Summary: Reminds me of Dr. Who
Review: From rooftops to the sewers, this "Alice in Wonderland" adventure takes you along for a ride thru dark London dreamscapes.

If you enjoy Clockwork Orange, Dr. Who, and such... You won't regret this read!

Summary: London Underground--Not Just the Tube
Review: This is a wonderfully imaginative read. Never again will you think of London in quite the same way. You'll never look at a dark stairway or tube entrance quite the same way again. In Gaiman's book, what goes on under the London I know is more colorful that what happens at street level. Richard Mayhew is the "Hitchcock like" figure--an ordinary man caught up in and extraordinary situation. We watch as Mayhew travels to London by train. His routine laden life seems to be on schedule and then he meets an injured girl on the street. He goes underground and into the world of incredible characters and scenes. Door, Hunter, the omnipresent and wicked Mister Croup and Mister Vandemar. Earl's Court (not like the one on the Tube map) and the magnificent Angel Islington. The swashbuckling marquis de Carabas. The "Beast" that lives in the London sewer system. This is extraordinary stuff. You will see parts of London from Roman and Celtic times that have long since been buried, but that are part of the underground world. Its a fun and dark story and one that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Summary: Neverwhere creates a dazzling world within our own
Review: Neil Gaiman, one of the most gifted writers of this age, certainly did not fail to deliver with his novel Neverwhere. Every bit as creative as the work he did with Good Omens, it takes you into the very heart of darkness of London, creating all the intricate supporting characters and alternative realites one could want. From the skittish charcter of the young girl, Door, who knows know bounds, Hunter, the enigmatic warrior, to the poor bloke, Richard Mayhew, who gets caught in the middle. A very fast-paced read with the feel of Dark City, this book comes with my highest reccomendation.

Summary: Written for young adults
Review: I liked this book, and I love the alternate reality/universe/world storyline. I just wish someone else had written the book. Stephen King, Connie Willis, Caleb Carr or anyone else who could write more descriptively.

I was hoping for a book like the Talisman, by Stephen King, and ended up being disappointed.

If you like fantasy books, I am sure you will like this one. If you want a book dripping with ambience, atmosphere and writing aimed at adults, this book is not for you.

Summary: Better than his Comic bok writing
Review: Neil takes you on the ride of your life. With every twist and turn you are pulled deeper into the under world. You'll find yourself checking over your shoulder because the characters are so real and the mental pictures are phenomenal.

If you are looking for something diiferent in Sci fi/fantasy and want a book that actually ends in that genre this is the book for you.

Read! Enjoy! and Never look back.

Summary: This is absolutely fantastic fantasy fiction!
Review: Neverwhere is a vivid, brilliant dark fantasy novel. Its settings in and around real London, and its dark brooding world intricately connected with the Underground makes you so very clearly envision its alternate reality and personalities (imagine an entire royal court on a subway car), you will not soon forget this imaginative, fantastical work.

Gaiman's work is so completely fresh and unique, imaginative and just pure genius at times. With enough humor and wit mixed in, he never falls into the trap of so many dark fantasists (taking themselves to seriously). It's a fantastic head-trip on a rollercoaster ride of the imagination.

Read Gaiman. Neverwhere, Stardust, Sandman...the new collection out soon...

Summary: Excellent plot and characters
Review: London below and London above, which would I choose? The obvious one. But neither one came alive, not at all, really, throughout the story. Gaiman starts off a little slow, building, then speeds up, slows down, and yet, it's always a good read. But, it's not a great read. Don't expect much from the writing; these words would be better served as a script, or a comic book; or with another writer helping to add vivid images. For example; a man hangs on a cross, crucified. He is bloody. That's all he says, paraphrased. I don't necessarily want to see such a thing, but that's the way it is througout the book. Some of the Characters are pretty one sided, like the bodyguard. Towards the end, the bodyguard becomes more alive, but untill then, might as well not say anything. The marquis, and Richard are good characters, Croup and Vandemar aren't bad either; though it would have been nice for Vandemar to grow a little. But then, after all the time they've been together it makes sense that he wouldn't. I definitely think this is a book worth reading, especially if you are tired of reading fantasy about all powerful characters who do everything. Richard is more pathetic then I am, most likely, more sad then you as well; and he almost has no redeeming qualities on the whole journey. He actually seems like he's there just on accident, not to solve every problem that comes their way. Which is a scent of roses over the midden heap, that a lot, not all by any means, of fantasy. A good read, and this is Gaiman's first solo novel.

Summary: The best part is Mr. Gaiman is young in his career....
Review: That means he has plenty of time to produce more work like this one. I have yet to read Stardust, but it is on my to-do list. This was one of the most imaginative and captivating books I have read in a long time. It brings me back to such epics as The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and The Lord of the Rings. While it isn't so much a knights and chivalry type of book, it is definitely epic. I hope Mr. Gaiman is planning a sequel.

The story takes an average guy (Richard Mayhew) with a boring life and throws him into a world that he never knew existed. A world where characters are unique and bitter in a hardened subworld. His life is changed forever as he goes from a white collared Londonite to "the warrior" once he has killed the beast. He teams up (or tags along) with the Marquis, Hunter, and Door, each of which are solitary character masterpieces in and of themselves. The arch enemies are primarily Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemir. These two are not only heinously evil but also funny at the same time.

This book was fantastic. I can't emphasis that enough.

Summary: This book was incredible
Review: It takes you to an entirely different world, it's a darker type of world but it's amazing. Neil Gaiman is an excellent writer and gives just enough detail to get a picture but let's you fill in a few details of your own. His style of writing is definately unique and it's a nice change of pace. It's just like the cover reads "A dark contemporary Alice in Wonderland".

I also read Stardust and will read anything else he puts out, great work :)

Summary: A reality
Review: ___

It's hard to rate books. I am giving 3 (and a half) stars to this book but it's soooo far away from, say, Marquez' "Hundred years of solitude". I wish there were more than 5 stars to choose from. Anyway...

I read the book some time ago and liked it but also, immediately forgot about it. Reading it, I was constantly reminded that this was not a surreal world but rather a parralel underground universe that, sadly, does exist. (Think of children in Romania living in sewers). A good metaphor of our society - people fallen "through the cracks" and abandoned on the streets... ... A reality 'everwhere'... ...
