Rating: Summary: An Ok Story, But Over-rated Review: I enjoyed this one well enough. It was extremely dull and hard to get into toward the beginning, but picked up a bit by the end. I definately would not consider it the great work everyone else seems to think it is, though. I appriciate it for what it is, and am glad King did the serialization expieriment (though I read it all in one volume.) As far as prison works go, though, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption was leagues better.
Rating: Summary: The Green Mile Review: I was fortunate enough to have read the book before the movie, not to say Hollywood didn't do a great job. It's a truly spectacular story, and, of course, very well written. The events that take place definitely make the end of this story very worth while. The main characters, Paul, the head executioner on deathrow and Mr. Coffey, a prisoner on The Green Mile, have an extraordinary relationship that leads to a very complex chain of feelings and events for Paul, and the other executioners on The Green Mile. With all of the things Mr. Coffey is capable of, the ending of this story was unexpected, yet almost anticipated. Very good reading!
Rating: Summary: I became a part of this story! Review: This is one of the best books I've ever read! Stephen King describes himself as the literary equivalent of a Big Mac and fries, but I think this book is more in the category of good home cooking. The characters are so real and believable, event the magical giant, John Coffey. As Stephen King said himself in the documentary about the movie, this is a story about the human spirit. Frank Muller is, hands down, the best audio book narrator out there. I've read many, many audio books, and his voice and characterizations always impress me. I could go on and on about what I love about The Green Mile, but really the only thing left to say is - read it, you'll love it!
Rating: Summary: The Master at Work Review: I'm a fan of Stephen King but not because I like horror stories. I don't like horror stories but I read Stephen King anyway, because I believe that he is one of the best prose-writers of modern fiction, definitely the best in USA. There are many novelists who have the status of bestseller writers like Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum etc. These guys totally rely on their storyline instead of how they are describing the story. But since Stephen King writes about things and events not (usually?) experienced in the daily life, he has to be a good writer to describe those things and events. That's why I read Stephen King. Not for his stories but for the way he tells them. The book in question is an exception. "The Green Mile" is one of the best fiction works I have ever read. It's not really horror. It does deal with something which is usually described as "the other side" but in a manner that you really don't feel that you are reading a fantasy. When I finished this novel, I felt bad, because I wanted it to go on and on and on. Thank you Mr. King for giving us such a masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: One terrific movie, one awesome book Review: I have to admit that I watched the movie before I read the book. I was very pleased after finishing the book to realize that the movie did not deviate too far from the book at all. This is the first Stephen King novel I've ever read. I don't care for horror and supernatural stories, but this particular story I felt needed to be read, not for the supernatural tale, but for the human experience. In the 6 sections of the serial novel that comprises the paperback, King develops the story of John Coffey, who is sent to death row, which is also called "The Green Mile", for the rape and murders of twin girls. However, Paul Edgecombe, security guard, doesn't believe that this man, who's afraid of the dark, could have committed such a terrible crime. Intertwined within this story are subplots that include, Percy Wetmore, Eduard Delacroix, and William 'Billy The Kid' Wharton, and of course Mr. Jingles. The movie is approximately 3 hours long, and it was worth every minute. I read the book in 2 days, and that's a record for me, and it was also worth every minute.
Rating: Summary: Too long just like the movie Review: I believe I'm a Stephen King fan, it seems I read one book or so per year,so I understand his style. That is what draws me back to him. But the Green Mile just isn't his best writing. This story could have been told in 300 pages, not 536.This is one of my major criticisms of King, he's done it before, he'll do it again. The characters seemed cookie-cutter. And why does he set this story in Alabama, we love Maine! Finally, why have so many ridiculous deaths within the final 10 pages? It was like a bad TV show that needed to end. Overall, do a re-write Mr. King!
Rating: Summary: I liked it alot Review: Having work as an Officer for 15 1/2 years, I could relate alot to this book. Although I think anyone would find this book entertaining. Good characters by King make it that much better. Edgecombe,Coffey, Wharton, The warden, the keepers on the mile and the little fellow. I look forward to the movie.
Rating: Summary: This is a must-read book. Review: As this as my first novel I read, this was just the most touching book ever. Steven King delivers everything he has got to this book. I am only in 9th grade! It may not be on my level but reading it sorta made me on that level. YOU MUST READ THIS. It is the best Steven King book I read. I am looking forward to reading more. Rating: Summary: Beyond Excellent Review: Stephen King has OUTDONE himself again. Just when you think Mr. King has written his best novel ever he raises the bar once again. The characters are so alive and the story so engrossing that it was impossible to put the book down. This book is has everything Stephen King always seems to delivers: suspense, horror, drama, comedy, and, of course, science fiction. Paul Edgecombe, the boss on the "Green Mile" (also known as death row) in the 1930 learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished. This is such a simplified one-liner for a very complex and thoroughly intriguing novel. If you are a Stephen King fan you should add this to your library. If you just enjoy reading an engrossing book that will no doubt leave you with your jaw hanging open throughout THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. HAPPY READING!
Rating: Summary: Amazing listening experience! Review: Can't say enough about how much I enjoyed listening to the unabridged audiocassette version of this entire book. It was riveting and fascinating. Couldn't wait to get to my car everyday to listen on my way home. I hated when it was over. I was completely drawn in by King's narrative and characters. He hit this one dead center!
