Rating: Summary: The King novel with the greatest power of longevity Review: I only wonder why King has not produced a text of the same caliber as 'Salem's Lot. It is indeed his most important work, and out of his entire canon, this novel, along with the possibility of The Stand, has the greatest chance of being remembered as a seminal 20th century gothic novel in the years to come.
Rating: Summary: Modern-Day Classic Review: I've been a longtime fan of King, and 'Salem's Lot is near the top my list of favorites. King is as lyrically descriptive in places as Anne Rice -- especially the park scene with Ben and Susan. This book illustrates King's masterful talent for taking the everyday and the possible and turning it upside down to show you the horror in everyday life. King will go down as one of the greatest writers of all time, and probably the single greatest writer of our era, because he describes society as it really is - and as it may have the potential to be. If you like Poe and Hawthorne but think King is pop/pulp fiction, read this book with new eyes.
Rating: Summary: A Bloody Good Time In Jolly Old Maine; Review: I must say, this book it something else. I suddenly became a bit interested in reading 'Salems Lot' when I read the short story in 'Night Shift'. And when I reached the last story 'One for the Road' -which also dealt with Jerusalems Lot and vampires-I went out and bought it. I will admit that the first chapters are slow but once I got to the funeral scene, I started to get a little bit more anxious to finish reading it. And once I reached the full fledged "Floating vampire outside your window begging ou to let him in" part of the book, thats when the nightmare hit me. I have a bed right next to a window so sleep didnt come easily that week. And the Susan Nortan scene was just a shame. All in all it was an incredible book. Only one thing left me disturbed, exactly what happend to Dud Rogers?
Rating: Summary: A very good book!! Review: The best vampire story I've ever read. King really knows how to tell a story. It makes you want to know if there really are small towns with big secrets to hide.
Rating: Summary: A Gripping Page Turner That'll Give You Nightmares... Review: This is my third Stephen King book that I have read. And he deserves a standing ovation. As an aspiring write, I look at Stephen King's carefully woven details and admire his wicked imagination. This book got me hooked and I finished within two days of checking it out from the library. I've always been too frightened to see the movie rendition of some of his novels because just by reading the book I know I'll be scared to see a make up artists creation of some of the grisly scenes described in his novels. In the long run, the book kis always better.
Rating: Summary: I'm Hooked Review: For the longest time I've tried to avoid Stephen King books because I thought that I wouldn't like the freaky stories. However, this was my second King book (the other being The Stand) and I have become a believer! Everything about this book played out very well: the setup, middle, and conclusion. The characters were very well developed and act very realistically. King stays true to the old vampire lore, but that wasn't the best part of this book. I found it extremely satisfying how the characters reacted to the vampires in the way you or I actually would react in this modern-day, science enlightened, "there's no such thing as ghosts" society. Everything happens very logically. It makes you think that there actually could be some small town out there were this kind of situation could take place. Salem's Lot was very frightening, and very good.
Rating: Summary: And Excellent Book that stays true to the folklore Review: There comes a time in everyone's life when they feel the need to look into the darker, more cynical part of their conciousness and pull out the demon that lurks within. Stephen King has written an excellent novel about vampires which stay true to everything we've ever heard. Being an avid Buffy fan, I wasn't so sure how this would do, but after reading into it, I wished they would do an episode on this. Sure, it starts off slowly, but like most Stephen King books, it picks up and brings you to a suspense-filled peak in which you CAN'T stop reading. Now, most people say that about most books, but I'm not going to lie, I'll never meet any of you anyway, so if you don't like it, the maybe you should turn the book rightside-up and read from left to right, because I don't know what you were doing wrong before.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Review: "Salem`s Lot" was the first Stephen King book that I bought, and it`s still one of the best.King takes an over-used part of horror fiction, vampires, and creates a thoroughly modern twist on the tale. The layout of the book is superb, and the way in which King intertwines the lives of the characters is truly masterful. For anyone who has not read a King novel and wants to find out if he truly is the "master of modern horror",start here and you`ll find out!
Rating: Summary: Starts off slow, gets better towards the end Review: Being a big King fan myslef, and hearing other King fans descibe this as his greatest work, I decided to read Salem's Lot. Stephen King+Vampires=Good Book, right? Well, not exactly. The main flaw this novel has is it takes too long for any vampires to show up! It takes half the book before any vampires surface. Before that we have a lame love story and so many characters to try and keep track of that it gets confusing at times. But keep reading! Once you get past the first half of the book, the fun begins as King uses the Vampires. This novel would have been sooooo much better if King would have started things from page one instead of page 230. Salem's Lot is pure King mayham, it just takes a while to get started.
Rating: Summary: WAS THAT A VAMPIRE AT MY WINDOW????? Review: I am 17, and would much more prefer to read more recently made novels, my grandma gave me Salem's Lot to read and told me to read it at nights! This is truly (outside of "it") the most frighetning book ever made at times. I don't get to scared most of the time by books, but I will sware that one night after the baby was stolen in the book, I looked out my 2nd story window and seen a vampire...now that, my friends, is a horror book!!! I must admit the book cover is what I liked about it the most though, it definetly set the mood!
