Rating: Summary: If you can't afford to rent X-rated movies Review: I had heard Laurell started writing her Fey series so she could 'get it out of her system' and bring the Anita Blake series back to what it was with the first few books. So when I checked this book out of our library, I had high hopes. After less than three dozen pages I saw what writing her other series did was just the opposite. Not only are we seeing the same level of wanton sex, we are now also seeing extreme torture and bondage. I tried to stick with it in the hopes the book would not be too bad, but when Anita ended up in bed with 4 men at the same time I called it quits. But Laurell did at least have the characters take steps to make sure Anita did not get pregnant.
Rating: Summary: Unbelieveable! Review: I LOVED the new book! Other people may think that Anita's out of her usual character, but I think she has just grown into who she is. I LOVE Micah. He really understands her, which is a nice change from Richard! Anyone who didn't like it was crazy! It was one of the best ones yet!
Rating: Summary: Classic Anita Review: For those of you familiar with our vampire slayer, you'll be in for a treat with Narcissus in Chains. Blake returns to her stomping grounds of St. Louis to find all hell has broken loose in her pard. Anita saves her kidnapped wereleopards from a cross dressing D/S patron. It is here where we have found out that during the past six months of her absense, a lot has changed: including Anita.Hamilton piles on the action in this new installment of the Blake series, we see the same interplay with male/female roles. I think it is fair to say that it is Anita, herself, who is the most masculine of the characters in the book. This novel is a thrill ride that leaves you gasping for air at every turn.
Rating: Summary: Magic Like Heat Across My Skin Review: First off, a bit of advice. Do NOT start reading this series with NARCISSUS. Not only will you not get some of the nuances, you'll need a flow chart complete with index cards to keep everyone straight. I've read some of the reviews and they seem mixed. We either love it, or we hate it, and there doesn't seem to be an in-between position. Well if I have to choose sides you can firmly plant me in the "Loved it!" camp. NARCISSUS positively sizzled in my hands and I almost couldn't put it down (unfortunately real life interceded)! This is most definitely a transition book. We're seeing Anita head into unfamiliar territory, along with all the men (and she does seem to be acquiring a bit of a harem) in her life. She's gaining power, no question about it. And as her power grows she's having to ask herself some hard questions, ones I don't think she particularly wants to ask: questions about her morality, about her humanity, about her boundaries, and about her faith. This book is about growth, about the growth of the pard, about the growth of Nathaniel, about the growth of magick, spirituality, and power. It's about Anita's growth into what she's become. I think that for many of the previous books Anita has hated what she is, animator, necromancer, lupa, Nimir-Ra, etc. With this book I think we're paving the way to a gradual acceptance of who and what she is. Reading the books I always find myself wondering how much of them could be real. Maybe energies and auras DO mix like that. Maybe it IS possible to raise the dead. Maybe vampires do walk the earth, wereanimals do exist, and a woman can call power to her as easily as breath. For those among us who want to believe that our energies reach out to each other and call to each other, Hamilton writes in ways that make us believe it. Ms. Hamilton, I look forward with great anticipation to where you're taking Anita (and us) next on this journey. I, for one, am enjoying the ride.
Rating: Summary: Review for Current Laurell K Hamilton Book Review: I loved this book! I have all of the other books from the Anita Blake Series and the characters (old and new) in "Narcissus in Chains" are amazing. You learn more about the characters that you've come to care about and more about what motivates them to do what they do. The great thing about this book is that even if you have never read about Anita Blake, this book can stand alone. I personally think that the whole Anita Blake Series is terrific and so is the newest Saga in her life.
Rating: Summary: Another great in the Anita Blake series Review: I loved this book and the only reason that it didn't get 5 stars is the introduction of an character that i don't like. the books keep getting better and i hope that Anita keeps going.
