Rating: Summary: Worthwhile, with a truly powerful ending Review: I AM LEGEND is a powerful tale of one man's life in an alienated world. While seemingly an 'end of the world' novel, Matheson manages not to fall into clisché, and his story is allways powerful and centered. The book is somewhat dated, and at times maybe unclear, but those are minor points. the ending, when Matheson's tale switches, is powerful, unexpected, and touching.
Rating: Summary: I Am Legend Review: This novel, although short, is absolutely outstanding. While this book is advertised as one of the best vampire novels of all time, it is really not about the vampires at all, but about a man. This is the story of what one man can endure, what his limits are, how much he can accept, and what will happen when he goes too far. Yes, there are vampires in the book, and yes, he does hunt them by day, but it's not an action story; the suspense is more pyschological. This is also one of the more different vampire books you will ever read. Somewhat short and written precisely, words are not wasted here, and the beauty and simplicity of the language is part of the appeal that this book holds. Robert Neville is an amazingly real character, and the ending of this book is perfect. While I have not yet read the multiple other stories by Matheson in this volume, I Am Legend alone is worth the cover price.
Rating: Summary: The Classic Vampire Story! Review: This is a classic novel. One of the best vampire survival stories I have ever read. The terror that you feel for the last survivor of the human race is incomparable. I loved it. Basically the story is about the last man who has survived on the Earth while vampires have taken over. As the story winds down, the ending is one of the best you can get.
Rating: Summary: Words Cannot Express Review: Words cannot express how I enjoy this book, but I will certainly try. I have hunted for this book for years, ever since I saw the movie "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price. And when I finally found it, I wasn't disappointed. The book was better than the movie (of course)! Matheson draws you in with the haunting idea of the last man on earth in a world of vampires. Even though he attempts to discover the cause of the plague, many things are left unanswered, which only adds to the horror. I have read this book more times than I can count, and almost always in one sitting. As an aspiring author, Matheson has inspired me. I hope I can write a tale that will haunt readers as this one has me.
Rating: Summary: The best of the Vampire World Review: A spell binding read of one man's life of sorrow and loneliness, the eternal outsider. One human in a world of vampires.
Rating: Summary: Increadible! Review: One of the best, if not, the best book I have ever read. I will say I haven't read the great classics like "Grapes of Wrath" but this is still a really great book. It is so compelling.
Rating: Summary: A Good Read -- If You're Not Old Enough To Vote Review: Despite being reasonably entertaining and diverting at times, "I Am Legend" is ultimately unsuccessful. Despite its short length, it becomes quite silly and boring after a while. And the inept, juvenile redundancies! How many times must the reader be subjected to descriptions of whiskey being drunk, spilled or thrown across a room? Who does Matheson think he is, Charles Jackson? Comparatively speaking, this book is inferior to Matheson's very good "Hell House," but superior to his awful "Now You See It." As for the stories in "I Am Legend" -- they are singularly amateurish and sophomoric, and I don't know how I got through them. If they constituted the book, without the presence of the novella, my rating would fall to one star. The bottom line? Younger readers will enjoy this book, but more sophisticated and experienced ones will be less than thrilled.
Rating: Summary: Vivid but exhausting... Review: I had to laugh at the reviewer who said this book seems "aimed at young children." Hello! Did they read the same book that is being reviewed here - I Am Legend by Richard Matheson? Frankly, this grown up was nearly sickened by it, as I am by most good vampire tales. I read them, but I always feel a little nauseous by the end. This one was no exception. This book seemed something of a metaphor for alcoholism - or any addiction - and its attendant symptoms of isolation/paranoia. And I have to admit I didn't quite get the ending. Exactly who were the people of the new society? Nevertheless, it was fascinating. You don't forget it when it's over...there's something about it that spooks you with the feeling that it could be real.
Rating: Summary: The End Review: This book is very scary. This book makes you think. Just think if were the last of your kind but your not alone you with a race of blood sucking vampires that want to eat you. That will give you something to talk about. I don't know about you, but I would be hinding so they couldn't get me. I would recmoend this book to people 10 and up.
Rating: Summary: Classic Vampire Review: If you like vampire books then you'll love 'I am Legend'. It creates a terrifying world where one man struggles to survive alone. Hunted and hunter, he becomes the abnormal; the one different to everyone else, the one to be scared of. Enjoy!
