bad. Thanks for listening to me ramble...
Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTE TERROR! Review: This was the fourth Sthephen King book I read, and by far the most invigorating. I will never look at the classic movie with Jack Nicholson the same again. The second version of the movie is much closer to the book, however, so I recommend that someone read the book, then watch the new version. Especially around Halloween.
Rating: Summary: I am 13, and this was THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!!!!!! Review: I have read a lot of books, ranging from Stephen King to John Grischam, Dean Koontz, and many others, however SK is my favorite author, and this is my favorite book. The spooky feeling of getting into Danny and Jack's fellings, and the repettitive rythym of which they drew connections to thoughts the had earlier, was an absolutely amazing asset to the book. Other books I have read by SK include Pet Semetary, and Misery. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: no shine Review: This book was so overrated. The Overlook Hotel's past was interesting, but too much detail about unneccesary subjects.
