Rating: Summary: Seemingly Derivative Review: Although I am not certain whether this book became blase through age or imitation, the end result is the same: Lovecraft is rather boring. Every story seems familiar--even his description lacks vibrance or grasp. Sorry to vitiate what is obviously such a cult figure, but an injection of reality was needed among this stash of awed reviews. Read absolutely critically, I would think him a novice. Spend your money on Poe.
Rating: Summary: Very Good Collection of H.P. LoveCraft Stories Review: This book, in my opinion, has the greatest HP Lovecraft stories ever prduced by the great author. It contains many stories as well as an in depth analysis of his works and beliefs untill death. I suggest this to anyone who truely wants to be scared and have their sanity tested!
Rating: Summary: It's all true!!! Review: The true horror of Lovecraft's writing is that truth is exactly what it is. These are no mere flights of fancy, but the horrible reality of life, and the things which lie waiting in death, on this eldritch stone hurtling through space we call Earth. For I have seen the unnameable horror of the Shoggoth, I have heard the call of Cthulhu in my dreams, and I await the day our once and future master rises from its watery tomb in R'lyeh to bring on an epoch of mayhem, and killing, and shouting, and chaos!!! Cthulhu fthagen!!!
Rating: Summary: HP Lovecraft - premier master of horror fiction Review: HP Lovecraft was a visionary - he entirely rewrote the American horror genre with the works of his Cthulhu Mythos. All the major stories are contained within this book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent anthology for the neophyte and afficionado alike! Review: I was introduced to H.P. Lovecraft's writing when I was about 10, and have been a fan ever since. Typically, his work, when left for the imagination to illustrate, far outshines any cinematic re-telling. If you're looking for a really good fright and are unafraid of his occasionally sophisticated use of the language, this author is without parallel.
Rating: Summary: Lovecraft is one of the greats Review: When I was fifteen I borrowed this book from a friend of mine. It changed my life. I had never before and never again felt such terror from reading. It was the book that made me want to become a writer. Of course, that dream quickly ended when I realized that I had no talent!
Rating: Summary: H.P. LOVECRAFT A TRUE MASTER Review: I first read H.P. Lovecraft at the age of 8, and his stories profoundly influenced my view of the world, especially since I am from Rhode Island and know the land and people he describes very well. This anthology collects some of Lovecraft's finest work, the best of which takes the reader on a mental journey through incalculable aeons into the past. These stories make you think of just how small you are in the size of the universe. My favorites are definitely "The Dunwich Horror", "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", and the mind-boggling "The Shadow Out Of Time." I warn the uninitiated: these stories will keep you up at night. You won't be able to stop yourself from reading everything.
Rating: Summary: This is the ideal book for someone new to Lovecraft Review: With so many Lovecraft books in print, its hard for a neophyte to know which one to get. Well, this one is it. Has just about all the really great stories one could want. Although ALL of his writing is amazing, I'd say this one book would be the ideal intro for a new reader.
Rating: Summary: Compelling Review: Quite unlike any other author I have read in this genre, Lovecraft manages to create a sense of other-worldliness in every story, the sense of impending doom is almost claustrophobic. A remarkable collection that introduced me to his work.
Rating: Summary: Should be Item#1 in your Library of Supernatural Literature Review: It will seem boringly repetitive to readers of these reviews but I must concur with what I read in the others. Includes some of the greatest short (and not-so-short) stories in the genre: The Colour Out of Space, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, almost every item in the book. If you love Horror/Supernatural/Occult literature, this is a treasure trove you'll return to repeatedly. If anything, these stories grow by repeated readings, like any true classic. Cerebral, beautifully paced. Most highly recommended!
