Rating: Summary: Beginning of the Dark Hunters Review: Kyrian, a 2000 year old immortal, prince of ancient Thrace and General of the army of Thrace, was betrayed by his wife to the Romans during the battle for the freedom of Thrace. Allowed to become a Dark Hunter upon his death, his purpose is to stalk the evil demons who prey on humans and steal their souls. In present day New Orleans, Kyrian awakens one night handcuffed to Amanda Devereaux. Amanda believes she is the only sane person in her family, consisting of her mother and eight sisters, all with paranormal attributes. But Amanda's sanity is about to be shaken when she discovers that a demon has handcuffed her to this beautiful man who claims to be an ancient Greek warrior. Deciding to play with him, the demon gives Kyrian 24 hours to hide before he comes after him. Upon hearing this, Amanda is not too thrilled to learn that they cannot get out of the handcuffs and she will be subject to the demon's wrath unless Kyrian can figure out a way to release her. When they finally escape, Kyrian learns that the demon has burned down Amanda's house so he is forced to take her to his mansion for safe-keeping. Knowing it is against the Dark Hunter rules to become involved with a human, Kyrian cannot help his growing feelings for Amanda which puts her in terrible danger. This leads to complications at a time when Kyrian needs all of his powers against a powerful demon that none of the Dark Hunters have ever faced before. This is the beginning of a wonderful new series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. It is a compelling fantasy about immortals who are a bit like vampires only in that they cannot go out in the daylight, but they do not drink blood, and are created by the gods to protect humans from the demons who kill humans and steal their souls. The Hunters stand between the demons and the total destruction of the human race. I loved this book and cannot wait for the next one in the series.
Rating: Summary: paranormal perfection and the beginning of a great series Review: Sherrilyn Kenyon gets better and better. This is a shining example of what a paranormal romance should be. Kyrian of Thrace who I fell in love with while reading Fantasy Lover, is a man who was betrayed so badly by his wife that with his dying breath he sold his soul for vengeance and became a protector of mankind. Now, centuries later, he stalks the evil daimons ("vampires on steroids who have a God complex" [I really love that line]) who prey on humans. Amanda Deveraux is an accountant who wants a normal life even though her family is beyond strange. When an evil daimon puts them together and aims to kill both Amanda and her sister and any Dark Hunter he can find, Kyrian steps in to protect them. While they fight the evil baddies, the two of them find love and Amanda helps to heal Kyrian's tortured past and wounded heart. The story is spectacular, filled with great zingers and comebacks. I loved every character from Nick to Acheron to Talon to even strange Liza. The sex is steamy and hot and the pace fast and furious. I can't wait for the next Dark Hunter book. If you're looking for a read that you can't put down filled with humor, tenderness and red hot passion, don't miss this book.
Rating: Summary: Where can I get one??? Review: Oh man - when Amanda called Kyrian "yummy leather guy," that was only the beginning of describing the newest of the Dark Hunters. WOW! Sherrilyn Kenyon certainly knows what she's doing. She is able to consistently deliver quality reading material in all of her writings. Even if you aren't much of a fan of vampire stories, give these a chance. They are wonderful romances, well written with plenty of action. Sherrilyn spends much time with character development as well, so you begin to feel as though you "know" the characters as real people. Definitely check out her website - you won't be disappointed. You will be treated to introductions to all the Hunters - photos included ;) - along with treatments for upcoming books. And if you're really lucky, you might get to chat with a Hunter! One of the wonderful things about her writing manner is that you don't have to read one book in order to understand another (but why miss out???), nor do you need to read the books in any particular order, but the references from one story to another keep the thread of the Hunter universe alive. This is one series for which I am anxiously awaiting each new installment. Now, if only her website included ordering a Hunter ...
Rating: Summary: Yummy leather guy! Review: Kyrian of Thrace traded his soul two thousand years ago and has been a Dark Hunter since, an immortal who rids this world of the dangers of the vampire like Daimons who feed on the soul of humans. One day in New Orleans he wakes up to find himself handcuffed to Amanda Deveraux, an accountant who leads a normal boring life and likes it that way. They have been captured by Desiderius, a powerful Daimon who can only be killed by a Dark Hunter with a soul. The only problem is no Dark Hunter has a soul. A dark hunter has to win back his soul. Kyrian and Amanda managed to escape and they must hunt down Desiderius before they become the ones who are hunted down. Kyrian of Thrace was gorgeous (as with all of Ms Kenyon's heros) and you can just imagine all those rippling muscles, 6 pack abs jumping off the page. Amanda was a tough heroine and stuck by her man even though she wasn't sure there was any future for them together. The sex scenes are hot. Your fingers will get burnt turning the pages. I also like the introduction of other Dark Hunters such as Acheron and Talon (who is featured in the following book Night Embrace). Ms Kenyon's writing is full of humour and modern slang which adds a certain pizzazz to the book which is unique. A thoroughly good read and I can't wait to read the following books. Lealing
Rating: Summary: Am I missing something? Review: I'm a fan of romance, but I just don't get the vampire thing here. Aside from not really being able to care about the characters, I failed to sense anything dark enough to be disturbing or erotic enough to be really sexy. The book was mildly entertaining--adequate to break up an 8 hour international flight--but I can't agree with all the rave reviews. Perhaps I've read too many Anne Rice books to switch to vampire romances.
