Rating: Summary: This is a good book that is very creative. Review: This book is overflowing with creativity. The use of sub-chapters is phenomanal and the way the book is written is the suspense will make not to put it down. You just keep reading it to find out what happens. All I can say is if you only rean a thick novel once a month, read this one.
Rating: Summary: Grabs you by the throat and won't let go Review: Excellent book in the realm of stories such as "The Stand" and "On the Beach." If you like these world ending type stories this is a must for you to read. It'll make you rethink you life and attitudes.
Rating: Summary: Here we go 'round the Mulberry bush... Review: Dude, I read this book years ago and I still list it as one of my favorite mental-chewing-gum, no social redeeming value, fun read! This stands head and shoulders above The Stand. Be very careful of the graphic parts of the book like when the dude opens up his cuts in the Great Salt Lake. Dude, this is the epic novel for you.
Rating: Summary: Will have an impact on your life!!!! Review: Many can say this book is similiar to S. King's THE STAND, but it is oh so original and different. The story revolves around three different groups of people who try to survive after a terrible nuclear holocaust, including a bag lady from NYC, Sister Creep, who has made a few friends and starts traveling West. In her bag of personal belongings, she has a strange glass ring that she found in the debris of New York -- and it has magical powers. Also, the story revolves around an ex-football player and pro-wrestler Josh, nick-named "Black Frankenstein." He meets up with a young girl named Swan, who has possesed a form of ESP all of her life. She is an exceptional green thump, because she has the "gift of life." Black Frankenstein and Swan, the main heroes in the book, are trapped in a conveniant store basement for many weeks, until finally escaping and beggining their adventure, their bodies covered with horrible burn marks from the blast. And finally, the other survivors we focus on in the book is Air Force Vietnam Veteran, as well as former P.O.W., Colonel Macklin, who has a strange dark side within his soul. He and a young boy named Roland, who is like a mini version of the mentally-sick Colonel (only a little more twisted), escape from a survivalist compound that the Colonel was in charge of -- and set out on a dark adevnture....which eventually finds the evil Colonel Macklin in charge of a large group of hostile survivors.... All this mayhem goes on while a strange man, "the man with the scarlett eye," searches the country for the young Swan, who has the powers to restore life -- just the thing he's trying to stop. This book had me absolutely hooked. The characters are so vivid, the situations explained so well, and you wind up feeling the character's emotions. I can't express in words how much I loved this book. Maybe I can only do it this way -- I thought THE STAND was the best book I ever read....well, when I read SWAN SONG, it made The Stand look like some grade school pop-up book. The only problem with this book is that the ending seems rushed and some things go unresolved. SWAN SONG is, by far, the BEST BOOK I have ever read...hands down. Read it. No reccomendations...just read it. You have to or your life won't be complete.
Rating: Summary: The best book in the world!!! Review: I thought that this book was wonderful. If you want a book that makes you think about life, human nature, and the after affects of war, this is it. It makes you realise that when everything is destroyed, the things you thought were important really aren't anymore.
Rating: Summary: The best book I've ever read - at least 15 times. Review: Robert McCammon has created a masterpiece. From the believeable scenario that plunges the world into World War III, to the final showdown between the forces of good and evil in an underground bunker in Virginia, Swan Song will keep you spellbound, turning the pages until the heartwarming end of this wonderful story. The characters McCammon creates are rich and varied. You can appreciate the bag lady's courage and determination. You can feel Swan's abilities. You fear Colonel Macklin's mobile army. It's the story of three bands of survivors of the nuclear holocaust. The other characters that these survivors meet on their journey are equally vivid and powerful. Read Swan Song. Or read it again and again.
Rating: Summary: Don't read this one in the dark! Review: I'd never heard of Robert R. McCammon when I picked up Swan Song at a discount book store. But, I love Dean Koontz who had something good to say on the cover. I was interested after one page; I stayed up until 3 a.m. after the first chapter. A few things kept this from being a 5 star read: the "never explained" (why the growths on only certain people's faces? why did he point out that the circle of glass protected Swan - but never use it to protect her), the extreme violence against children (I know it happens, but as a mother, it makes a book very unappealing to read), and the way he built and built the story, but the end was definitely anti-climatic. But don't let any of this stop you from reading this book - especially if you loved The Stand (however I've reread The Stand 5 times; I'll probably never reread this one).
Rating: Summary: Similar to "The Stand" but wonderful nonetheless Review: I was skeptical after reading the plot, considering it a knock-off of King's "The Stand." But I was surprised and wowed by McCammon's story. After "Swan Song" I had to pick up everything else he wrote. IMHO, worth your time if you like post apocolyptic thrillers.
Rating: Summary: Lost myself in Swang Song time and time again!! Review: I love any book that let's me lose myself in the images and thoughts provoked by it. The action and "just right" Kingesque dialogue were mesmerizing. I discovered this book years ago and have bought it 3 or 4 times because I keep loaning it out! I have read it many times and will read it many more times to come. It's that good.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding! Review: The story was wonderfully written to keep the reader turning the pages again and again. While the events and setting was very much like the THE STAND, it took on an adventure of its own. You will not leave this book once you've begun reading the first 30 pages.
