Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: This book hooked me from the very start. I started reading the day i got it and i could not put it down. Cant wait to read the next one
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK! Review: This book is a must read for any fan of the living dead or horror books in general. I have read many books on zombie's from wetwork to the books of the dead, and this one flat out beat them all. The author really knows how to set up the main characters and to put a sense of dread and yet hope in his work. The scene at the prison was excellent!! The stand was always my favorite book but this is #2.!I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL.
Rating: Summary: Worth a read! Review: This book is overall a strong effort and entertaining. The plot moves fast -- almost too fast. I found that I wanted more not only at the end, but from chapter to chapter. The characters in the story are well conceived, but the execution is lacking. I would give it five stars if the characters were "fleshed" out a little more (lame pun, sorry). Seriously, if you are a fan of zombie/apocalyptic fiction, you will be happy you read this book.
Rating: Summary: Old School Mayhem Review: This book rocked out! I give this puppy a 1 because it's numero uno. First, this guy with extensive military training somehow is camping with his guns and he pretty much hates everyone but has to go back to his business. He gets into town and blam! Action right from the beginning to the end. It's a frankenstein nightmare of the living dead. He gets together with some survivors who hook him up with an AK and meanwhile the government and church are bad and can't stop the zombies, so it's up to whoever's got guts to keep humanity going. This one preacher guy ends up leading a band of troubled teens to their final doom! In fact, a moral here is that if zombies attack you don't want to hide in a church or be a government employee, lol. I don't want to ruin it for anyone, but get this book and read it, the zombies are slow but you'll read it fast.
Rating: Summary: Ugh Review: This had some promise, but it suffers from a lack of an editor. The writing is choppy at best.
Rating: Summary: A great ride Review: This is a fun book with likable characters. The writing is servicable and clear with few typos. The author never attempts to get overly clever with language (Which can always backfire.) I read both this book and the sequel in two sittings and enjoyed them greatly. It was just as good as watchinga Romero film. Sure the setting has been done before but not quite like this. The characters are smart and rarely do the kind of stupid things they do in the movies. The chapters are short and to the point, a style I like. I would and do recommend this book to horror fans and Mr. Barthart is an author I will keep my eye on. Do yourself a favor, buy this book and the sequel. They are both by far the best "traditional" Zombie books out there. Also check out "The Dead" by Mark E. Rogers. It's not traditional zombies but it's fresh and scary.
Rating: Summary: A Waste Review: This is an easy if boring read. Some action but definetly not action packed. No scares. Cardboard characters.
The thing that most anoyed me about this book was it appeared like the author was going for a sci-fi cause for the zombies but then just dropped it.
The story just ends, its like the author just got tired of the story and said all the zombies die now. I hear there is a sequel wonder how he brings the dead back to life again.
Read The Zombie Survival Guide instead, more imaginative and much more exciting.
Rating: Summary: Dead, all right... Review: While the story does move around the George Romero concept, and involves several key characters, each with the possibility of dieing, it lacks depth. You don't really feel for the characters, who seem to be going through the motions. Still, the storyline itself is interesting enough, with a unique perspective on the whole " Living Dead " concept, by throwing more than one or one group of main characters at the reader. It just doesn't grab you and eat your brains like some others in this genre.
Rating: Summary: Had Potential Review: Yep, this book coulda been great. The concept is ripped right out of the NotLD movies. You remember, the dead rise for mysterious reasons, they eat the living, people struggle to survive, etc, etc. That's about how this tale goes too, all motions no depth. I really got the impression that this was planned on being a 2 parter, or maybe even a trilogy, considering that the ending was rather abrupt and without much resolve. I won't say what happens to the undead, or the humans for that matter, but it is pretty predictable once things get going. I'm sure that this could have been better. I'm actually giving a star higher than I normally would since this was his first novel, and I try to support anything that has to do with zombies. This is a good primer for a nice halloween zombie-fest, but little else. I usually read a book in under 4 to 5 hours if it's good, and I read this one on and off over a two week period. Sorry, I hope he gets better.
Rating: Summary: Year of the zombie Review: Your classic zombie story. If you're a fan of the old movies then you'll enjoy this book. It was a fast read and the action never let up. Looking forward to the 2nd book.
