Rating: Summary: A must read! Review: Gaiman has created a world in London Below that is as fascinating as it is believable. Even the secondary characters are well defined and interesting, which is unusual in fantasy fiction. The main character of Richard is thrust from his ordinary life into the world of London Below by a simple act of human kindness. After a rough start, he handles the challenges a lot better than most people might. Without giving too much away, I can guarantee that you will never look at London in the same way ever again! Knightsbridge and Earls Court especially. <VBG> This book is destined to be a classic, and well worth reading two or more times in order to savor all of the details! I highly recommend this book to anyone searching for a good read with an absorbing plot, interesting characters and superior writing! Gaiman is one of my favorite writers!
Rating: Summary: A Tale of Two Londons Review: When Richard Mayhew stumbles upon a bedraggled young girl and saves her life, his own life changes and certainly not for the better. Soon after the appropriately named girl Door disappears, Richard finds reality as he knows it disintegrating. Neverwhere poses an intriguing question: suppose you're yanked from your life and flung into another--a darker, more malevolent, but ultimately more lively life. Given the opportunity to return to the safety of your former life, would you want to?
Rating: Summary: A Dream... Review: This book is truly an amazing and wonderful thing - and idea - a dream masterfully put into words so captivating that one can't but help looking at reality differently after reading it. Gaiman has acomplished what is almost impossible to do with the english language's almost meaningless words: he has taken a dream and written it so that others may live it too. Definetly not a book to pass up.
Rating: Summary: Something for Everyone Review: This book is the most spell-binding novel that I've read in some months. It combines a little fantasy and a little horror with British wit to create one of the most original books in some time. The villains are creepy, the protagonists likable, and the overall effect of the novel is that of a rather odd dream that you don't want to end... Which is precisely what Neil Gaiman, creator of The Sandman, would want.
Rating: Summary: A classic! Review: This book has it all! A spell-binding plot; fully realized characters; evil villains; comic relief; an ordinary man on a journey of self-discovery; it has the works! London Below is a fascinating world, fully populated by interesting characters and believable situations. You will never look at the London Underground in the same way after reading this book! This story is destined to become a classic, so read it already!
Rating: Summary: Wow...ride on to London Underground Review: The theme of another world in London Underground was so original. Gaiman painted another world which we've long forgotten in the Modern world above. Like in the busy modern city, people under immense stress and hardship have always long for a imaginery sanctuary. Underground London provided this "door" to that sanctuary. A sanctuary of the minds. Interesting characters like the Baron at Earl Court, Hunter , the squire and of course Lady Door made us look around us that the resemblance to some of the people around us....not physically really. It also increase our curiosity of the existance of yet another dimension with others who co-exist with our world. Richard Mayhew would represent a typical urban person who stumbles upon this dimension accidentally. With a different set of rules in that World, it shows us how an able city dweller can be so helpless in a alien land. His feeling, emotions in relation to the strange world reflects what many of us have hidden deep within us. The desire for an adventure but the pullback of the comfort of a stable and sedentary city life. well....the next time I'm in London. I'm going to pay very close attention in the subway. The dark end of the tunnels could have led us into Neverwhere. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: An excellent look at a world we never knew Review: This was an amazing book. I've read it three times and I'll keep reding it. It never gets old or boring. It makes you really think what goes on below and if maybe, there is something going on we don't know about. The descriptions were wonderful of everything down to the littlest detail. It made you think you were there with Richard, Door, the Marquis, and everyone. Like you're part of the large world of odd and sometimes humorous characters. There is not one bad thing that could be said (in my mind) about this book. It was quite a different view having all the different charcters introduced and descibed so well even if they weren't there for too long. Your emotions moved along with the pages turned and the emotions of the characters were well descibed and it was just an all around wonderful book. One of the best ones I've ever read (it's tied with Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett). I suggest this book to anyone who wants to read an exceptionally well written book.
Rating: Summary: I have a new favorite author Review: I was very impressed with this book. It was very original, and was exciting from the word go. Gaiman creates an eerie world that makes you think: maybe there is another culture below us. Richard Mayhew is a believable character, and does things that any normal person from London Above would do. He was shown the ropes of the underground world, and did quite well for himself. The cast of characters: Door, Hunter, de Carabas, Coup and Vandemar, Islington were great. The villains were mean and unforgiving, and the heroes were courageous. I especially loved Coup and Vandemar. They had personalities that made them out sort of like mafia tough guys. I also loved how some of the subway stations had their own little group of people living there. For instance, in Black Friars station their were Black Friars. And at Earl's Court, there was an Earl's Court. Very clever. This is a enchanting dark adventure that keeps you guessing. There are lots of twists and turns that make this book a great read. I look forward to reading Gaiman's new book Stardust.
Rating: Summary: One of My Favorite Books of All Time! Review: This is one of those books that I couldn't put down, but at the same time, I didn't want it to end. The story is great, but the characters are what really make this novel worthwhile. My favorites have to be Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar, the hired assassins who are absolutely, disgustingly, hysterically funny. They get the great lines like: "Things to do. People to damage." Door is the intriguing heroine of the novel who reminds me a little bit of Morpheus's sister, Death, from the _Sandman_ series. Characters like Hunter and the Marquis de Carabas add comic relief and adventure to Richard's experience in London Below. And Richardrichardmayhewdick? Well, as the hero of the novel, he leaves much to be desired -- at first, anyway -- but he grows on you. One of my favorite scenes has to be the scene where Door and the Marquis are auditioning assassins. I laughed so hard that everyone in the office demanded to know what was so funny. I ended up doing a dramatic reading for the benefit of my colleagues. This is one of the dangers of reading Gaiman in a public place. The novel does have it's dark spots. Croup and Vandemar, for all their comic scenes, are assassins, and they do their job well. The Great Beast of London is no laughing matter, either, and to top it all off, there is a traitor among Richard and Door's companions. When I finished reading the novel, I found myself wishing I could visit a place like London Below. I've since read the novel three times, and each time I come away from it more and more impressed by Gaiman's gifted storytelling.
Rating: Summary: more please... Review: A dark, yet humorous story, fast paced and wonderfully told. Better known for his "Sandman" graphic novels and horrifying short stories, this is Gaiman's first, full length, novel. A much brighter and funnier work than anything else he has done. I hope to see more in this style in the future! Our hero, a mild mannered, extremely average bloke, finds that doing a good deed can be quite dangerous. In this case the good deed is saving the life of a young homeless girl. Or at least what he thinks is just a homeless girl. He soon finds out she is a princess of the "forgotten people" and the assassins that tried to kill her are now trying to kill him as well. But, when he tries to get help, it seems his world has "forgotten" him as well. All he wants is to go back to his old life, yet to get it back he must venture further on into the London Below, into this mysterious magical shadow world.
