Rating: Summary: The ending took my breath away! Review: This book, while a bit slow in the beginning, ended with a bang! The "note from beyond" that is delivered to Lestat which drives him insane (only for awhile, though...) was the best part of the story. I don't know if the author was trying to say anything about her personal feelings on the Church and religion along it's lines or just tell a darn good story, but it worked!
A word of warning: not as action packed and thrilling as the earlier Chronicles (except for the last few dozen pages)...
The only really genuine dislike about this book was the whole section concerning the dead druglord and his strange obsession with the lesbian love cult books... It didn't seem to play any part in the book at all and never really came into play elsewhere in the book except when he and Louie read them at the end (but that was sorta like saying that someone put on their PJ's and went to bed--it didn't really mean anything). I thought it kind of wasted 100 pgs. or so that could've been used to tell some other, more pertinent story...
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down! Review: I thought this was one of the best books I've read from Anne Rice. She made you actually think about the devil--whether he was lying to Lestat the whole time and giving him false images or telling the truth and actually needed help. This book gave you no choice but to think about religion, not only the good side but the bad. Anyone who wants a thinking book should read this one.
Rating: Summary: Left me empty Review: I'm seeing a severe decline in the quality of Rice's novels. In the past, I would jump at one of her books on the bookstore shelf, now, I wait for it at the library and skim through it before I borrow! If you thought "Cry to Heaven" was bad, read this one
Rating: Summary: This is not a vamire book Review: I agree with almost all the negative comments already posted about this book. I have no idea why it was so well reviewed in the Kirkus review noted above. This book has nothing to do with vampires. It is boring (I skimmed the last quarter of it). The character of Lestat is, as has already been mentioned, almost unrecognizeable. Here is what I would recommend you do Anne: Write a story that features Louis again (I am sick of Lestat -- anyway you've turned him into the worst aspects of Louis -- the whining). The other possibility is to write more about David and the Talamasca. This would have been a logical next book after Body Thief. David is a fascinating character and I was dying to know how he was doing as a vampire. Is he longing to share what he knows with Talamasca? Why not tie this vampire link with the witches? I mean we learned in the last witch book that the Talamasca is in trouble. I want to know more about them! And David is just the person to find out the information. Doesn't David deserve his own book? Maybe he could be enlisted to help with all the trouble the Talamasca is going through with the witches back in New Orleans?
But please let Dora and Roger die a peaceful death. I hated them both, and it sounds like the rest of your readers did too.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book I have had the pleasure of reading Review: I am 15 years old and have read all five of the vampire chronicles and this by far is the best.
I was very intrigued by the story of evolution and how hell was formed, it was very interesting.
I look forward to the next chapter in the vampire series.
Rating: Summary: Anne Cashes In On an Old Reputation Review: Simply put, if Anne Rice wasn't the author, this book would not have been published. It is plodding , wordy refuse, overflowing with sophomoric logic. The potential of finding the reason for the devil's fall and his dialogue with God holds much promise but this molasses ball levels out with Memnoch arguing absolutely any point poor, stupid old God, tries to make. It would take an omniscient, all-patient entity to 1) not immediately thunderbolt both Memnoch and Anne Rice's respective, annoying asses and 2) comprehend this twisted web of horseshit.
Other than the foregoing, it's a must-read.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: It took me over a month to finish this book. If I like a book, it usually takes me less than a week. I kept putting it down for almost any reason... Even for (Ugh!) television. I read Servant of the Bones and couldn't put it down. The same with the other Lestat books. What happened to this one
Rating: Summary: Memnoch the Devil, a Vampire Chronicle?? HELL NO!!!! Review: Anne, you have proved to me that if you wait long enought, your heros will fail you. This book
has nothing to do with the Vampire Chronicles.
Who is Lestat and Armand in this book, certainly not the characters I know from the past books.
And also what do I care about the charater Roger. He has nothing to do with the story?! The good part of this book is Memnoch's story about God and Heaven and Hell but if I would really tell you the truth, it was trite and boring and non-developed. Anne take more time on writing books PLEASE???!!!!!. And also the endng was just pain stupid. Armand doing that. Anne dont you read your old books to keep consistenscy????? Please
People ignore this book, move on!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Just shoot me!!! Review: Spare me the "belief-challenging" bullshit. Anne Rice's last two books have been pure crap(MTD & SOTB). I fell like asking for my money back.On one side, you get to hear all about Anne's belief, and I mean everything. If you must buy it, wait for the paperback.(I recommend saving your money
Rating: Summary: You will never look at Heaven and Hell the same again! Review: Memnoch the Devil poses questions which we all have yet oftentimes do not dare ponder upon. Together with Lestat and Memnoch, the reader journeys through Creation, and visits Heaven, Hell and Purgatory, in a way that Dante would applaud at.
This highly descriptive novel takes you through a journey which none of us can accomplish while being alive. It raises questions, and opens up ideas and opinions for commentary.
It definitely impacts your outlook on death, God, religion, the afterlife and guides you through two completely opposite sides of the spectrum.
You will be transported from the pits of hell, through purgatory and into the beauty of heaven, together with Lestat, in a journey which will be unforgettable.
