Rating: Summary: Totally New Idea Review: I really, really enjoyed this whole series. It is, however, one series that absolutely needs to be read in order. NR does a wonderful job of describing so many facets of this book. The island sounds absolutely gorgeous & a great place to raise a family. Nr really pulls you into the atmosphere of the place (as usual). The feelings she described concerning Nell's past with the abusive (sick!) husband was so very realistic (however, I would not read a book that only focused on that type of relationship). I don't usually read about evil, but this book wasn't just completely about evil - it was just part of the story. NR could really make it feel creepy sometimes. I enjoyed the fact the there were so many secondary characters that really added to the story. Ripley & Lulu are a hoot - I always enjoy a little humor in a book. NR was very clever at adding humor to an otherwise very serious storyline. I've never read much about witches (never heard of Wiccan) but I did appreciate the values these lady's place on the Craft. No harm, don't change destiny. One reviewer mentioned that they were disappointed that there wasn't a bigger "bang" at the end of the book - I thought that also. However, just keep reading the series - believe me this is one series where the next 2 books just keep getting better. That "bang" is definitely coming! Book Two in the series (& the funniest): 'Heaven And Earth' Book Three in the series (& the most powerful): 'Face The Fire'
Rating: Summary: Frustrating, but good. Review: This is the first Nora Roberts book I've read, and it was recommended by a friend who thought I would appreciate the witchy content, since I'm Wiccan. I don't normally read romance novels, so I'm not sure how much some of the things that irked me are "part of the genre." First, what I loved. Nell's struggle to form a new life for herself was empowering and believable, she is an interesting and sympathetic character. I especially appreciated her efforts to "edit out" the inner voice of her abusive husband. I absolutely LOVED the island. Sounds like the kind of place where I'd give anything to live-- Martha's Vineyard but without some of the price inflation? ;) I loved the Ripley character, too. When she finally gives in to her Craft destiny, I could just SEE her "swagger into the circle." Now, for what frustrated me. I could just as easily-- perhaps MORE easily-- get into and sympathize with these characters if they weren't so perfect. So beautiful, accomplished, neat, talented, and skinny. (Must we know Nell is a "size six"? Would she be less sympathetic if she happened to be a size sixteen?) Most Witches I know are "average" people-- their beauty shines from within. The other thing is the fantasy-magic. Contrary to the Christian reviewer who thought this book was a primer for Wicca, it's not. You can't use magic to instantly bring dead flowers back to life, or create fire from nothing. Wicca is a beautiful and yes, magical religion. It's too bad that authors have to add the Dose of Hollywood to make it work for readers. I'm aware that romance readers probably aren't looking to see the warts in life, but if you're going to try for an accurate portrayal of an abused wife (and I think Roberts succeeded admirably on that front), why not go the extra step of realistic characters and real magic?
Rating: Summary: I like this author Review: I like this book. I would have like a bigger "bang" at the end, alittle more intense ending, but I like it anyway. I am anxious to read the second in this series.
Rating: Summary: Nora's Three Sisters Review: Nora Roberts has, in one fell swoop, made being a witch an enviable vocation. The ability to do magic with humility and dignity has never before been portrayed in such an inticing manner. Do what you will while harming none is a hard and fast Wiccan rule and Nora Roberts follows it to the letter. The "sisters" are portrayed as powerful and intelligent, yet kind and compassionate. Ms. Roberts research was impecable, her imagination devine. Dance Upon the Air draws the reader into it's web of intrigue, suspense, love and mystery. The characters are strong and interesting. The plot is woven to bring the reader around full circle at the end (just like the wheel of the year!)yet leaves you begging for more! I heartily recommend this book to Wiccan's, witches, warlocks and non-magical folk alike. It's a good read and is hard to put down.
Rating: Summary: Magic and Mystery Review: I am an newcomer to this genre of commercial romantic suspense. I guess Nora Roberts must be a great starting point. Having loved THe Witches of Eastwick, I thought I would give this trilogy a try. Ms. Roberts does indeed deliver just enough magic and mystery to be intriguing. Her heroine becomes strong and self-reliant as she leaves an abusive husband by feigning her own death; discovers a profitable career as a chef and caterer; makes new friends, perhaps even sisters; and finds a new love. A fun, escapist read, with the added bonus of two more books to follow.
Rating: Summary: Different World! Fantastic! Review: I thought this series was wonderful! Nora Roberts is the best romance writer out there. She always has a different story to tell. This trilogy is very unique and imaginative. I just couldn't stop turning the pages! The relationships of these characters are filled with love, humor, and passion. I had so much fun getting to know these characters and have missed them since I have finished reading these books. These books have a lot of excitement and great love scenes. I can't say enough about Nora! I stay up till 3:00 AM to finish one of her books! She takes me to a different world every time. Thanks Nora for all the fun! Keep it up!
Rating: Summary: Maudlin and contrived Review: I found the first half of this book to be completely engrossing. I read the first seven chapters in one sitting. Nell Channing is a wonderful heroine, sweet and vulnerable. She has escaped from an abusive relationship and has been on the run from her rich and powerful husband for months when she arrives at Three Sisters island and decides to settle there. She procures a job in the bookstore/cafe run by Mia, and the story of Nell begins to unfold and intertwine with the history of the island. What I found disappointing about this book is that the relationships seem shallow, the romance with the sherrif comes across as much too forward and not very romantic. If I had been a woman coming out of an abusive relationship I would have steered as clear of him as I possibly could. Furthermore, the allusions to witchcraft semmed rather cliche. With all the great wichcraft and horror novels and TV available, she should be able to do better. Maybe Nora Roberts should read some Ann Rice and see how it's really done.
Rating: Summary: Dance Upon the Air Review: This was my least favorite of the three. If you read a lot of Nora's book they become very predictable! It was pretty much a given what was going to happen - the only surprize was Sam Logan being a witch.
