Rating: Summary: Shine on Review: I just got done reading this book for the 2nd time and it seemed to affect me more this time around than the first time. I believe it is by far better than the movie (although, the movie was great in its own right). I would definitely recommend this one to anyone looking for a good read.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Book Review: This book is absolutly terrific. Stephen King at his finest. It's scary, of course, but not like some cheap horror book. it's actually really good writing. Whether or not you're a horror fan, you'll love this book.
Rating: Summary: Better than the movie. Review: This was the very first Stephen King book I read. Today it remains one of my favorite works from King's earlier stuff. Like his previous novel, Salem's Lot, it begins a little slow. It will kep you reading though, because it is interesting. The only thing that bored me throughout the whole novel was when Jack was reading an old scrapbook of the hotel's history. I finished this book pretty quick. One of my favorite parts is the part where the hedge animals seem to move around. Stephen King wrote that part perfectly. If you have seen the Stanley Kubrick film of the same name, the book is much better.
Rating: Summary: A real page turner that might give you nightmares. Review: I'm not easy to scare, and this book didn't really scare me. It's the scariest book I've ever read and I really liked it. A horror book doesn't have to scare me out of my wits for me to thoroughly enjoy it. If you like Stephen King and/or supernatural horror, get this book.
Rating: Summary: The Shining---One of SK's Best Review: This is the first Stephen King book I ever read. It started me on a long journey as a "constant reader" and stopped me from dangling my feet over the side at night when I slept and from walking into dark closets. I actually bought this copy for my nephew, so that he can be warped in a similar fashion! It is a great book if you like having the crap scared out of you. It is one of his best and one of my favorites.
Rating: Summary: Please don't ask. Review: If you are that numb, to ask if this is worth reading, then you have not been around long enough to know the masters of horror. Who are they? Lovecraft, Poe, King. Be a true reader, and take a lesson from those who know. This is a horror-reader's bliss! If you love good horror novels, and you have not read this, you have a serious void in your experience. Get to it!
Rating: Summary: Not quite the high point of his early career Review: The Stephen King library certainly has its ups and downs--often faulted for inadequate finales (in some cases, i.e. The Stand, without cause) and occasional overlength, but there is little question that this is one of King's better novels by far. In terms of raw story telling, this is actually a peak in King's ability to create true suspense in his readers. That's harder to do that it sounds--a novel can be pursued at the pace which the reader chooses, which means that it takes more than a little talent to broadcast the sort of tension and suspense that King wants to deliver here. He manages a fairly masterful job, however, for which he is to be commended. This is one of the books where everything came together for him--his characterization is still excellent without straying into extraneous areas of his characters' lives, the plot moves at a proper pace, and the story ends as well as any you'll ever read. Since I figure that most folks are reading this book more as a leisure activity than a study in literature, I'll reserve my judgment on the thematic overtones, but suffice it to say that King also offers a fairly superlative literary effort in this novel as well. Strangely enough, this doesn't rank as one of my favorite King books, primarily because of the vague unease that it awakened in reading it (a rare occurence for me), but it is an undeniably good read, and ought to be picked up by anybody with the time and inclination.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: "The Shining" is an example of how Mr. King can get his readers absorbed into a story with his excellent story-telling techniques. This is an "edge of your seat" book with page-turning horror. This was the first book I really got scared from, although unrealistic, which is his style, but for some people, that may make it a non-enjoyable experience. It also had well developed characters who were interesting. King fascinates me with the personalities in each book because they seem real, although his stories are unrealistic his characters are, this is a good example of it (except for Danny's talent). I recommend this to anyone who has seen the movie, because from what I hear the movie was a poor interpretation on the book, and you miss alot of things. "The Shining" is a fast paced action packed book, readers who enjoy "get to the point" books will like this one. Short and sweet, definitely a classic.
Rating: Summary: Truly 3 1/2, absolutely horrifying Review: This was without a doubt, the scariest book I have yet read. The only reason that I would not give it a 4 star rating is that near the end it starts to die off. Through the middle of the book, I could not stop looking around to make sure that nothing was coming after me. It scared me to death, because in the story you did not know for sure what was going on. Near the end, however, it began to get a little out of this world, with the animal bushes coming to life, and it was not as scary, because you knew just what was happening. Still, it was extremely frightening. If you want a good scare, read this one.
Rating: Summary: Something to read in the winter. Review: I had read this book at the worst possible time. In the winter right in the middle of a snow storm that come off Lake Erie. As the Torence family was snow bound. I was held up in a drafty house with the wind blowing. The book gave me the chills. After reading it, I looked around the corners of my old house. It just feels like a good old fashioned ghost story. Where the Overlook Hotel is the meanest Ghost of them all.
