Summary: I Hope To See More...
Review: After being banned by the local coven from casting runes when it is suspected that she is causing diseasters by predicting them, Joy accompanies her friend, Roxy to the Czech Republic to meet a favorite author and learn more about the Dark Ones. It was just supposed to be a fun way to get out of Dodge, but Joy quickly finds it to be much more. It appears that she is fated to be the eternal beloved of a vampire, but which one? Is it Christian, the enigmatic author searching for a soul mate to hold back the darkness he has avoided letting rule his heart? Is it Dominic, the probably fake vampire? Or Milos? Or, hopefully, the oh so hot Raphael, excuse me, Bob. Raphael thinks his name would sound better on a gigalo than on him. Each one of the men has secrets, is attractive, and appears interested in Joy. However, this bubbly American only has eyes for one of them, no matter what Fate decrees.

If the vampires and mysteries of love weren't enough to cope with, Joy manages to stumble into the midst of an Interpol investigation and a murder. If she's not careful about her choice, she might be next. Even if she avoids being the next victim, she might have to make the ultimate sacrifice to save her lover.

*** You might be expecting a laugh a minute by the quirky title, but there is more to this than a parody. Like Buffy, the humor is set against a serious background, made of the combination of romance, passion, and death. Balancing all of this is tricky, but Ms. Macalister handles the juggling act well. She has left the door open for a continuing series, and I hope she walks through to keep this world of hers alive. ***

Summary: Spare me anymore of MacAlister's TSTL heroines
Review: As a big fan of vampire romance, I was so hoping that Katie MacAlister's last book, Improper English, was an aberration. But it wasn't. It turns out that annoying, sarcastic, spoiled brat heroines are MacAlister's stock in trade. What a pity since she writes generally yummy heroes, their only fault being that they actually fall in love with the ditzes MacAlister pairs them up with. Raphael, the hero of The Girl's Guide to Vampires, is as hunky a hero as a romance reader could want, but come on. Any man this intelligent couldn't possible fall for a brat like Joy. One of MacAlister's favorite plot devices is for the "heroine" (and I hesitate to call Joy a heroine) to blow up at the hero and whine like a kid because he's got some secret he can't tell her. Never mind that he's professed his love and has shown tenderness and intensity as a lover, never mind that he wants to protect her. No, instead we're treated to Joy's temper tantrums and crying binges.

Another thing MacAlister doesn't make me believe for one minute is that Joy and Roxy are best friends. If any so-called friend sold me out as often as Roxy did Joy in this book, I'd have ditched her long ago. They bicker and snipe at each other so much that I can't buy into the idea of their being acquaintances, let alone friends. Roxy is an even bigger brat that Joy. Maybe they deserve each other. All I know is that I don't deserve another read as unsatisfying as The Girl's Guide to Vampires.

Summary: fun satirical romance
Review: Based on C.J. Dante's Book of Secrets Roxy and Joy head to the Czech republic ostensibly seeking men, but it is the in place for vampires. The two American females attend the Moravian Gothfaire on All Hallow's Eve at Drahanska Castle where they meet men claiming to be vampires. Of course these modern women reject the notion of someone drinking blood from a live mortal though the participants heat their blood.

However, Joy begins to envision weird happenings like blood drinking. She starts to wonder if a real vampire is sending her flashes as a means of courting her. Could that creature of the night be the human hunk Raphael St. John who makes Joy's blood boil or is someone else seeking her as his soul mate?

Readers who delight in satiric romances will want to learn the rules of A GIRL'S GUIDE TO VAMPIRES. For the most part the story line is an amusing farce that loses some steam when ironically the plot turns into a terse suspense murder mystery. Raphael is quite the hunk whether he is or isn't a vampire and the support crew like Roxy and another pal Miranda add depth. However this tale belongs to Joy, the six foot brick oven Amazon, who, no one in their right mind regardless of gender will want to fight without supernatural powers.

Summary: Yowza!!!
Review: Having read all of Katie's adult books, I was not suprised that GGV was great too. She is a very witty, brillant writer, who never fails to make me laugh and enjoy the book. She always draws me into the story, and I feel connected to the characters. She writes steamy love scenes with the best of them!

If you haven't already, I would strongly suggest that you read Katie's other books like Improper English, Men in Kilts, and Nobel Destiny.

Summary: Cute cover, cute story
Review: Heroine: tall and sturdy

Librarian Joy Randall has a guilty pleasure--she enjoys reading the "Moravian" vampire romance series. But she never for one moment believed there was a grain of truth to them until she visited the Czech Republic and met a Dark One up close and personal.