Rating: Summary: Who knew dark could be so light hearted? Review: Amanda Devereaux just wants to have a quiet, boring life. One that is the direct opposite of her vampire hunting sister's. But when Amanda awakens to find herself handcuffed to a stud with fangs, her life takes a turn for the paranormally adventurous. Night Pleasures, a direct sequel to the previous Fantasy Lover, launches a new series that will quickly be filling my shelves, if the books continue to be as fun as this one was. Recommended.
Rating: Summary: Night Pleasures - Oh Yeah Review: I am not going to tell you anything about this book, or the ones that follow it in the series. What I will say is that I love them all. Kenyon creates a world of the dark-hunters that exists within our world. Her immortals live in our neighborhood and eat at our favorite restaurants and shop in our boutiques. They are hot, they are fun, and I completely forgot everything but the world of the dark-hunters when reading them. By the end of Chapter 2 I was hooked. I have now read the entire series. I suggest you start at the beginning as the characters are related and the story is more interesting if you allow yourself to be pulled in gently. Fantasy Lover, is the weakest, in my opinion. In Night Pleasures, Kenyon gets better building on a character mentioned in Fantasy Lover and building the legend of the dark-hunters. Each book gets better as another character pulled from an earlier book is developed. This is no "read one and you have read them all" series. Each book is different, even when the characters overlap each others stories they only add to the community of the unusual. Of course I am a big Buffy fan, and I love Duncan MacLeod, so I am ripe for this kind of mystery/adventure.
Action, adventure, sexy, but all in balance. Action - they physically fight the bad guys. Adventure - he has lived over 2000 years. Sexy - but only with his soul mate. And balance, in true romance tradition there is a happy ending. Night Pleasures was a pleasure to read at any time.
Rating: Summary: Not Impressed with this First Dark-Hunter Novel Review: I was disappointed in NIGHT PLEASURES, especially after reading all the great reviews about it. Sad to say, the book actually reminded me of a poorly scripted, poorly acted made-for-TV movie on the Sci-Fi channel. NIGHT PLEASURES is the story of vampire hunter Kyrian, who must face his torturous past to help protect Amanda, a mortal sorceress, from being killed by a demigod. Amanda, in the meantime, strives to help Kyrian, a vampire himself, regain his soul. While the plot itself is not bad, the way it's written is. A lot of the story is cheesy, especially the action sequences (which feature somersaults and lame one-liners). In fact, the only thing I liked about NIGHT PLEASURES was Acheron, the fascinating Dark Hunter leader (judging from the author's website, it looks like there's going to be a book about him published in 2007).
Anyway, NIGHT PLEASURES is book #1 in the Dark-Hunter series, set in modern times. However, it would be helpful to read its prologue, FANTASY LOVER (which I enjoyed immensely). I also liked book #2 in the Dark-Hunter series, NIGHT EMBRACE, and am looking forward to reading book #3.
Rating: Summary: New Member to the "DH" fan club Review: I absolutely could not put this book down. I went to work on 3 hours of sleep because I had to finish it. Fans of the paranormal, like myself, get a whole new twist on the same-old, same-old of the vampire legends.
But, our tale starts out with Amanda Devereaux, an accountant who's family is a bit, ahem, 'eccentric' shall we say. She's got a sister who's a fortune teller, and one who's a vampire slayer, and those are the tame ones! As she put it in the book, "I have two sisters who used to conjure demons just to fight them." All Amanda really wants is to be 'normal'. But her longing for normalcy seems to be going nowhere, especially after her fiance dumps her, having attended one family dinner. She seems to be falling even further away from normal after she wakes up handcuffed to a vampire.
Kyrian of Thrace used to be a great general, leading his armies against the Roman Empire. After a great betrayal, and being crucified (note to squeemish readers, not a good idea to read that part late at night), Kyrian became a Dark Hunter, vampire-like creatures created by the Greek goddess Atremis to slay the real vampires, knows as Daimons. Kyrian calls them vampires on steroids with a God complex. And together, Kyrian and Amanda have to face down one *heck* of a Daimon whose God complex is off the Richter scale.
It may be hard for some people to grasp how quickly Amanda and Kyrian fall for each other, but my own mom and stepdad got engaged after 7 months, married after one year of knowing each other. For some people, in the right situation, love happens very quickly. I felt that Kyrian and Amanda had a very real romance (or a close as it can get in the paranormal), especially for the romance world.
All in all, I'm happy to have vampire slayers I can really get into, seeing as Buffy was never my cup of tea.
Rating: Summary: Great Book!! Review: This is a great book! I have only recently started reading paranormal romances. I started with Christine feehan, who seems to lack the humor that Ms. Kenyon has. I have read it at night and during my breaks, and any other time that I can fit it in.
I strongly recommend this book.
