Rating: Summary: PULL THE SHEETS OVER YOUR HEAD HORROR Review: I was surprised by all the negative reviews I was seeing for this more frighting ghost story. Then when I began reading the reviews I began to realize-from the writing and wording-that these were mostly teenagers.I scares me just a little at how our teenagers have been exposed to so much real life horror that this tale of ghost just didn't scare them like it did me, when I first read it. Ther Shining is a clasic CHILDREN. Read it...and see how it's done.
Rating: Summary: Fascinatingly eerie Review: King creates such an atmosphere of pure evil in this extroardinary book that it will send chills through you. At the same time, he has taken a bunch of people you can't help but care about and thrown them into this unbearably tense situation in a snowed-in, isolated hotel, where they must face the horror alone. It is, too, like CARRIE, an incredibly sad story in places; this one will make you cry as often as it will make you shiver. A masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: Movie Ending is Better Review: I decided to read this book because I saw the movie and liked it a lot. There was so much more that happened in the book that I wish the movie would have shown, especially the whole part with the animal hedges. I thought it was an excellent book, easy to read and filled with detail. However, because I saw the movie first I kept picturing Jack Nicholson the whole time. I was also very disappointed with the ending of the book (I like the movie ending better). So if you have not done neither - read the book or seen the movie - I suggest reading the book first because it is better to be disappointed in the movie than the book!
Rating: Summary: Overrated author... Review: I used to read King to be popular as every9one else was... this, Cujo, and the Stand ruined him. I am quite anti-King because of it. There are quite a few better authors (including my two favorites, Clive Barker and Brian Lumley) and this book can not measure up to any of their work. normally I haeva feeling of satisfaction when i finish a book. I was bored when i finished this one.
Rating: Summary: Not the best of Stephen King Review: Although the concept was good, the content just didn't seem to do it justice. There were times that when I was reading, I just wanted to fall asleep. However, I did always wonder what was going to happen next.
Rating: Summary: It's OK Review: It was good, but somewhat boring(it took about 3 months to finish it. I guess I ruined it by seeing the movie first. I'm glad I finished it though, I think it end better than the movie(Kubrick's I refer to)
Rating: Summary: Much different - and better - than the movie Review: The Shining is King at his best - striving for (and achieving) quality rather than length. The story is taut, well-written, relentlessly building toward a terrifying climax. If your only acquaintance with The Shining is from the movie by Stanley Kubrick, starring Jack Nicholson, you've missed out on something. Nicholson's performance, while memorable (who could ever forget, "Here's Johnny!"), changed the whole story, and not for the better. Nicholson's crazed, wild-eyed looks let you know within five minutes of the opening credits that the main character, Jack Torrance, is dangerously close to a major breakdown. The rest of the movie is anticlimactic. In the book, however, Jack Torrance starts out as a much different character. He's an author, a former heavy drinker who broke his son's arm once in a fit of rage, got himself fired from a teaching position by attacking a student, and has barely held his marriage and life together. But...he _has_ stopped drinking, he's mended his marriage, he's managing the anger, and he's taken a menial job (tending the Overlook Hotel) to support his family. And, because not enough time has passed to restore his good name yet, he's doing it all while enduring distrust from those around him, as well as occasional humiliating charity. The caretaker job does have it's advantages though; long months of complete solitude in which he can step back from all the problems he's had, and can take the time to finish making things right with his family. Not to mention that it's a perfect place for him to finish his latest book, a story he can already see is very good - good enough to be proud of, and good enough to put some real momentum back in his career. In other words...Jack is back, or at least well on his way; and even his first steps in getting it together show a lot of promise of things to come. Unfortunately, the Overlook, and its ghastly inhabitants, have other plans for him, his wife, and especially his son Danny, a five-year old psychic prodigy. The story that ensues is more subtle - and tragic - than anything Kubrick and Nicholson dreamed of.
Rating: Summary: Had to sleep with lights on after reading Review: This book was wonderful and so detailed that I felt as if I were in the story watching all the happenings. I read the book then saw the horrible movie. This book should come with a warning on it saying, "DO NOT READ AFTER DARK! "
Rating: Summary: The Movie Review: I first saw the movie "The Shining" When I was- 8 years old. It was incredible! The movie kept me in suspence the whole time! I have seen it 10 times, and will probally rent it again this weekend. I haven't read the book, but will soon. If you like scary movies and/or S.K. rent this movie!
Rating: Summary: Awesome Review: This book rocked! King knows how to get into his characters head and make an awesome story. I didn't think it was that scary, but that just might be me. I highly recommend this book.
