Summary: King's The Shining
Review: Stephen King is a great writter. His books are so involving tht when you read the shining you will enjoy it even though it gets hard to read in some parts. I read this book for a class in school and it was hard to read but Im glad i got the chance to read it. The shining was a relly good book. It wasone of S0tephen Kings better books other than Carrie and Salem's Lot. That is it.

Summary: Fantastically Creepy!
Review: I read the Shining back when I first started reading adults books instead of just young readers books, the book was fantastically creepy and not a book you want to read at night when it's pitch dark out side and everyone else is in bed! I saw the movie with Jack Nicholson, it was good but not nearly as good as the book, in fact the movie can't hold a candle to the book! I very highly recommend this fantastic book, it is one of Stephen King's best horror books!

Summary: Much Better than the movie
Review: Recently, I had the privilege to read a great book, this being The Shining, by Stephen King. This was actually my first book I have ever read of King's, however I had seen some of his books converted to movies. I indeed had seen the original and new versions of The Shining, and I must add that what they say is true, the book is always better than the movie. In some spots, I feel that I had a better picture painted in my head reading the book, then the picture painted in my head from the movie. In case you have not read the book nor seen one of the versions of the book, I now feel it is my duty to give you a brief overview of what this book is about. The Shining, is about how a recovering alcoholic, Jack Torrance, and his family move into a hotel to watch over it, while it is closed for the rough Montana winter. Every winter, a caretaker is selected to keep an eye on the hotel and make sure nothing happens to it, and to watch over it and make sure it does not become dilapidated or run down. The Torrance's later find out about a previous winter caretaker who ended up murdering his family in the hotel. They discover that this hotel is now haunted, when strange things begin to happen. Jack's son, Danny posseses a gift called the "shine", which allows him to sense all of the bad ora in the hotel. The hotel wants to keep Danny there for good, and tries to use Jack to help aid this. I really liked this book, and it often times gave me the chills, it was quite scary in many parts. This will be classified as one of my favorite books. I feel that King did a wonderful job in writing this book, and would not change a thing about it.

Summary: More of a psychological study than horror novel
Review: The fact that Stephen King wrote this book is probably enough to turn some people off, especially if they have seen the movie starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. Please, I beg you, read this book! Unlike many of King's other books, which seem to be drenched in gore, this book is more of a psychological drama about a father and son than your standard horror novel. The love between Danny Torrance and his father, Jack, is the background of this book which takes place in the infamous Overlook Hotel. Jack's father, who has been dead for some years before the novel takes place, is another vital character. Even if you don't normally like Stephen King's books, try this one on for size. I think you'll like it.

Summary: Genuinely Scary
Review: Having never seen the film version of "The Shining", I was perhaps lucky in that I came to the book with no preconceptions or expectations. The only thing worse than seeing a bad film version of a book you read and loved is having seen the movie before you've even read the book. However, as I've said, this was not the case here, so on with the review.

I doubt there are very many people around who don't know the basic plot of "The Shining" (it being so famous that it even found itself the basis for a Halloween skit on "The Simpsons") but just in case, I'll give it a brief run-through here.

The Overlook hotel is a luxury resort in Montana with a rather colourful history. Due to the harsh Montana weather it closes every winter, but requires a live-in caretaker to ensure that it doesn't become run down. Enter Jack Torrance and his family, who, desperate to overcome the shadow of Jack's past (and sometimes violent) alcoholism, think that a winter alone together in a rambling old hotel with no every day distractions may be just what they need to get back on track.

However, it soon becomes clear that all is not right with the hotel, and when we find out that a previous winter caretaker murdered his family during the long, snowy season, we begin to fear for Danny, the Torrance's young son, who possesses the "shine" a strong sixth sense that allows him to pick up the evil vibes of the Overlook and that also seems to channel the hotel's malevolent power. The Overlook wants Danny for good, and it will use the highly suggestible recovering alcoholic that is Jack to get to him.

Stephen King is a superb descriptive writer, and it is in his atmospheric prose that this book really shines (if you'll excuse the pun). Nobody can evoke genuine fear from a reader like King, and if you don't get the shivers several times while reading this, I suspect that your nervous system must be damaged.

Summary: Books Are Better
Review: If you read the book before you see the movie, the movie will be destroyed. The book is SO much better.

Summary: King Scores Big
Review: Wow! This is one of the best Stephen King books I have read out of the ones I have read by him. It's scary when Danny is being stalked by something and when he discovers the horrible truth about room 217. It was chilling and fast-paced. Anyone who says The Shining isn't good is out of their minds. When Jack Torrance goes crazy and is assigned by Grady to kill his family, it ends up with Danny being chased on the third floor. A landmark in American Literature, to quote a review of IT.

Summary: Shine On
Review: A few years ago while staying in a hotel I was flipping through the channels and noticed that The Shining was beginning. I watched it and I thought it was an ok movie but it was nothing worth much praise. After recently buying and reading the book I noticed that I liked it much better than the movie (which is usually the case) but this is MUCH better than the movie. The movie doesn't express Danny's true powers nor does it express the evilness of the Outlook. I liked the evil hedge animals much better than the hedge maze too!

Summary: Excellent classic with new introduction.
Review: Most people have either read this book or seen the famous movie, but i found this version of the book enjoyable to read with the slightly larger print which was compensated by extra pages. Plus, the author's introduction was interesting and gave me a new take on the story. Definetely worth the money if you've never read it before.

Summary: Simply amazing
Review: Wow. I love the movie and all, but this is way scarier. the movie is great but it just leaves out so many scary parts that only the book tells about. (I haven't seen the tv version of it... ... ... I'm not sure if its available on video or what.) Well, I am a huge fan of The Shining now and I am urging all my friends to go out and see it/read it RIGHT NOW!!! I saw the movie first and I think it helped me when reading the book because it was more understandable; I was at least somewhat familiar with what was happening. Now, some people say that the book is so much better in comparison to the movie that the movie ... But I could never say that, I would feel like I betrayed it or something (I have a strong loyalty to the movie, its the first thing I ever experienced involving The Shining and it is of total sentimental value). I'm just glad to have both because its like two different endings to enjoy! I just finished reading the book 10 minutes ago and right now i am feeling a mixture of emotions; the book is so sad and terrifying all at once. The book is plain amazing. I am still in a state of shock/awe at it. It is written beautifully and I wouldn't change a thing. this book is a must-read for EVERYONE, believe me, you won't regret it.
