Rating: Summary: This is one of the best books ever published. Review: This is by far one of the greatest books in the English language. Stephen King knows how to write epic books. What makes this so good is that the plot is believeable. This book could happen in real life at anytime. That is what makes it so scary. Still, King knows how to get into the minds of his readers and scare the living daylights out of them. He also knows exactly what we want. King is able to create characters and give then a personality and make the readers think that they actually know the characters.
Rating: Summary: A triumph of characterization Review: King has always been a master of creating living, breathing, characters, but in The Stand he outdoes himself. There have to be close to one hundred characters in the book, and each of them has a unique and memorable personality. This story also possesses a fascinating vision of the possible end of the world at the hands of a virus (could happen..) while blending it with real human stories, well integrated subplots, and even humor. A must read - particularly for King fans.
Rating: Summary: Fantasic! Review: This has got to be one of the best books ever written, and I am so glad that Stephen King published the uncut version instead of leaving us with just his cut version. I couldn't imagine The Stand without each and every word originally in it!
Rating: Summary: Great Characters Review: The more I think about this book, the more I like it. The first 200 pages were the best in the whole book, detailing how the disease spread and society's reaction to it. After that the book changes tracks big time. Yes the book is 1200 pages and yes, there are some slow parts. But those slow parts aid in character development which is where this book really shines. I will usually take a good plot over good characters, but this book is an exception. After the first 200 pages the plot deteriorates slightly but the detailed, interesting, believable characters almost make up for that fact. And unlike so many other authors, King isn't afraid to kill off a main character to keep us guessing. A minor annoyance that I experiences was that because of the sheer amount of characters (and their different locations), this book tends to jump around a lot, which I found slightly frustrating at times. However, I don't know if it could have been helped. I have had dreams about this book the week after I read it. It stands (no pun intended) as my first Stephen King book and I will probably read more of his work.
Rating: Summary: Easily my favorite book; and I don't worship King. Review: _The Stand_ is a fantastic read; enormous in scope and rich in imagery and dialogue, easily King's magnum opus. The plot and all characters are fully realized; it's a book that can suck you into it's world with little effort on your part. If you haven't read _The Stand_, regardless of whether or not you're a King fan, do so. Note- I prefer the "cut" version, if you can find it- I've read both probably 6 times each or more.
Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING WORK!!!! Review: i just couldn't put it down...and every time that i tried i was left wondering what would happen to them. The way king gives the characters such depth makes you want to read every one of his books. I've seen the TV movie and let me tell you, it does not do the book justice..i found that after i read the book and saw the movie..i felt like turning the thing off. so if you havent read this book...read it...but dont see the movie!! and if you've seen the movie and didn't like it..read the book anyway because it's sooo much better.
Rating: Summary: The best book King has written. Review: I have read about 15 of King's works and this one is the best. You must read the uncut version in order to experience the full impact of the story. I could not put the book down. The book is long, but you get so wrapped up in the story, you wish it were longer. A definite read for any King fan or anyone who wants to read a fantastic and engaging story.
Rating: Summary: The Stand is the greatest book of all time Review: The Stand was one of those books I picked up and I didn't want to put down. I was sitting on my bed, reading along, I was so absorbed in it that when the telephone rang it startled me and I thought, 'Oh my God, I'm the only person left in the world, what am I going to do?'. The characters were realistic and powerful. It seemed to me that they were truely alive, struggling to defeat Flagg. I loved this book and I think it's the best book King has ever written.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book! Review: Stephen King delivers in this tale of the final battle between good and evil. great characters fill every page ( my favorite is Tom Cullen) and well drawn scenrios combine for a great book! My suggestion, write a sequel titled " The Stand: 20 years later."
Rating: Summary: an *entertaining* *american* *novel* Review: For people who don't like books that ignore the rest of the world, don't read this. This is a book about America and our problems, about individuals and their problems. This is a character-oriented book, as most of Stephen King's work is. That's why I love him -- he provides interesting stories *and* interesting characters. Certainly there is room for disagreement. But read the book anyway. You will most likely love it, and if you don't, you'll at least know why!
