Rating: Summary: Has it all! It IS Intense Review: This book, along with Watchers, is my favorite Koontz novel. I read this book in two days--that was a speed record for myself. What can I say? This novel has it all: great plot (and plot twists...prepare yourself), awesome characterization, heart pounding intensity, great wording. This story flows well, and Koontz is a master of setting and mood. I felt myself reach out for Chyna and Ariel. I loathed Edgler--especially at the end. Oh, just you wait for that ending. It was among the most creative and surprising I've ever encountered. I said to myself, "Should've seen that coming!" A few cons...Koontz can get very wordy with metaphors. But hey, it's his style. Also, as believable as the psycho Edlger is, it may be a little much for some people to stomach. Starting his killing at 5? Hmmm...well, you never know. Not one for the kiddies--a good bit of gruesome violence and some sex. If you are a passing Koontz fan, pick up this book--along with Watchers--and be prepared to read a wonderful story. Edgler may be a textbook case serial killer, but Koontz uses this to full effect. Top notch work.
Rating: Summary: Intensity can be Found Review: Intensity may be one of the best books I've ever read by Dean Koontz. The suspense and mystery make up the best plot I have ever read in a novel. This book combines many nightmares and worst scenario cases that many people may never experience in their lives. Chyna has had a rough life in the past with her parents. Her mom was a drug addict and her father was a gangster. Needless to say, she didn't have much of a family life. She left home when she was old enough and survived by starting with almost nothing. She meets up with a friend and stays the weekend at her house. During that stay, death plagues that house and the people in it. Now Chyna finds herself in a world of trouble as she strives to stay alive and help save the day for another in need. This book was a great read because of the plot in this story. It was a well thought out plot and the characters gave more than one angle on the story. All the characters can be predictable on what they do because so much information is given about them. This story seems very real and it comes alive as you read. The vivid description of the house she is in comes to life as you read. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves to read about people in danger or to anyone that enjoys a well thought out murder scene that involves views from different characters. Teenagers should definitely read this book because it shows that even if you don't have a home life, you can succeed and make things work. It also shows a great deal of courage a person can have to pull through and save the day.
Rating: Summary: Wow! It IS Intense! Review: This truly intense psychological thriller takes you on a wicked journey between the minds of one killer and one survivor. Chyna Shepard's best friend invites her to Napa Valley to visit her parents. That night, unable to sleep, Chyna hears sounds and soon discovers that everyone has been murdered, that she alone has survived . . . and the killer is still in the house. Chyna, at 26, is still re-creating herself after a miserable childhood full of fear and mental anguish. This former straitlaced girl who lived life in complete moderation (including the speed in which she drives), finds herself grateful to have been spared, but is now chasing after the killer herself, trying to save a young girl she believes is being held captive by this psycho. Because of her own past, Chyna feels that she is one with this girl and must save her. Edglar Vess, is living, breathing, walking evil. He's been killing most of his life. Started with small insects as a boy, worked his way up to the bigger, better kill. He loves it. It's what he does. It's all an intense game he plays. He's meticulous, cautious, methodical and patient (just like you'll need to be to appreciate this book). "But I'm not a psychopath," he said. "Then what are you?" "Oh . . . call me a homicidal adventurer. Or perhaps the only clear-thinking person you've ever met." " 'Maggot' works better for me." Without the psychological incite and informative flashbacks, this would have been a very short book. Some may feel it drags, while others like myself found it very well-written. It IS intense. The whole idea is to keep the reader in suspense . . . cringing, guessing, surprised to the very end. Dean Koontz accomplishes this concept ten fold. I actually discovered this book here on www.Amazon.com. It received so many great reviews and ratings, I had to read it. So thank you, fellow reviewers and thank you, Dean Koontz.
Rating: Summary: hands down the best book ever written Review: i have most of dean koontz's novels and i LOVE THEM ALL but i especially love INTENSITY. this novel is one of the most flawlessly written novels in recent years, even better than some overly praised dead authors. INTENSITY is scary and relentless. this is the only novel that has made my heart pound in my chest. i highly recommend this novel. Simply the best, and i can honestly say that he writes even better than Stephen King, Peter Straub and all the other authors. Dean Koontz never lets up. this man can write and INTENSITY proves his power. unrelentingly suspenseful!!
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: This book is one of the best I have ever read if you like Dean Koontz at all then get this book it stands head and sholders above almost every book i have read. Do not even think of passing it up.
Rating: Summary: good but freaky Review: I couldn't even finish this book as it totally freaked me. It was well written and really interesting but God it's made me paranoid. I make a point of locking all my windows at night now.
Rating: Summary: A thriller to the end. Review: I won't summarize the story....countless others have already done so. Suffice it to say that this book keeps you engaged. I refused to read it at home at night, due to the adrenaline that got going every time I picked it up. Koontz does a terrific job of description in this book. Describing what is going through the mind of each character, the considerations they are making before their actions, and the details of their actions. You feel every bit of physical pain, every jolt of fright when a character is surprised by something. It's a great ride, all the way to the end, and it almost never lets up.
Rating: Summary: Good, but sick Review: The crimes depicted in this book are so sick and twisted they get inside your head and make you think about nothing but the poor people tortured and murdered. What's more, Koontz explained the killer's thoughts so well, a reader can almost understand and justify the killing, which is scary. I feel Koontz must get a secret thrill by "killing" people vicariously through his character in this book. He enjoys thinking about the grisly acts and gets excited by them. Intensity was certainly intense. And suspenseful and scary. In the beginning it seemed a bit contrived, too much coincidence that the "hero" was not detected, too many times she almost bumped into him or should have been seen. But after that it seemed more believable. I found it hard to put down near the end.
Rating: Summary: the definition of a thriller Review: Intensity is a quick and scary thriller. In the past I've read books that were supposed to be scary but weren't; Intensity, however, freaked me out. Just read it. It's one of the best short novels I've read.
Rating: Summary: Don't skip to the end! Review: This is in itself full of such extremem intense. You end one chapter and can't put it down. The movie made from it did such unjustice as all of the ones made into movies, except for Phantoms. They pulled that off ok. As my favorite author himself said on Larry King, "There is nothing which can be put on film any scarier, than the imagination of the human mind". I concur! There is no way one way visualize except in their own mind the terror of the main female character and her desperation for saving herself and another. The surprise you get towards the end is nothing short of wanting to get inside the book yourself to help escape. Mr. Koontz wrote that this took so much out of him and he had to put it away for awhile. If it caused that much intense in him, just think what you have coming your way when reading it. Just keep the lights and your doors locked. Don't trust anyone!!
