Review: She could have cut the volume in half and still said everything she wanted to, which was apparently very little. After being enthralled with the Vampires, "Witching" was a bitter disappointment. I've read Fluid Mechanics textbooks that were more interesting.

Review: It was good and getting better and then at the end...BAM...WHAM....BOOM! Your in shock! I mean the endding was sooooo depressing I didn't even expect it! Now I am reading "Lasher" hoping that this book will be better...

Summary: A complete literary triumph!
Review: Always having been a huge fan of the VAMPIRE CHRONICLES, I glanced every once in a while at a hardcover copy of THE WITCHING HOUR sitting on my book shelf, letting years pass before I would tackle it. Well, I tackled it, and I found the reward more pleasing than ever I could have imagined. This tale not only eloquently tells the erotic tales of a clan of witches living in modern-day New Orleans, but it describes each and every event in an almost fairytale-like manner, weaving in it superstition and age-old mysteries. Despite its length, THE WITCHING HOUR is not long enough, and its surprising twists and turns leave you in longing for a sequel, which, as of now, has been granted with LASHER. Its surprising climax is both shocking and predictable, yet not leaving suspense in the gutter, and clinging to a deeper realization than life itself has been able to draw up.

Review: I read the Witching Hour, about 3 years ago. During the time I was reading this book, I realized that I had become a part of it. I could never stop thinking about it, and I fell in love with the characters. None were alike. They were all beautiful in their own way. The power of this book has caused me to read the rest of the chronicles and to begin new ones. Because of this book, I have set myself a goal to read all of the novels written by Ann Rice. I pray they are all as good as The Witching Hour.

Summary: Interesting.
Review: I really enjoyed The Vampire Chronicles so only thought it natural that I would get the same enjoyable read with the Witches Chronicles. I enjoyed the book but thought it a bit too long and boring at times. It lost my interest a few times after the Talamasca tale of the Mayfair Witches but I stuck with it till the end. I think it was pretty interesting and will continue reading the rest of the Mayfair Witches' books.

Summary: One of the most amazing works of fiction of all time!
Review: I am not a fan of Anne Rice's Vampire chronicles, so I was skeptical when someone suggested I read The Witching Hour. However, this book and the ones that followed (Lasher and Taltos) changed my life! They were so wonderful, so amazing, so imaginative. What an amazing grasp Ms. Rice had on the entire ancestry of the Mayfair Witches! It just blew me away. I wish more than anything that she would write more about them. I miss them, and I know eventually I will have to read all three books again - although it has already been nearly three years since I began reading them and they are all still as fresh on my mind as if I put the last one down yesterday. I beseech you, Ms. Rice! Let go of the vampires and write more about the witches!!!

Summary: Rice really dropped the ball on this one. . .
Review: My roommate got me into reading "The Witching Hour" and it captured my imagination from the first chapter. The manner of storytelling is masterful, so Rice weasels a star out of me for that. Another star is awarded for character development because despite how much I came to detest many of Rice's creations in the later novels, they were, from the first, mesmerizing. And a third star for the little touches that Rice has been so careful to include, such as the quality of a person's voice and the vividness of the images she creates. Altogether, the novel is an incredible undertaking.

I had some problems with it, though. Rice does not have an adequate grasp of either genetics or ethnicity. The most glaring instances in the book are that "Suzanne" and "Deborah" are not Scottish names and two blonde, light-eyed characters cannot produce a dark-haired, dark-eyed daughter.

This book reminds me of "The Mists of Avalon" because the ending is an incredible disappointment. Rice has said that she writes a novel as it comes to her, with no idea of the outcome. She clearly did not foresee the ending of "The Witching Hour" because it is, at best, a slapdash affair. Excise the final five chapters and write your own before you finish this book, because it only gets worse in "Lasher" and "Taltos."

Review: first timer on anne rice books. its heavy yet unputdownable. Like a snake, it dragged me into the witche's lives langorously and seductively.

but its got lots of unexplained stuff, all shrouded in heavy mystery plus i hated the way anne rice described the surrounding....almost a whole page of it. one or two words suffice for that. Get into the action man!!

Summary: Superb book!!
Review: I read this book about seven years ago when it came out. Since then, it has ranked as my favorite book of all time. I have purchased and read every one of Anne Rice's books, and while I loved (and love) all of the vampire chronicles, and all of her other novels of varied subject matter, The Witching Hour is still the best one in my book. The fact that it is a long book makes it better, not worse, in my opinion. I found the history of the Mayfair family extremely interesting. From the time I turned the first page I was hooked.

Review: After reading all Anne Rice's books, this is the BEST!. It is rich in history, suspense, mystery. It is a shame that the two sequels are not as good.