Trouble is, she's only met him psychically, when he drew her awareness within himself and let her feel him feeding. She has no idea what he actually looks like, which is unfortunate since he could be one of the many men who are fighting with each other to win her affections--and the prime suspect in a murder case.

What worked for me:

If one thing stood out overall in this story, it was the humor; there were some great lines of dialogue in it. (I would say the next most noticeable attribute was the heat of the sex scenes.)

The mystery piece was fun. I thought I had nailed down who the killer was, but the ending surprised me a bit.

There were not one but two delectable hunks to drool over.

Size-wise Joy was six feet tall and very sturdy.

What didn't work for me:

I had some trouble suspending my disbelief, not so much over the vampirism, but over some of the heroine's actions. I'm the kind of reader who puts herself in the main character's shoes, and I just could not see myself doing some of the things Joy did.

The first person point of view made it harder to get to know the other characters in the book. I also felt like Joy's best friend Roxy could have had more "screen time".

Overall:
"A Girl's Guide to Vampires" is a lighthearted romp for folks who enjoy humor in their paranormals, but for those who prefer their vampire books on the serious and scary side, it might not click.

Warning: It goes without saying that there are some elements of the occult in this story, but it also has some spicy moments sexually.

Summary: Annoying, aggravating and put me in a very bad mood.
Review: Hmmm, maybe it's my mood but the heroine of this book came across as snarky and immature as opposed to "witty" and "fun" as I've seen her described elsewhere. Maybe I'm just a grouch but the author manages to lampoon Wiccan's and Goth's and romance reader's in a way that is more insulting than hysterical.

I ended up throwing in the towel at 100 pages. It just wasn't funny. The heroine and her friend come across as a pair of idiots. Running off to Eastern Europe to find a group of vampires she's read about in a FICTIONAL novel?! Roxy, the stupid and annoying best friend, thinks she's going to find herself a vampire and he'll fall truly, madly, deeply, forever in love with her instantly because he's attracted to her high IQ . . . (no, even Roxy is not quite that stupid ~ she knows she'll nab a vamp because no man can resist her gorgeousness - puleez). Roxy drags Joy (the heroine) along for the ride and silly conversations take center stage.

This exchange, following many just like it, is what finally did me in:

The heroine to who I'm guessing is supposed to be the love interest:

"For your information Mr. So-Stuck-On-Yourself-You-Probably-Attract-Flies, I was not flirting! I do not play games! And I most certainly was not batting my eyelashes at you, so you can get that idea right out of the pudding that passes for your brain!"

"Pudding" he bellowed at me, outrage bristling from every pore.

"Vanilla. With lumps in it!" I bellowed back.

Witty, and quick this Joy is, eh?

Seriously, I could not make this stuff up folks.

Summary: Katie Macalister is a wonderful writer!!!!!!!
Review: I absolutely love all of her books but this one was wonderful. Soooooo funny!!!
The heroin is hilarious and she stands up for herself. I like that portrayal of her, as a strong woman and not some little submissive girl who does whatever the man tells her to.
I would defintiley reccomend this book to anyone who love vampires and humor. Katie does a perfect mix of both.

Summary: If Seeing is Believing - - I Can't Wait for More
Review: I am so happy that I took the chance and purchased "A Girl's Guide to Vampires" as I've never read any previous novels by Katie MacAlister.

This novel was not only a good read, it is filled with humor, mystery, danger and to top it off, it's a wonderful love story - and it simply offers a little of everything to the reader. The characters, Joy, Raphael, Christian and Roxy jumped off the pages in living color into my world and my heart. You truly care about what happens to each of them. The characters in this novel demonstrate exactly how much they are willing to sacrifice for love.

The only problem I had with this novel, "was Joy really was Christian's "Beloved""? I say this because the feelings she initially had towards Raphael were the emotions evoked by Christian but since she saw Raphael first and not Christian those feelings were directed towards Raphael and she ended up with him and not the man she was destined to be with. I know she had a choice and although I loved Joy and Raphael together, I still feel a deep sadness for Christian as he was amazing and a true gentlemen but I still sort of wished it was he who ended up with Joy regardless of her being damned as foretold my Miranda. The characters in this novel demonstrate exactly how much they are willing to sacrifice for love.

Regardless of how the story ends, it was still a sensational one that you don't want to miss out on. I loved this novel and also the author who has done an excellent job with this particular work.

In closing, I guess we'll find out more about Christian with the continuation "Sex and the Single Vampire". If you haven't had the opportunity to read Katie MacAlister take a chance as this author is definitely going places.
