Rating: Summary: Not as good as Desperation Review: This is the 5th book that I have read by Stephen King and it is probably the worst. The plot never really developed and it wasn't scary at all. If you've read Desperation then skip this one and read something else.
Rating: Summary: OH NO! Desperation is not his worse book! Review: I have read most of King's books. It is hard to believe the same person who wrote The Stand and The Shining wrote these two books. What is it with him hurting kids in several of his latest books? It's getting real old! If you loved this book, it is obviously the only book you have ever read of Kings. I can understand why you can get the hard-back copys of these books so cheap now. They are terrible!
Rating: Summary: This was incredible! Review: I came in to reading The Regulators having no idea what to expect. I come away amazed, thrilled, and glad to have made a good purchase. The plot twists, great character developments, surprises, and the odd format kept me reading, and hanging on every word. The details come pouring in, and the story unfolds. It takes place in Wentworth, Ohio, as a massacre occurs in the middle of a beautiful summer day. Poplar Street begins to look like Main Street, Desperation, Nevada, circa 100 years ago...but one house, that of one Audrey Wyler, remains untouched, her autistic nephew within. The story is interspliced with news clippings, journal entries, and teleplays that give a hint of what comes in the next chapters...none of it expected. How "Bachman" manages to keep the dozen or so essential characters fully developed is really amazing, and the story is a great one. This was the first Steven King book I've read, although I didn't realize it until I had finished. A couple days later, I found King's (really him this time) book "Desperation", with similar characters in a familiar setting. I bought it then and there. Needless to say, I must insist you purchase Richard Bachman's "THE REGULATORS"--You won't be disappointed, I guarantee it!
Rating: Summary: Somewhat Surprised Review: While The Regulators was a good read, as many of King's books are (excluding most of recent work), it bothers me that he would simply take Desperation and twist it around, releasing a completely different novel off of it under his pen name. This seems to me most explained as a marketing ploy. Perhaps he did it so he could use two sets of characters in two different stories, but if that were the case then I would have expected the same harsh, rapid development we got from Desperation. I'm afraid King keeps slipping down my top five list, his creative seems to still surge, but if this is an example of what we can expect in upcoming years, I doubt he'll even stay on my top ten.
Rating: Summary: Was ok but lacked A LOT! Review: I read it and enjoyed it but it really lacked some horror and action the way that king can serve up!
Rating: Summary: The Regulators Review: Uh, what the heck was that? Just a way to get money without much effort is what I see. Same character names as the descent novel "Desparation" and a pitiful story to go along. I think this book is Stephen King's worst novel (I have read almost every single one of his books). There was no substance. It would have been a descent gag book if they were actually the same characters in both books instead of just the names, but all they are are the names. They are all completely different (with the exception of Entragian, who is only slightly different) than their counter parts in "Desparation". So this book really has no redeeming qualities. I know why Stephen King wrote this as Richard Bachman, if I had written this I sure wouldn't put my name on it.
Rating: Summary: Who Regulates This? Don't Read This! Don't! Don't! Don't! Review: The narrator of this story detailed the destruction of a neighborhood and its occupants quite graphically, entertainingly even. Yet, in nailing the plot down in... just... the... right... way, the psychology of the characters is given only surface attention. Yes, a demon wants to corrupt and kill. But why? Yes, several neighbors get corralled toward an absurd doom. But are the individaul responses of the protagonists against this threat quantifiable in the text or simply the conclusion of an arbitrary train of thought on the storyteller's part? This lack of humanism was off-putting, but in combination with the narrator's juvenile vocabulary and syntax, worked to entertain with minimal exertion.
Rating: Summary: One star is too much Review: Let me begin by saying I love Stephen King. I have read just about everything he has written and immensely enjoy his creative plot twists and interesting characters. However, after doggedly struggling through the first third of the Regulators, I was bored. Keeping track of the flat and uninteresting characters made this book nearly impossible to read. I was able to accurately predict the ending. Even the first fifty pages of the Talisman weren't this bad. This book is a step backward for King.
Rating: Summary: Oh Man! Review: This book blew me away! I've read some King books in the past but this one was a non-stop reader. I couldn't put it down and had to finish as quick as possible. Bachman (King) draws you deeper and deeper into his world the more pages you turn! When you turn the first page you had better fasten you seatbelt or you've missed the ride! Buy the Book and Read it, just not late at night!
Rating: Summary: Not as good in any way as Desperation. Review: Regulators, which is supposedly the 'mirror-image' of Desperation, comes nowhere close the power and the feeling of the latter and lacks completely the magic of it also. One should read this only for perspective after having read the much better half of the duo. Though interesting enough and containing that special King something, it just isn't that high in the pantheon and doesn't frighten that much, either. Who is afraid of a bunch of cartoonish cowboys with machine guns? I suppose most people would be if this were real life, but in a horror book that just doesn't measure up.
