Rating: Summary: I've read everything Koontz has written since Watchers. Review: The first Dean Koontz book I ever read was Watchers about 10 years ago. I thought it was great and have read EVERYTHING he's written ever since--even under other names. This book remains my very favorite and I have several. I get most books from the Library but I buy Koontz's books as soon as they come out.
Rating: Summary: A thriller that's hard to put down. Review: I've read 6 Koontz novels so far and WATCHERS is by far the best. If you like sci-fi thrillers, this one is highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Boring, little care in writing it. Review: Why is this book getting '10's' ? Is everybody smoking dope ? Maybe their eyes are blinded with tears from reading about the syrupy sweet dog. One or two lovable characters alone does not make a book 'great'. 'Watchers' is such a half hearted effort Koontz. Possibly 25 percent of it is just filler in order for Koontz to reach that magic 425 page minimum. Boring ! I could tell from the early chapters that this book ignored many of the basic elements of solid novel construction - plot, depth, pace, building tension, character development, word economy, constructing paragraphs for maximum interest - not a lot of thought or care was used. Sure it had a few good elements to it . 1) 'Einstein' the dog was lovable, believable, and a well thought out character. 2) 'Nora' was someone to care about. 3) The plot was ok and the story flowed smoothly. But everything else was just a mess. For example, 'Travis' was supposed to be a former member of Delta Force - give me a break ! This fact was played upon heavily but to me, it was a characteristic Koontz tacked onto 'Travis' much like a 1st grader would color a person's hair green - it had no rhyme nor reason. It did not fit 'Travis' character. Also, what's all of this 'venting' by Koontz through his characters ? He writes pages and pages about his boring beliefs concerning politics, genetic recombinations, and morals . It's one thing to seamlessly fit these things into the story line but because it was just thrown in , it served only to destroy the pace and detract from the story. If Koontz feels this strongly about these things, he should dedicate a non-fiction book to it and put it in there. Sorry, but I could feed my pet monkey alphabet soup and he could 'produce' a better book than 'Watchers'. Try harder Koontz, you have the talent. Forget about 'bank' . Take some of your millions and buy a writer's heart.
Rating: Summary: I'll never forget this one!! Review: I read this book years ago. I'm now writing an essay for my Science Fiction course in University and it is based on Animal Experimentation. As I was thinking of examples of this subject...I thought..."what was that Dean Koontz book called..." Thinking I could probably never remember the title having read it so long ago....But suddenly it came to me...WATCHERS!! as if I could ever forget it!! This book should be included on our reading list. Read this one over and over...it's worth your time and attention!!! (And Einstein is such a cutie!)
Rating: Summary: ~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!~ Review: WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW! Those are the only words that can describe this book. I loved this book, and could only put it down when I was shot, and lying in a hospital bed; that really stunk but thats another story that I am writing this summer. If anyone wants to contact me about my upcoming book, too bad because it doesn't exist at the moment. But Watchers is tons better than my book will be, so read it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Horror Par Excellence! Review: "Watchers" was an excellent book, one of the best Dean Koontz stories, even better then Phantoms. "The Outsider" was one of the best monsters ever created, and the human characters were so cool.
Rating: Summary: Thank you Dean Koontz for this wonderful book Review: OK, so I admit it, I'm a dog lover. I've lived with "fur faces" for the last thirty-some years. But even for those who aren't obsessed by retrievers, this book is still a must read. Dean Koontz's book is one I go back to time and time again when things get tough in life. His story teaches us to hold true to what is important in life- those we love. To be "watchers" over each other. As Nora says to Einstein (the dog), "We have a responsibility to stand watch over one another, we are watchers, all of us, watchers, guarding against the darkness. You've taught me that we're all needed, even those who sometimes think we're worthless, plain and dull. If we love and allow ourselves to be loved...well, a person who loves is the most precious thing in the world, worth all the fortunes that ever were. That's what you've taught me fur face, and because of you I'll never be the same." Thank you Dean Koontz for this wonderful story. Thank you for reminding us to be watchers.
Rating: Summary: The best book Koontz has written. Review: I personally consider this book one of Mr. Koontz's best and would recommend it to anyone. While some of it's content is technical, he takes great care to explain it in a way anyone can understand. The characters are endearing and well developed. This is a book that you can read many times and never get tired of.
Rating: Summary: One of my 5 favorite books of all times Review: I'm on my 3rd copy of it; have read it and loaned it out so many times. Einstein is the most amazing creature I've ever encountered in a book. And the fact that Koontz could make me feel sorry for the Outsider just indicates how well written this book is. If you don't read any other Dean Koontz book, read this one.
Rating: Summary: More than just a horror novel Review: Not only is this perhaps the mosty chilling and moving novels ive ever read, it is filled with social critisms. Koonts does here what Jurrassic Park did not. He is able to show the danger in scientists playing god, and how they put us all at risk. He also shows how animal rights extremists are just as dangerous for both us and the animals, as it is they who release one of the most horrifying monsters that yet still draws out the readers sympathy. That in istelf is impressive as the monster is out to destoy one of the most lovable and intelligent characters presented in a novel, the doug Einstein. This novel does more than scare the reader and draw out our compassion for the dog and this unfortunate freak of nature, it shows the danger of playing with nature. Very contemporatry with todays cloning issues.
