Rating: Summary: The best ending ever! Review: This book left me shaking. I could almost feel the narrator's soul being sucked from his body at the end of the book. All those blank pages made me feel cold. I don't understand how some people didn't get it. It's not a puzzle or anything. The book is enjoying to read and very entertaining even during its darker moments.I've bought most of Mellick III's books. This one isn't his best, but definitely the most fun to read.
Rating: Summary: Greatest Story Ever Told! Review: This book was an exceptional read for anyone into not too coy satire about religion, the devil, and all the other absurd oddball characters associated with diety worship. It paints society out to be absurd too but the author, this psycho-beat-realist was on something when he wrote this besides being just a cynical so and so. But it's pretty refusing to read a piece of anti-literature by someone who basically sees the world for sadly how it either really is or going to be.
Rating: Summary: Dont waste your time Review: This book, while getting your attention and is rather good with details of characters and even non characters(hence the one star) is an utter waste of ones time. The ending is rubbish. It is a waste... The ending leaves the reader hanging and saying "What just happened? Is this it? Where is the rest of the book?" I suggest never buying this book and not listening to the ones that gave it better reviews.
Rating: Summary: Holy crap! Review: This is a book you just have to read. Buy it... Just get it. It reads kind of like a Vonnegut book, but it's a lot weirder than Vonnegut and is more underground culture than pop culture. The story involves everything from a dimension of midgets dressed up like united states presidents to Jesus Christ masturbation fantasies to a race of women who eat with their vaginas. There's enough story in this book to write a hundred books. But the basic plot is simple: some punks get jobs at a fast food joint owned by the devil while the world falls into apocalyptic chaos. I can't wait for more Carlton Mellick books to come out. I'm itching for more...
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece to me, but not for everyone Review: This is one of the few books that really clicks with me. It is written in a fun and entertaining way, yet it is smart and extremely inventive. Too inventive for some, because it is so unusual and different than any other book out there that some people will not know what to do with it. If you're expecting a traditional story with a traditional outcome you will be disappointed by Satan Burger. But for me that's what is so great about it. I'm sick of the boring mainstream books that come out every year. You can't tell one from the other. But Satan Burger is something different. The plot takes a completely unexpected route every chapter. You never know what is going to happen next. With blue women whose mouths and privates have switched places, a living dead boy whose body parts become living creatures after being touched by Satan, and hundreds of humorous philosophies like how sound was invented or why God is such a jerk. This alternate dimension centered around the new fastfood restaurant, Satan Burger, is exciting to explore. The small details of this book alone are worth the cover price. The only other author that I can think of that is similar to Carlton Mellick III is Kurt Vonnegut. But Mellick III is a demented punk rock version of Vonnegut. This is probably why some people don't like him. He is like Vonnegut yet not accepted by the masses. I believe this book is for the younger twenty-something undergound culture crowd. Older conservative readers probably won't have as much fun with this book as I did. Carlton Mellick III does something different and genuinely NEW. And, well, you just can't teach an old dog to read new books.
Rating: Summary: A true original Review: This is one of the most original books I've read in a long time. It would be easy to dismiss the book for a variety of reasons: the obscene cover artwork, the fact that it was written by a 20 year old (which I find very impressive, after reading it), the characters are disaffected teens who do a lot of drugs, etc. But I found it to be hilarious, insightful, imaginative, subversive and thoroughly enjoyable. It may not be a traditionally structured story, but it's not full of pointless gimmicks either. Nor is it a self-indulgent stream-of-consciousness mess. The author really just seemed to be following his instincts, and daring to push the boundaries of traditional storytelling. I think this is a young writer to watch out for.
Rating: Summary: Satan Burger is even better than the Sting Burger Review: This is truly an amazing book. Its not often that a piece of writing comes along that can make you shake your head in disbelief, roll around with extreme belly laughter, and question the world's reason for exsistence. Satan Burger does all of this and more. The writing style is descriptive to the point where you see, feel, smell, and get punched in the face by the settings and characters. Carlton Mellick III turns words that have never been used as adjectives and verbs before into mindbending surreal atomospheres that jump of the page and mosh inside your brain. Do yourself a favor and get a copy of this book. OK I need to go bother LaVar Burton about seeing if I can review this book on Reading Rainbow.
Rating: Summary: Something New Review: Though I didn't love this book as much as the other reviewers, I did enjoy it quite a bit. It was definitely something different. I didn't relate with the characters but they were interesting and unique enough to follow until the end. I can recommend it because of three reasons. First, almost every page is packed with creative ideas and images, you'll never get bored. Second, the writing style was poetic enough to be refreshing, but not overdone. Third, you never knew where the story would take you. I had some problems with the characters. Maybe I just don't relate to the rebelious youth anymore. Whether you can relate to him or not, Carlton Mellick is one of a kind. I recommend reading Razor Wire Pubic Hair first though. It is more Dali than Python.
Rating: Summary: great book, original and well written Review: with all the hype, i expected an extreme book that is sacriligious and raw and whatnot, but it isn't. the story is different, well told, and interesting. the book is well written, flows nicely, and has an interesting bunch of characters. at times the words are poetic, and there is one scene that was so well written i could see what was happening. the book is odd, has some odd philosopy, and an interesting take on the invention of the sandwich. i'm glad i bought the book, it is in no way cookie cutter.
