Rating: Summary: It's the end of the world as we know it Review: This is defenitely my favourite book of all! All those people who are used to Stephen King's horror stories still won't be disappointed by the great story, and especially the great characters Stephen King is so good at developing. My favourite character is doubtless Stu Redman, and for you readers out there, there will also be a figure that just captures you and that you learn to love. You will know how this person thinks and what his or her intentions are, and this is just one of the remarkable side effects this book has. The story, the apocalypse, is put into a 90ies athmosphere, but still contains the basic features of good versus evil. Not too Christian, but enough for everyone who really believes into the end of the world, and that it is going to happen this way. For the others it makes up a thrilling, but realistic story about being good and being evil and the consequences when the end -in the book in the form of a plague- comes and judges the people. I can recommend The Stand to everyone on the planet, it's the best book I've ever read.
Rating: Summary: The Stand Review: If you have not read this book you must have been in a cave. Stephen King's "The Stand" is another one of Kings greatest accomplisments. Roughly it extends to 1000+ pages yet delivers in all aspects of quality and quantity. King has a style all his own in which he expresses the dark and the light sides of the USA after a superflu which wiped out millions of people. This book "stands" out in my my to be one of my favotite books of all times. This is a must read even if you are not a King fan.
Rating: Summary: Not Kings number one by a long shot Review: Well, this is not my favourite SK Book. 'IT' takes that honour (minus some uncomfortable sex scenes). Insomnia, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, The Talisman, The Green Mile, The Dead Zone are all better than 'The Stand' in my opinion.I didn't find the characters in 'The Stand' as compelling those in 'IT' Some like the Trashcan Man I found annoying and impossible to relate to in any way. Randall Flagg was not the scariest villian I have ever read about. Pretty weak in fact compared to other King creations like It, Atropos, The Library Policeman and The Langoliers. So I guess this story lacked the pure imaginative genius or other King works. In many Stephen King novels I find myself skipping through sections dealing with characters I don't find interesting. There were a lot of them in this book. I happen to be an atheist so I didn't find the obvious biblical implications of this book at all compelling. Just as the use of the UFO conspiracy theory doesn't give the X-files any credibility, so the use of biblical revelation myth, doesn't give 'The Stand' credibility. Apparently King says this novel was inspired by 'Lord of the Rings'. I don't think 'The Stand' goes even close to the wonder and charm of Tolkeins classic.
Rating: Summary: The Stand Uncut Review: I think this is one of Stephen Kings best book I couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: First King book I have ever read Review: I was quite dissapointed after I had spent a good portion of my life reading this book - roughly 1100 pages. It seems that King sold out here; he tries to make The Stand a classic by cramming in all sorts of hit-you-in-the-face allegory which makes the critical reader feel patronized.(Yeah, I understand this is the whole good vs. evil thing, just get to the ending already; I want to know who wins.) I felt like King was Randall Flagg and I was one of his peions willing to do anything he told me; in this case, it was reading through endless pages of un-important sub-plot just to find out what happens in one of the weakest endings I have EVER read. Granted, his characterization is second to none; but, after all, when you have 1100 pages to work with, it's hard not to have descriptive, thorough characters. Lastly, if this book is ever going to be a classic of any merit, King needs to tone down on the profanity. "But this adds to the realistic sense of the novel" - said in a high pitched whiny voice, reminiscent of Piglet from whinnie the pooh. Au contraire, this does NOT add anything to the novel; it only shows how much the civility of Americans has deteriorated. And what's with those pictures that pop up every once in a while. I felt like I was reading a Hardy Boys book. (I'm really pushing that 1,000 word limit.) This is why I had to give it two stars; it was wayyyy too long for the content, and the ending was so mediocre that it warped the space-time continuum which caused an instantaneous black hole to form in the minds of all its readers thereby lowering their IQ's by a couple of points.
Rating: Summary: King at his Best Review: Simply put, if you haven't read Stephen King before (what planet are you from? Obviously not earth) read The Stand. Rich in characters, an epic story of good and evil combined with the modern terrors of technology gone awry. A good way to begin a journey of reading horror fiction. I've read it three times, and it always gets better. Even the mini-series was very good. And the DVD version has a lot of King commentary. Captain Trips rules!
Rating: Summary: Apocalypse Now Review: Did you ever wonder what the end of mandkind would be like? Well, Stephen King does an amazing job of showing you just that...the deterioration of government, the good, evil, and shades of grey in everyone. The book is extremely rich and vivid, giving you a glimpse of true horror...a look into your own soul. There is a character here that represents just about every type of person you know. Which one would you be? King has written what I believe will be his most memorable work. I recommend the hardback as this is a book that will be reread for generations to come. For those who are concerned with the length...take it a step at a time...it is worth the read and keep in mind that King is into detail...he wants you to envision it as vividly as possible and he does an excellent job of it! He develops very normal, everyday characters and then throws the most catastrophic horror in their faces. It was a pleasure to see who would rise and who would fall. If you enjoy supurb imagery and a realistic plot...you'll love this book...it definitely makes you wonder...What If...
Rating: Summary: I loved The Stand Review: I think that this work is Stephen King's best ever piece of writing. It is about a deadly plague that is destroying the world. A bunch of people in the united states survive. They begin to have dreams, all of them are the same. One is about an elderly black woman named Mother Abigail. The other is about a dark man named Randall Flagg. some people see Mother Abigail as their leader, and some see Flagg as theirs. The people that follow Mother Abigail travel to her home in Boulder, Colorado which is renamed the Free Zone, and Flagg's followers go to Las Vegas. This results in an unforgettably chilling battle which will freeze your blood. Along the book, it describes the characters as they migrate to wherever their hearts tell them. I loved this book, though is was over 1,100 pages long.
Rating: Summary: "The Stand", A New Way To Think About "What If" Review: I read this book more times than I care to admit! It is by far, one of my favorite books!
