Rating: Summary: The Green Mile--A Must Read Turned Good Review: I hate the kind of books you have to read for school. And as a 9th grader, I'm very certain I've read more than my fair share of them. I always look forward to the assignments when we get to choose what books we read. For a follow-up to "To Kill A Mockingbird", our teacher gave us an independant project, which, in my opinion, is a way for her to get out of the planning of another project, but hey, who asked my opinion. My mom suggested "The Green Mile", which I had planely stood against seeing in the theatre months ago. She knew I didn't want to see it or read it for that matter, but she tried one last time to get me to hear the story that had so touched her heart. So I did. And as always, my mom was right. "The Green Mile" was one of the most amazing books I've ever read, something that really hits a nerve. Mr. King wrote it intending it to be that in-your face, sassy kind of story that you would remember forever. Well, Mr. King, you've done your job once more. To those who don't believe in the power of a story, take my advice for once, a ninth grader, and take a little time out of your hectic schedule to read "The Green Mile". See if it doesn't change your opinion of the significane of a human life. And thanks to my teacher and my mom, who gave me the encouragement, whether they meant to or not, to read a book that has changed the way I think about capital punishment.
Rating: Summary: Walking the Green Mile (T.C. 3) Review: Books can enlighten our lives. They shape and mold the human mind while delivering intalect and intelligence. Sometimes they can even change the most valuable beliefs of a single person. After my experience of reading The Green Mile, these theories had occured... Stephen King's legendary tale of John Coffey spending his last days on Cold Mountain Penitentiary's E Block was a fascinating read. It challenged my thoughts and also gave me an outlook on life , and its beauty. In my mind, a specific mental picture was formed through the clarifying details King had listed. Even though the story was based on the ugly appearence of life in prison, it reflected some of the most cherished beliefs in human life. Truthfully, this is the best book I have ever read... I enjoyed walking the Green Mile!
Rating: Summary: Superb! Review: I'm a new found King fan. I actually watched the movie first- (I barely ever do that, but in this case, I'm glad I did. Introduced me to King's writing!)-- which was beautiful as well, than picked up the paperback for five dollars at Walmart. I read half of it the first night, the other half the second night. This book is beautiful, even with it's lack of impressive vocabulary words. King's plot is crafted wonderfully, his characters are belivable and haunting, and the message is deeper than anything I expected Stephen King to spawn. This book is great, for everyone. (who can stand a lot of swearing).
Rating: Summary: Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary... Review: "Paul Edgecombe didn't believe in miracles...until the day he met one..." In a world where anything can happen, everything does. This is E Block (the death row unit), a part of Cold Mountain State Penitentiary in Alabama. The year is 1932: People are jobless, the Depression is huge. This dramatic story, in the words of elderly Paul Edgecombe, who is telling about his past, will leave you breathless. When a huge black man named John Coffey (like the drink, only not spelled the same), arrives on E Block for killing two little girls, Paul doesn't know that he has just met one of God's miracle workers, a man who is able to heal people. This intimidating looking giant has the mind of a child, and after he heals Paul, Paul begins to doubt that his new inmate, condemned to die in the electric chair, is guilty. With plenty of other characters, a crazy inmate, and a mouse named Mr. Jingles added to the mix, this story is well-done, beautifully written, and will leave you wondering what will happen next...all the way to the dramatic finish. This is a beautiful book, written by the King of suspense himself, and it is a must-read among pageturners.
Rating: Summary: The Green Mile Review: Are you into the suspense thirllers? You like to have chills run up your spine? Read this book by Stephan King. He does an excellent job of holding your thoughts, waiting for something else to happen. I read the trilogy of five books, so the suspense was held for a few days until the next book came out. But the suspense was worth the wait. The Green Mile, was based, back in 1932, when persecution with African Americans was still going on. African Americans were still slaves and at the bottum of the food chain. The first book starts out on a deceitful night with two little girls missing, and found in the arms of a black man. The African American, knowing little english, is badly beatin not being able to defend himself because of his race. He was automatically guilty of murder, but was he wrongfully accused? This question is deliberatly tossed up in the air all throughout the book, especially with one prison gaurd who questions from the beginning whether John Coffey is innocent. Even though he wasn't proven guilty he is sent to death row to walk the Green Mile. Stephan King does an excellent job portraying and describing the ways of prison back in the 1930's. His details make your stomach turn. Throughout the book you realize how precious life can be. John Coffey demonstrates this to the prison gaurd, which makes the prison gaurd think he is innocent. Staphan King, again, pulled off a great suspense thriller that keeps you on your toes and is worth all the time you have.
Rating: Summary: The Stephen King book for those who aren't die hard Kingfans Review: If you aren't a big King fan and haven't read much of his work, know that this might be his best story. It's very well written and it made possibly the best movie from his work. This is a fantastic story and unlike some of King's work even though this is over 500 pages, it is not even slightly drawn out. It is pretty much a perfect length to tell the story. Anybody would find this a good story if they like to read. As for the movie version it stays almost exactly to the book and that's worth buying too. You can't go wrong with this one except maybe if you are faint of heart, and then maybe you should stay away- it and the movie get fairly graphic and there is an element of vulgarity to it, and that you may not like.
Rating: Summary: The Green Mile Review: I have been a Stephen King's fans for 20 years and in my opinion, aside from The Stand, this is the second best book he's written. He makes draws you right in this book. Its like you are really there. I strongly recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: The Green Mile Scores Five Stars Review: I rated the book the green mile five stars. It is a great book. I would recommend it to seventh or eighth graders.I recommended this book to seventh or eighth graders because it has some swear words and it really get in to the deaths. If you like stories that are somewhat like deathrow and execution you should read this book. i liked it because it was very descriptive. it really gets in the situations and events. I liked the bokk because of the topic too. i like when people have to pay for what they have done. I also liked the book because it always left it off at a really go part and it makes me want to read more.
Rating: Summary: there's not much to say really but.... Review: this is absolutely breath taking, need i say more?
Rating: Summary: A Mystyifying Miracle Review: Being the type of person who prefers to read the book to seeing the screen version of a story, I was satisfied to find The Green Mile, a film that I have yet to see for fear of disappointment, by an author who both intrigues and mystifies me. After the first few pages, I found myself trying to turn the pages faster than my eyes could take the words in to find out what was going to happen next. In this especially moving book, King captures you through his words and delivers you into Cold Mountain Penitentiary where you feel as though you are watching the magic unravel from John Coffey's hands from right inside the mind of his prison guard, Paul Edgecombe. I admit that at first I was a little skeptical about reading this book after hearing what it was about, because it seemed too feigned, but King does a remarkable job of making his characters real and portraying the different perspectives of racism and prejudices that any ordinary person may have. I think he does a good job with going into the heart and mind of Paul Edgecombe and his beliefs and how they evolve after encountering Coffey and his time spent working at the prison. I believe this story and the message that lies behind it were very well relayed and capture you from the very beginning. Though the story is told from nearly forty years ago, the humor and seriousness of the story is in no way archaic or boring.
