Rating: Summary: Fantastic!! Review: This book is by far one Anne Rice's best novels. All around she is a terrific writer although beacuse of her choice of subjects probably will not be recognized as such (which I think will be a terrible pitty). In every book Anne puts a piece of herself into the writing and I believe Memnoch is no exception. Her descriptions of God, the Devil, Heaven etc..are facinating. This book is in a higher class than the remainder of her novels (not to say that I didn't enjoy the rest) and I congradulate her on a job well done.
Rating: Summary: Beautifully written work Review: I thought this work was very good. It contains a much different view of God, the Devil, and how the Earth was created (with some scientific aspects). The Devil is seen as more of a tragic creature when trying to persuade Lestat into helping sinners to receive salvation. Anne Rice also sees God as much more human and yet he maintains his humble character. Overall, I support her view of what happens in the next life.
Rating: Summary: Good, but not the best. Review: Memnoch is a fascinating character and he presents an all new view of life, and religion. I begin to wonder if Anne Rice could be onto something in her portrayal of Memnoch. I am saddened by the deaths of some of my favorite characters in this novel, but their deaths also serve to create an even more suspenseful reading. This book does not compare to The Vampire Lestat or Queen of the Damned but it greatly outshines it's immediate predecessor Tale of the Body Theif. THE END
Rating: Summary: excellent Review: I have read all of the vampire chronicles up to book #5. I am glad I decided to start reading Ann Rice's books again, continuing with the vampire chronicles. Memnoch the Devil is truly a an excellent book. I started reading Ann Rice with "Interview with a Vampire", I have always felt that Lestat was talking directly to me. Ann needs to keep up the good work. I hope to be reading Vampire Chronicles until I am old and gray.
Rating: Summary: "Anne Rice is the best!" Review: From Tale of the Body Theif,Belinda, and The Vampire Lestat. She's got my dreams on paper. She's that great. Can't wait to read the Vampire Armand and Memnoch.
Rating: Summary: It Stinks! Review: This story is plainly repulsive. Going from drinking the blood of Jesus from his neck, to the menses of a woman from her undergarments. Not for the faint of heart, or those with self respect.
Rating: Summary: outstanding, almost biblical. An excellent book. Review: Anne Rice's fifth instalment of the ever popular Vampire Chronicles pits our hero Lestat in a battle between God and the Devil (Memnoch) for his soul. This book has been harshly reviewed by some. I have to admit it may not fit in to the Chronicles as well as the first three books, but on its own Memnoch The Devil is an amazing dive into a world ofbeliefs, religion and fantasy. I believe this book may be the best inthe series and is definately a must for those who have already read the Vampire Chronicles. This book shows Anne Rice's ability toshock and amaze all her fans with an almost biblical account of her new story. *****FIVE STARS
Rating: Summary: The book was a stinker Review: Notice that the people who rate this book so highly ("Best in this century" - Hah!) are also the people who say this is the first Anne Rice book they ever read. So why would so many people start a series a number 5? Because they heard it was a big load of psuedo-theological muck that offends everyone. They like that kind of stuff, so they seek it out. Their review was written before they opened page one. And what do they praise? Two things: 1) It warps and distorts Christianity (and attacks on Christians are always popular, count the number of instances of the words 'religous right' and 'bible-thumper' in the review above to see for yourself) 2) It has a distorted view of sexuality (as if oral sex during menstration with a televangelist were somehow 'liberating') The repeated implication that people who hated this book just 'didn't get it' is extremely stupid, and the attack on those who were offended as being 'closed-minded' is just as foolish. The fact remains that the book was just awful. It failed as a VampChron because the characters and universe were completely rewritten to be shaped around the agnostic diatribe that composes the heart of the book. It fails as literature because it was so poorly written. It fails as philosophy because it is nothing more than a series of wild, unconnected, and inconsistent attacks based on a misunderstanding of the faith which is being vilified. It even fails even as propaganda because it is so boring that it cannot even hold the attention of the masses. The thing that frightens me is the alarming number of people who have posted that this book now forms the basis of their moral faith (or at least an excuse for them to drop their previous faith and embrace moral relativism). Anne Rice as prophet? Please no! If you read Nietzsche for entertainment (and are always looking for more ammo to attack your friends who actually believe in something) then this book is for you. If you like complete sentences and a plot to go with them, please stay far away.
Rating: Summary: NOTHING Review: I love the Vampire Chronicles, but this was just one giant prologue. I kept waiting for something to happen. Finally it did, the book ENDED !!!
Rating: Summary: Quite Remarkable Review: As my first foray into Anne Rice's world of the vampires, I can say honestly how astounded I was with Memnoch. The novel is absolutely breath-taking in its scale, the colours it provokes, and the variety of the characters you conjur in your imagination. I recommend this book to anyone who can read - it really is that good. There seems to be a lot of negative reviews of this book, but maybe they didn't quite catch the hook? My only wish is that I had read the other chronicles before this, but c'est la vie.
