Rating: Summary: The Shining Review: This being a Stephen King book, i knew that it would be scary. I have seen the movie before, but it wasn't nearly as detailed or graphic. In the book, a family of 3 travel to a hotel that is being abandoned for the winter due to weather. The little boy is named Danny, and he has a gift that is very rare, named the Shining. During the family's stay at the hotel, Danny begins to hear noises, see dead people, and notices things that only he can see, such as "redrum" (which is murder spelled backwards.) Then, his father, Jack, turns for the worst and tries to kill his son. If he is successful or not, I can't say, you will have to read it for yourself! I have read many scary books, but by different authors. Stephen King is a very weird person, to be able to come up with these ideas and thoughts for books of this nature. This doesn't make him a bad writer, but he is different. The book flowed nicely though. My personal reaction to the book was good. I think that the reason I liked this book so much was because I like horror stories and suspense. If you like horror stories, and don't get grossed out easily, this is a good book for you. "...hands closed softly around his throat and he was turned impacably around to stare into that dead and purple face." (217) This quote suits the genre of the book nicely because of the horror and suspense it seems to attract. While this was a good book, it is not for everyone. Adults and teens could really get into this book, while children and some pre-teens would be sacred of it. The book is very graphic and detailed, so I don't think it would be such a great book for children to read. Overall this is a good book, and everyone should be able to read it, if they like horror.
Rating: Summary: The Shining Review: The Shining definitely is one of the most bone-chilling books you will ever read. It is about a family that decides to take care of The Overlook Hotel during the winter. Hoping to solve their family problems, they set aside their lives and abandon themselves into the hotel. Despite the fact of the brutal murders that took place just the previous winter. As time goes on, they soon realize their dreams of some nice family time is out of the picture. Strange things begin happening and Jack, the father, begins to go insane and Danny, the son, begins to see the hotels gruesome history through his mind. This book was very well written and extremely bizzare. If you like strange and weird stories, you are guaranteed to like this.
Rating: Summary: Stephen King's Best Review: The Shining, in my opinion, is Stephen King's best novel. Don't decide to not read the book because you've seen the movie. The book is much better. It's not just better, it's almost a different story. The movie gives the impression that Jack Torrance is psychotic from the beginning; Stephen King's novel is about a loving father - excepting one incident - that turns psychotic throughout the story. If you enjoy stories that make you leave on a light in your room at night, The Shining is a must-read.
Rating: Summary: Where creepy and entertaining meet head on... Review: 'The Shining' is one of the earlier works by Stephen King. His expressive use of imagery and suspense are at their finest in this book and you get sucked into this story from the very first page. Character development is superb...you get attached to all the characters from the start. You experience a wide array of emotions as you watch Jack spiral down into a dark place that you realize he will never get back out of, yet somehow you completely empathize with this character as he struggles with his demons. This novel was one of the first that explored alcoholism and child abuse in this generation and King, as usual is a master of suspense and horror, managing to infuse both with a truly imaginative and intriguing storyline. I highly recommend this book. If you are not familiar with Stephen King, check him out. His writing style is exceptional, both visual and poetic. If you are familiar with King only by reading his more recent works, you are seriously cheating yourself, give his older works a try... believe me you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: The Shining - Stephen King Review: I read about one book per week and this book was by far the best book I have read. I put off reading it for years as I have seen the film and didn't think the book would be any different, but oh how wrong was I. This could be one of the only books that has kept me awake all night listening for things that go bump in the night. Very good, I recommend any Stephen King fan to read this NOW.
Rating: Summary: REDRUM!!!!! Review: Last semester this book was featured in my Gothic literature class. This should give anyone the idea of how much of an impact this book has had over the years. The reader actually begins to care about the Torrances, but ultimately knows that even more bad times are coming. The family is facing a triple threat: alcholism, possible divorce, and mental illness, if that is not enough, put them in an isolated haunted hotel!! I feel that this is one of King's best. It has stood out after 25 years after its first publication as one of the best horror novels of all time. King also pays homage to one of his predessesors, Edgar Alan Poe, frequently throughout the book.
Rating: Summary: Dark and Eerie and still the best! Review: I began reading Stephen Kng when I was about eight years old (started watching the movies at six) and from that time I have been fascinated by the Horror-meister. Sure, there are hordes of people out there ready to criticize... but really... anyone can be a critic. Put simply, this book is a masterpiece! Like the title states, it's dark and eerie in an insidious manner that gets into your blood. My mother told me I acted differently (coldly) for quite a while after reading "The Shining", and after recently rereading it, I now know why! Never, has such a work of fiction impressed me on such a primal level.
Rating: Summary: Hanger's View Of The Shining Review: THE SHINING, by Stephen King, was an excellent book. Through a fictional setting King establishes a startling view into human nature. Secluded on a mountain during a harsh winter, a family has to come to terms with the results of lonliness. Human instinct and the horrible tendencies of human nature are nakedly displayed in this novel, and it creates a chilling effect. A great book for in-depth analysis, or just late night reading.
Rating: Summary: THE SHINING RULES! Review: This is such an amazing book, its not even funny. Besides the fact that's its the scariest book ever written, its scarier than the movie and it's much better than the movie. this book it great. What can I say? Read it.
Rating: Summary: Skip the movie - or at least read the book FIRST. Review: The book is stellar. Much like other King books, the movie is well done, but misses some of the hard core bits and pieces. It will pull you in and keep you reading. C'mon they even made a simpsons episode to recognize the story!
