Rating: Summary: Great Read! Review: I fell into The Descent quite innocently and couldn't get out until I'd finished the book. I've read other works by Jeff Long and have enjoyed them all. But this was just excellent. It hooked me in the first chapter and wouldn't let me go. It scared me to the bone, yet I couldn't put it down. Two nights in a row, until 3:30 a.m., I kept reading. Then, I felt like I wanted to sleep with the lights on, and I don't scare easily. Jeff's research is excellent, his prose is tight, his story line is fascinating.
Rating: Summary: The Descent Review: I just finished reading this book and must say I did enjoy it. It's vaguely reminiscent of "Last of the Mohicans," albeit a sci-fi version. The premise of the book is wild and exciting, but some of the excitement gets lost at times in the wild theories and conclusions of the Beowulf Circle. The possession aspect of the book left something to be desired and was, in my opinion, not a benefit to the book. It's one thing for Satan to be able to jump from body to body, but entirely different for the masses to do so. Besides, it wasn't consistent. If hadals could enter a new being at death, then why weren't any of the exploration team nabbed... especially with all the hadals killed in the book. All in all, I liked the book and would recommend it to others. The beginning really captures your interest and that's enough to fuel you through the rest of the book.
Rating: Summary: Creepy in spots, implausible in others...Still pretty cool. Review: I read The Descent with great interest and greater expectations. It definitely has its share of scares, especially early on, but there were a few situations and twists of fate that seemed highly improbable or mere contrivances. This is not to say that The Descent is not an entertaining read. When he hits his groove, Jeff Long's knack for delivering a palpable sense of evil can make the very air curdle around the reader. Not sure about the inevitable movie version, though; it seems like the kind of story that would rely heavily on descriptive accuracy to translate properly to the big screen, something that many studios might shy away from when it comes to portraying the denizens of the abyss.
Rating: Summary: If you only read ONE horror boo read THIS one!!! Review: WOW!!!I read lots of horror and sci-fi, but I gotta tell you: This is quite possibly the most terrifying novel I've ever read! It not only keeps you turning the pages but it has the effect of creating disturbing feelings well after you put it down! It does drag justr a little in the early chapters, but that only adds to the characterization and feeling later on. If you like to be scared badly get this one without fail!!! EXCELLENT!
Rating: Summary: Too far from the Center Review: Although the premise of the book is far from original, it does have some interesting moments. The book opens far too many avenues of possibilty that can not be fully explored in so short a treatment. It seems that Mr. Long gets a bit lost in his own abyss. We have a psycho-sexual element that begins to explore a dominant/submissive society of protohuman slavers that is hardly touched upon. The religious beliefs of early judeo-christian history that almost seems like a window dressing, and a bailout ending where the author seems to grab a handful of disjointed threads and tie them into a dubious conclusion. All I can say is it was a heroic effort, akin to free climbing El Capitan.
Rating: Summary: "THE DESCENT", CREEPY...................... Review: I have to confess, I picked up this book on a whim and was more than pleasantly surprised at the imagination of Jeff Long. What an Author!! This book is probably one of the most well written books I have read in quiet a while. I would put Jeff Long in the same catagory of James Byron Huggins ("Cain", "The Reckoning"). If you like to be "creeped out" this book will do the job. When one of the main characters in the book crash lands in a fog of poisonous gases and is forced to walk over bones of half eaten humans...well that is just the start of the nightmare.... If you like horror and sci-fi mixed in with all kinds of creepy stuff you will not be dissapointed!
Rating: Summary: a great book Review: starts off better than any I've read, and keeps you going till the end .
Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING!!! 5 STARS Review: This is a great work of horror/scifi. This is the book that Stephen King wishes he could write. I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end. EXCELLENT!!!
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK OF THIS GENRE! EPIC, SUSPENSEFUL, FULFILLING! Review: Jeff Long has taken the time to craft a suspenseful science horror novel that fulfills its promise. A well-honed cosmology forms a fantastic underlayment, which allows the suspense of the story to shine on its own merits. Contrary to what another reviewer has posted, many of the questions ARE answered, albeit subtly, in the course of the narrative. Long poses several hypotheses regarding the nature of the abyss and its inhabitants: 95% of these hypotheses are borne out in the telling. This makes for a terrific read that is both intelligent and fun.
Rating: Summary: Very engaging book Review: I rarely read fiction, so it takes a book that is pretty interesting - one that really makes you think - to keep my attention. Some have criticized that this book does not explain certain things and is far fetched in terms of what is physically possible. While I agree that there are some issues there, keep in mind that this is called science fiction for a reason. The key thing here is the concepts and writing style - orignal and excellent respectively. I hope there is a sequel.
