Rating: Summary: As magnificent now as it ever was Review: I read this book the first time when I was still in high school because my entire family was also reading it and they all loved it. Well, I've just read it again (I'm now 27) and it is still one of my favorite books. Definitely not your standard subject matter and although, back in high school I had a hard time getting into it, once I was, I was unstoppable. I usually dislike science fiction books but I don't even know if this could only be classified in one subject. It's got everything! With exciting twists and turns, unforgettable characters this is truly a book you will never forget. I never have, and never will. To this day I still quote lines from certain characters and even credit this book with getting me through some tough times. As Sister Creep says, one step and then the next gets me where I'm going. Definitely read it, even if it isn't the genre you are normally into, you won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Best book I have ever read! Review: Many people seem to compare this with The Stand, But I have to say, unlike the Stand, Swan Song has to be my favorite book off all time. Stephen king's books are good, but tend to start off slow and drag at many times, where as this book draws you in from the very beginning and doesn't let go. My only complaint is I wish Robert R. McCammon had made a series of books on the characters rather than going from book one when she was a child and then jumping into book two when she is much older. For you studios out there, This would make one [...] of a Movie!!! Swan Song is well worth the time it takes to read this 900+ page book. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Just competent Review: I'm amazed by how enthusiastic all of the other reviewers are about this book. McCammon knows how to write. He's a professional. But this novel is far from great. It was so derivative of The Stand that one has to wonder why McCammon even bothered. There are too many great novels out there to waste time reading a 900-page book that was already written - better - by someone else.
Rating: Summary: I liked this more than The Stand. Review: Robert McGammon always is good. This is magnificant.
Rating: Summary: The Vision... Review: I have read this book three times and I still haven't got my fill. It is a big novel, but one of the easiest ones to read. It hooks you, captivates you, by the end of the first chapter. WARNING: You will not be able to put it down! I haven't read a book that has a richer character developement. You will know these characters; feel their pain, hate them, love them, cry for them. This book burns the memory of the story I your mind, once you've finished. I wish that this story would become a movie. I have such a vivid vision of this book that I picture these characters as some present day actors. Gwyneth Paltrow as adult 'Swan', Michael Clarke Duncan as 'Josh', Michael Douglas as the president of the U.S., to name the most vivid. I will not summerize the story as everyone else has, you'll find what you need to know from the 8 free pages underneath the book above. You will not be disappointed this is one of the best investments that you could make. A story that you will remember for the rest of your days.
Rating: Summary: Don't lend this book to anyone... Review: ...as you will never get it back. I need to buy a fourth copy. As soon as I submit this I am going to put it on my Wish List! It is my all-time favorite novel. From beginning to end, it grabs you and keeps you engrossed in the battle between good and evil. If you are like me, The Stand couldn't grab me from the beginning it was too slow in it's development although I do like King. However, Swan Song starts out with the evil of political worlds colliding giving you a sense of urgency and develops in strange but oh so interesting ways. You get to know the characters in a way that you can get into their heads without it being too heavy. The main evil character though, you are left with a bit of mystery, which is good. I have probably read this book ten times as you find new twists each time. As soon as I can, I am snagging up another copy and plan on reading it again.
Rating: Summary: THIS is the ultimate End-of-days-novel!! Review: For quite a long time I believed that only two authors had written the ultimate Novel about the apocalypse: Richard Matheson with "I am legend" and, of course, Stephen King and his brilliant "The Stand". Well, I guess I was wrong. Since IÂ've read "Swan Song", I definetly know, what a REAL apocalyptic novel is. Instead of a virus talented writer McCammon pulls out the big hammer - a nuclear war. Brutally efficient, he takes no prisoners and shows no harm: "Swan Song" is a pure knockout an even the strongest horror-reader will get nightmares from this one. But inside this holocaust, there is also hope - and a little girl wunderful powers ... Really, this Book is an ultimate masterpiece - and every Horror-maniac with style should own this one (or get it as fast as possible)!!!
Rating: Summary: Very Similar to The Stand Review: I enjoyed this book immensely but found myself comparing it too much to Stephen King's The Stand. The overall story line and even some of the characters fall in very closely with this other book. Not that this is a bad thing. Both this book and The Stand are testaments to good, post-nuclear fall-out type writings. Rober McCammon is a great author and I would recommend his other books over this one. Boy's Life is a much more up-beat and colorful tale which far exceeded my expectations.
Rating: Summary: Horror and hope Review: Exciting, horrifying, hopeful - a story of people whose journeys after a nuclear holocaust eventually bring them together in a good vs. evil confrontation. Supernatural plot which seems so plausible that you'll really believe it could happen. This would make a great movie!
Rating: Summary: Most Deliciously Violent Horror Novel Of Them All! Review: This is what dark horror should be: tense and terrifying. It's the first McCammon book I read and it haunts my memory. "The Stand" has nothing on "Swan Song." McCammon published the majority of his books through the years when Stephen King dominated the best-seller lists, but I never liked King's early books (Christine, Cujo, etc.) and, though I have enjoyed some of his film adaptions (Shawshank/Green Mile/Stand by Me), to this day I still loathe his writing style. McCammon's novels possess a cinematic style perfect for the transformation to film. Come on Hollywood, start adapting! Hint: "Swan Song" first!
