Rating: Summary: How did Rice ever become popular? Review: Out of all of Rice's books that I have read, only one was actually worth the time (that one being INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE). Everything else of her's that I have read, including WITCHING HOUR, is just total trash. Like the last few books of hers I tried to read (including the rest of the vampire Chronicles after the third book), I was unable to finish this piece of garbage. The worst part of not finishing this one is that I was reading it for a class, and I am to be tested on it. Too bad the book wasn;t good enough to actually finish.
Rating: Summary: Serious call for editing Review: I thought that the history of the family was interesting, but that it became too cumbersome to keep the story moving. There was far too much repition of information we the reader had already received. Rice tries to keep the reader interested with incest and detailed settings, but overall there just wasn't enough action to hold my own interest. If you are looking for a detailed biography of a family of witches, this book is for you.
Rating: Summary: Pick a Plot Review: I enjoyed the first hundred pages of the book. I especially enjoyed the character development. But then without warning the main character acts in a way that seems to contradict the developement of the first several hunderd pages. To make matters worse the book ends without explaining this enough. I never read the next book, if that was Anne Rice's intent to catch my interest she should have done it with less of a time investment. I have better things to read.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding gothic detail wrapped around New Orleans setting Review: Outstanding book! I loved the Vampire Chronicles and did not think that this would be as strong as that series, boy was I surprised. I am amazed to say that I like it better. Ms. Rice has an attention to detail and an incredible way with words and plot lines. The chronology, which I at first did not want to read because I was so wrapped up in the present day - blew me away with its historic detail and suspense building - it comes together in an incredible tale in modern day. I am already reading the next version of the book and recommend it to anyone that likes the mysterious, supernatural, and the unusual. One of the best books I have read in a long time.
Rating: Summary: Tantalizing, sexy, be-witching....another gem Review: Having read her vampire trilogy, I was excited to embark on another of Rice's journies. Although it took awhile to "become one with the novel," I eventually could not put it down. The ending left me wanting more, and of course', Anne has a continuation novel which I cannot wait to purchase. Her characters are well developed, her descriptive adjectives are excellent. If you have read the vampire chronicals, you will not be sadly disappointed. If you have never embarked upon one of her "rides," I urge you to visit the Amusement park very very soon.
Rating: Summary: a truly extravagant book!! Review: being a witch myself, i found this book truly hipnotizing. though the she does not portray witches as they really are it is a good fantasy book. it has a exotic, sensual story. i did not find it to have much truth in it and it reminds me of a good faery tale.
Rating: Summary: The best of its kind Review: My favorite book of all time. Anne Rice is not so much a horror writer as a writer of supernatural thrillers. If you want to escape into a lush, sensual world with characters so real you can almost feel their body heat as you read, then the witching hour is for you.
Rating: Summary: Anne Rice at her Best!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: THe Witching Hour is Anne RIce at her finest. I read the novel years ago and am currently reading it again. A recent trip to New Orleans has sparked an interest in me to enter her supernatural and extremely seductive world once again. ROwan, Micheal and Aaron grace her pages and pull her mamoth saga to the very end. Rich dialogue and prose, an utterly original family dynasty, and mysterious ghost pulls the reader through the more than one thousand pages. The ending will definately leave you wanting more, and more lies ahead in her sequal, "Lasher".
Rating: Summary: Unique, to say the least. Review: I really enjoyed this novel. It has Anne Rice's signature writing style of rich description and tragic characters, which always make for good novels. I loved the file on the Mayfair Witches, it put a unique twist to the style and was the best part of the novel, I thought. The only reason I do not give it 5 stars, was because of the ending. Because it was such a long book, the reader really needs some closure to justify their long journey. It was as if Ms. Rice had no idea how it was going to end, either. (In my opinion, the sequel to it, Lasher proves this theory exactly.) Still, it is a good novel and my second favorite of Ms. Rice.
Rating: Summary: Too pointlessly long for a book that doesn't really end Review: This was the novel I chose to read as an example of Rice's works. I've been told it was a bad choice (they recommended 'Interview with the Vampire', so start there); nonetheless I don't intend to read any others after putting up with this.Following hundreds of pages of the Mayfair's family tree, I'd hoped for a climactic confrontation with Lasher. Instead I felt deeply betrayed by the female lead. Though she'd been my favourite character until that point, I subsequently found her pathetic, that she could have read the same (endless) history I did and yet so easily ... you know / you'll see. That the plot (which you are given only the occasional glimpse of) was left unfinished I only found further aggravating. If I read it a second time, it would be with the understanding the novel's high points are derived from the historical tales, not the unresolved contemporary plot showcasing them. More commendable are her fantastic descriptions that bring to live the atmosphere of New Orleans, and her obviously careful research into the region's history.
