Rating: Summary: Horrible, awful, terrible...need I say more? Review: This was the worst Anne Rice book I have ever read; in fact, I can't believe that she wrote it. It doesn't deserve to be a Vampire Chronicle. If Anne wanted to tell the world about her views on theology--which I found boring and incomprehensible--then she should have written it as a nonfiction book and not dirtied Lestat's name with it. Speaking of Lestat--what happened to him? He's a different vampire. She's turned him into a whining, sniveling wimp, nothing like his earlier fascinating evilness. The Lestat that I know and love wouldn't have fallen in love with Dora, and he certainly wouldn't have been able to shut up long enough for Memnoch to tell him all that garbage about God and Creation and everything else. Furthermore, that chains business was utterly ridiculous. Lestat is way too strong for that! And killing off Armand...how could Anne do it? He was the best of her vampires after Lestat and Louis. I hope that first-time readers don't choose this as their first Anne Rice book, because it will turn them off for good. Her other books are excellent (yes, even Tale of the Body Thief) but this one is awful. I couldn't even wade through all that theological stuff--I had to skip to the end of the book. Loyal Anne Rice readers will be sadly disappointed, especially those who were hoping for another spine-tingling romp with Lestat.
Rating: Summary: Read it in a day Review: This book has absolutely nothing to do with any of the other in the series aside from the fact that it does help to know what Lestat's previous experiences have been in order to understand his philosophy. I found it extremely interesting. it seems Anne Rice has tried to write "Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People" as a fictional novel, it works fairly well though. Interesting thoughts desguised in well written fiction. Seems to capture the religous ideals of "generation X" fairly well.
Rating: Summary: Very Disappointing Review: I was very disappointed reading this book. In my opinion, the plot was a veiled attempt to hide the true nature of the book, a place for Anne Rice to put forth her own theological views. I dont read the Vampire Chronicles for that reason. I read them to see what trouble Lestat is in this time. Though the storyline to this book was good, it would have taken away half the pages of the book if she had not put the theological theories. in
Rating: Summary: a fitting end Review: Memnoch was a fitting end to the chronicles of Lestat. after the body theif (which was definately not up to rice's usual standards) and watching the powerful character of Lestat become a weak, sniveling...Louis I guess...it was time to end Lestat's reign (i do hope her new vampire books take up where she left off early in the series, back to the old standards of writing). Memnoch was a fascinating character...I hope to see more of him in the future. dora was underdeveloped, but roger was well done. one of the best things about this book was anne's take on religion. it was excellent, gave me a lot to think about (but i won't spoil it for those of you who haven't read it). i think you should pick this book up just for the theology.
Rating: Summary: Fascinating take on the creation of the world. Review: Although I think "Memnoch the Devil" rivals "The Vapire Lestat" as the best Vampire Chronicle, it will probably not appeal to those who find religion boring. I personally found the ideas presented by Memnoch fascinating. He really got me thinking about the different ways the earth could have been formed. In short, if you are at all interested in different ideas about religion and the creation of the world, you won't be able to put this book down!!!
Rating: Summary: FACSINATING READ! I WILL READ IT AGAIN! Review: I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THE STORY AND THE THINGS IT GOT ME TO THINK ABOUT. ANNE RICE AMAZES ME WITH HER IMAGINATION WHERE SHE TAKES US WHEN WE OPEN THE BOOK. LESTAT AND ALL HIS ADVENTURES I HOPE GO ON AND ON. I LOVED THE BOOK!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Nicely done...but not her best Review: This book had the potential to be a great work... but alas...it wasn't. I had to force myself to finish reading it. This definately was not one of her best...she can do much better. She should have gone more in depth with Dora's character... shown us who she really was...Dora didn't have that sense of realism that Anne's characters usually do. Although, I did like her concepts. I am myself an agnostic and everywhere I look I see these great debates between science and religion... either the world was created through evolution or God started it all with Adam and Eve. She had a very interesting approach with God creating evolution...very good idea. If only more scientists and theologens could read this book... She made mistakes at the end though. (NOTE-- if you have not yet read the novel...don't read this next part), at the end after Dora showed the world the veil Armand steps into the sunlight... this is not in charcter, as well as Mael (although you don't actually! find out if Mael succeeds in destroying himself), she destroyed two of her great characters which she could have explored in depth in future chronicles. (although her next book is Armand...should be interesting to see how she pulls that off) All in all it was a good book...but not really when compared to the other chronicles.
Rating: Summary: It would have been her greatest novel ... Review: ... if she had abandoned the vampire connection. This could have been The Gospel of Memnoch, the Devil. It should have been. Here is a character to behold! To see the devil in a sympothetic light, hear in his own words, his view on us, the creation, and his beloved creator, was a spiritual feast. Imagine, if you will, that this Satan is a tragic hero of sorts. What rich ground to cultivate! One gets the feeling Anne Rice had been sitting on this Devil Interview for a few years, but didn't have the time to flesh out its own story. So, it appears that she bonded it, imperfectly, to her money-maker, Lestat. He is used as the vehicle for Memnoch to tell his tale. Now, I liked Lestat up till the Body Thief. Now he's been beaten like a dead horse. He was a distraction from the real meat of the story. Still, if you like to think about what could have been, read this book. It will let you see what could have been the most brilliant book of Anne's career.
Rating: Summary: Awesome read for the faithful and anti-christ alike! Review: This book was a blast to read. It's a masterpiece. Rice beautifully describes every detail, and the Vampire Lestat is one of literaure's most memorable characters. I was sad to see these chronicles end, but what an ending it was. If only this wasn't fiction, then all of our questions about Heaven and Hell would have an answer in this novel. Don't pass it up, even if it's your first time reading the Vampire Chronicles. Actually, Memnoch was my very first one, and I'm not starting read the others!
Rating: Summary: Very Very strange...... Review: This book wasn't that bad... but it was very strange on my part. I really think that the book should have been just a bit longer... and more about Lestat's experience in Hell and Heaven. Most of the book was also about Roger, one of the characters, which was also quite interesting. Since the book in a whole sense wasn't that bad, I guess the book deserves recognition, and that Anne Rice has made another great ending to another great series she has written (how does she do that, anyways?)! Enjoy if you want to buy it now. But be suprised at the end..... u will find out if you read it. P.S. If you are interested in Anne Rice books, you should also read "The Mummy, or Ramses the Damned" by Anne Rice.
