Rating: Summary: Bleak Bleaker Bleakest...Did I Mention It's Funny? Review: I have been listening to this on audiocassette, and I suppose I'm experiencing what it must be like to be manic depressive. One moment I am laughing, the next I am overwhelmed by despair. One keeps turning into the other. An amazing book, the first of his I've read. omfg
Rating: Summary: This is the most amazing book I have ever read. Review: I'm not an amateur to Chuck's way of writting, I have read Survivor and Fight Club, which are both amazing books. But I find it incredible how he keeps going better and better every book he writes. Lullaby is sort of a mixture between Fight Club and Survivor. As always in Chuck's books, there are many life morals through out the book, yet this book, it seems there is one in every chapter. After every chapter you read, u have to put the book down, and actually reflect on your own life, you have to think about what he's saying and it automaticly changes you in some major or minor form. At the end of this book, which by the way I finished less than 30 minutes ago, I couldn't speak. I was so blown away by his writting. So if you're a Chuck Palahniuk (Paula-Nick if you're wondering) fan, or you're just starting out, buy this book. If this book doesn't blow you away, then you should not be reading these books.
Rating: Summary: not quite what I expected Review: I found this book to be rather interesting. I have never read any of the stories by Chuck Palahniuk, but, as the traditional media-driven person like the ones he describes in the story, I saw the movie 'Fight Club.' The reason why this is not quite what I expected was that the angle that the story took witht he narrator being a journalist was ammusing to me. I actually picked up this book to read over the weekend for a book review that will be run in my college newspaper for a news writing class I am enrolled in. The comments that CP made about views on the world, the media, the population, the crime and how it all plays into weather or not freedom is really free for us is a bit overused. However the way that CP did this was woven like a hook on a song that you can't get out of you head, just the way the narrator sopke of the 'culling song' and it mystical powers to use your subconcious to make your 'enemies' disappear. I founfd that this book definaltley fell under the cliche of 'a papge turner' however, I did finish the book in a relatively short amount of time. CP is a sure leader in this genre of writing, if not the only one to turely look at the everyday necessities and make us dislike our ways of living. I did find the beginning a bit confusing at first and I actually found that once I skimed over the first few chapters again, that I was able to understand wha the beginning was all about. I have always prided myself on reading books that I thought were truely worthy of my time, which included the classics from school, of course (we cannot learn about our future without first respecting our past), and horror/thriller novels. I think these two types are among the best type of novels because only a honest and knowledgeable soul could bare their insight on the world through a storyline and characters but only a true genius could find a way to invlove our nightmares into our own subconcious by taking that premise and adding something that you would never even dare dream of. Thsi will definalty be an author that I will add to my list. I would recomend this book to anyone who is willing to look beyond the words on the page and seem the meaning behind them, not from the author's point of view, but from yours. Definalty worth the time and money.
Rating: Summary: View From an Outsider Review: As a relative newcomer to Chuck Palahniuk's work (I've only read Invisible Monsters besides), I can't say anything about his other books apart from that I'd like to read them very quickly. However, I can say this - the man writes monster stories. Not horror stories, but monster stories about human monsters, which manage to be very enjoyable and sort of reassuring anyway. People who get confused over words and changes in time/place might not enjoy the book, as it gleefully mixes things up to make everything seem more real. However, if you can work these kinds of things out you should give it a try, because there's a good chance you will enjoy this book.
Rating: Summary: not his best, but still enjoyable Review: somebody could give you a few pages out of the book, and from that, you could tell that it's Chuck. It was anjoyable, and his style didn't get redundant or tired. I don't think it was on par with his other books, though. The end was rather weak. For a Chuck fan, it's worth reading. But if you're new to his work, try Choke first, or Survivor. Or even Fight Club.
Rating: Summary: The real Palahniuk is back Review: I'm not the only one who was skeptical about reading this book after a disaster like Invisible Monsters (call me stupid, but it just didn't seem to go anywhere, and it was written like Burroughs on a relapse). In as little as ten pages into Lullaby I was convinced it was wise to buy this book. Lullaby takes after a similar group adventure as Palahniuk had written in Survivor, but I found Lullaby to be a much more twisted, creative, and interesting plot. The suspense that Palahniuk manages to build up makes Lullaby one hell of a fast page turner. If you've never read anything by Chuck Palahniuk this would be a good place to start. If you're still skeptical about the book, you should know that I do read a lot, and it's been a while since I've been "wowed" by a book like I did here. Since Survivor was supposed to have been made into a movie, but decided to stop production because of September 11th, I really wouldn't mind seeing this one take its place on the big screen.
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK! Review: I recommend this book to anyone who likes Chuck Palahniuck's work. It has the same style writing, but is a different concept than Fight Club or Choke. But I really liked it. The book was full of unexpected turns.
Rating: Summary: Great Quick Read! Review: I picked up Lullaby even though I was reading another novel at the time. I wanted to see what it was about. Well, I started reading it and I couldn't put it down til the last page was turned. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The premise was original and intriguing. It was rather scary as well. What if there really was a lullaby out there that would [destroy] anyone you read it to? It can make you paranoid. As always, Chuck delivers a few surprises. You think one thing and it turns out to be another. I don't want to give it away, though. I would reccommend this book to anyone who likes Chuck. It also contained some fascinating info on witchcraft and vegan ideals toward animals.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: This was my first novel by this author, and I loved it. I admit at first it was a little slow, but it got alot better fast. The characters are original, the plot is sprawling and humorous, and even makes you think. This is one of those books that you dont fully understand whats going on until the very last page. This book is part thriller, dramatic story, and comedy. This is why Chuck Palahniuk is in a class by himself!
Rating: Summary: weird Review: It's deffinitely not his best book, but it's still not terrible. I am looking forward to reading more of his stuff, hopefully it'll continue to be weird, but better than this one.