Rating: Summary: If you didn't expect it to go this way, you're blind. Review: I've read some of the negative reviews about this book and Kiss of Shawdows that truly just make me want to scream. I mean yes the original cover art on the earlier books was extremely misleading, and for that reason alone, I'm glad they've switched to the new art. From the first book on with all of the violence and horror (that gave me nightmares), there are not childrens books, and I view children as anyone under the age of 16. From the beginning, the Vampire and Were worlds have always been about sex and pain and a lot of both. Even the first book didn't make any bones about that. To complain now after 10 books that the sex has gotten to be too much and that it should go back to the way it was before is to completely ignore the whole character development of Anita Blake. The books have all progressed very logically. The deeper she goes into the world of the "monsters" the more she encounters sex and violence. My advice is "If you didn't like this, go back to reading the first 4 books because you're not going to like the next ones that will continue to take Anita further away from the world of humans." Now for my petty remarks: Have always thought Anita should dump Richard, and Woo-Hoo keep Micah - like him and what he does for Anita.
Rating: Summary: What Happened!! Review: I started reading the series and fellin luv but in this book I really felt cheated. When I heard there was a new Anita Blake book comming out I counted down the days until it was out. And when i read it i was really disapointed. There is waaaaaaaaaay to much sex in this book what happened to anita's morals? And what is up with all this new magic stuff. LKH better make it up with the next in the series. I will still look for the next one
Rating: Summary: What???? Review: Where do you start? As a diehard AB fan I could not wait until I could get my hands on this book, I even pre-ordered it. To say I wish I hadn't bothered, is a little harsh but boy it is not the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter, that I have grown to know and love. What happened to the Anita we all saw in the first 8 books of the series? (I omitted Obsidian Butterfly, because quite frankly I HATE it!) What powers does Hamilton intend to give Anita next? ... after all she is virtually indistructable, has the powers, or is gaining the powers of:- a Master Vampire and a wareleopard, and she is a necromancer! What else is left to give her? I know a lot of people have been commenting on the amount of sex in this novel, (what) bothers me its the LACK OF PLOT!! The last 50 pages of this 300 + page novel are given over to Anita's attempt to defeat the bad guy. And even then she seems to do it with astonishing ease. Many of the main and essential characters are missing from the book, well they are there but not, if you get what I mean... We see a little of Richard(who hates himself even more now he has accepted his beast, what is with that?), Less of Jean Claude (who has just turned into Anita's lap dog!), and Asher and the rest of the gang are just passing shadows with no depth to their characters at all! And then there is Micha ... Where did he come from? And what is with this unquestioning devotion and acceptance of Antia and everything she does? The reader needs more info into his background and character. And quite frankly, the Anita Blake of the previous novels would not have had sex with him a few minutes after meeting him, adeure or not! This is a poor book, although it has not put me off the series, I am just hoping that the next installment of Anita Blake will be a whole lot better than this one. One final question for Ms Hamilton:- WHAT WERE YOU THINKING? Give us back the Antia Blake of the first 8 books!
Rating: Summary: The Story of A Review: I can't recall anticipating the release of a book as I did "Narcissus in Chains". I also can't recall being so disappointed in a book. The promise of what could have been was never fulfilled. The story opens with Anita renewing neglected friendships, beginning with Ronnie. They are celebrating Ronnie's birthday, and arguing over Anita's life, when Anita gets a call. Nathaniel's in trouble. Again. In order to rescue him, Anita asks Jean-Claude for help. Anita, Jean-Claude and Richard meet at the nightclub where Nat is being held and the three 'marry the marks'. What an opening! And what a letdown the remainder of the story was! We never see Ronnie again. RPIT makes a token appearance. Anita is infected by Jean-Claude's incubus and has sex with a stranger. Anita has quasi-sex with Nathaniel, who she's always viewed as a somewhat damaged child. A huge cast of wer creatures is introduced, so many that keeping them straight requires charts and diagrams. Along the way this poorly written soft-porn novel loses track of whatever plot was planned. This story is a series of plot devices to allow Anita to have sex, sex, sex - The Story of A. It doesn't work. It's too big of a departure from what we know of Anita. Based on the previous nine books, I didn't know this Anita. If I could give this book no stars, I would. I wouldn't recommend buying it. Check it out from the library and spend your money elsewhere.
