Rating: Summary: Read this book more than once! Review: Tag: Read this book more than once!I was frankly skeptical about listening to the wonderful Frank Muller audiotape of this book as I've never been particularly a Stephen King fan and find much of his work morbid and self-indulgent. But after listening to the tape I read the book 4 times! If you believe most of the great classic novels have already been written, please withhold judgment until you've read it. The plot, an account of the summer and fall of 1932 (not 1935 as in the film) at the death-row cellblock of a state prison, has led a number of readers and reviewers to compare "The Green Mile" to "The Shawshank Redemption" but the two stories have little in common other than author and setting. "The Green Mile does contain powerful and moving arguments against capital punishment as well as comments about racism but these are not central; character development, storytelling and questions about good and evil which have no easy answers are. Here, in contrast to other Stephen King books, the otherworldly dimension involves not demons, psychological pits and dungeons or apocalyptic events but the will of God, the forces of evil - or, as King's narrator calls it, the "spirit of discord" - and the extent to which genuinely good people collaborate with evil and fail to recognize it. There are all-good and all-evil characters in this book: three to be exact, with varying degrees of moral ambiguity in all the others particularly in the likable narrator. Re-read several times and you'll uncover layer after layer you hadn't noticed before. I have to disagree with other reviewers on the early part of the book. To some readers it dragged but to me this was one of the very best parts. Odd and disturbing as this workplace setting may be, the interactions among the four guards will be both familiar and funny to anyone who has ever worked for a paycheck. What workplace on the planet doesn't feature an obnoxious co-worker whose days off everyone enjoys, or a likeable co-worker with small habits that drive everyone nuts? I can't think of any book I've read in the last 20 years that has had such an impact on me or haunted me as much as this one did, and can't think of any popular novel I've ever read that made me actually examine my own conscience and want to be a better person. Read this book - and re-read it - and see if it happens to you.
Rating: Summary: Best ever Review: This was one of his finest book. I have always had a problem putting down Kings books. But this one keep me up all night. I don't know how Kings is able to put a story on paper like this one. It seems to flow from the book right into your mind.

Rating: Summary: From a Stephen King Fan Review: When you are a King fan you begin to look for his astounding creativity. I read this book several years ago and it left me with a feeling that stuck with me and marked the experience. Only now of course do I remember the book once again after watching the movie. I vote that you read the book prior to watching the movie due to the fact that a good book lets your imagination go wild. The story will cause you to cry and feel what the characters feel. The story is entertaining and will make you sit up until 3 am with no inclination to stop till you can reason yourself to put it down.
Rating: Summary: An old friend. Review: When I finished the series of these books,it was though I was saying goodbye to an old friend. If you read it you will see what i mean.I can't think of a better way to say outstanding!
Rating: Summary: King has outdone himself Review: I started reading this book on a trip to a relative's house. It was an 22 hour trip and I had absoulutly nothing to do. I started reading and I was amazed at how absorbed I became and how quickly the time passed. The interesting thing is that the Green Mile isn't very scary, nor is it's plot as complex as some of King's other works. However, I still found myself flipping through the pages at an incredible rate and very touched by the time I finished it. Why? The characters. All the characters are very meorable and dominate the book. It's an excellent novel and one that no one should miss.
Rating: Summary: Ultimately the best Stephen King book ever Review: This book will captivate you from the first chapter to the very end. John Coffey is a lovable character and the narrator of the story makes you understand every aspect of the plot. The story has suspense and compasion for everyday miracles. The story will make you cry if you're human. The movie adaption is one of the best that I've ever seen. No one should miss out on this story, which I like is fast becoming a classic in many age groups.
Rating: Summary: Stephen King shows once again that he is an excellent author Review: I was extremely amazed when I found out that Stephen King does not only limit himself to writing horror novels! The Green Mile is an excellent book that gives an explicit detail on what happened on "the Mile". Delacroix's death is a great example. I almost felt as if I were in the group of spectators that were watching him fry. King did a magnificent job on creating John Coffey. This big man with a heart of gold. One of God's greatest creations. While watching the movie, I felt like I knew which character was which, based on the descriptions of them in the novel. The Green Mile is definitely one of my favorite books!
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Story, the Perfect Miracle Review: I am left breathless and amazed by Stephen King's wonderful tale of Paul Edgecombe's roughest times at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. As a 13-year-old, this novel was a landmark for me; never had I read a book so compelling on its topic, and I'm sure I never will. The richly developed, varying charcters pulled me into this swirling story of crime, adventure and miracles. The story of how Edgecombe's secure life is spun upside down by his meeting of John Coffey ("Coffey like the drink, but not spelled the same," he says), an insecure giant with the mind of a child, is both a thriller and a tear-jerker. As Edgecombe searches for the truth about John Coffey, both in Coffey's strange but wonderful power and in the horribly grotesque crime he is condemned for, you will find yourself looking behind a person's eyes more and more. This book will challenge your beliefs on life as a whole and will meet the highest expectations if you are looking for a great book. I no longer think of Stephen King as just a horror novelist, but as the author of a wonderfully woven tale to be cherished forever.
