Rating: Summary: Histerical Review: I love this book. It is funny and intersting. If you like the movie Dogma then you'll love this book.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Hilarious Review: I feel sorry for anyone who is too self-righteous to read this book. It has to be the funniest book I've read in years! In it, the life of Christ is retold by his life-long pal Biff. In the Bible, much of Christ's life is unaccounted for. For what reason? So Christopher Moore could write this book! God definitely has a sense of humor, and would almost certainly be pleased with this book. And while it is entirely fiction, there are parts that, due to ambiguity in the Bible, just might be true. For example, when God moons Moses because nobody can see the face of God and live, but he could maybe look at his back side. Hey, it could have happened.....the Bible never said it didn't.
Rating: Summary: Laugh Out Loud Funny Review: The style of this book reminded me of Douglas Adams, with the jokes coming fast and subtle. It's not for the easily offended, as the Jesus character is portrayed in his teenage years with many human frailties, but when the narrative crosses paths with the actual gospels it is relatively accurate. If you're able to accept it in the spirit which it is written, you are sure to smile if not to laugh out loud.
Rating: Summary: Can you believe a Baptist loved this book? Review: I picked this book up off the shelf and didn't put it back down. I started reading it and found myself laughing out loud right there in front of everyone. Like many of the reviews say, don't get this if you are easily offended. I personally think that God wouldn't have given us the ability to laugh if he didn't expect us to. The beginning hooked me, the middle kinda made me squirm and laugh nervously and the ending made me want to cry. Amidst all the jokes, the author managed to make Jesus's love and patience and total innocence shine through. When I finished I felt like I had just been given a gift. The ability to see Jesus not only as the only perfect person to have walked the earth, but simply as a person. Not until reading this did I ever look at Jesus with this point of view. That he must have laughed, he must have have done adorable things when he was a small child. This book made me think of the human side of the Son of God. Read this book with the knowing that its just that, a book, not a serious gospel, not claiming to be true. Don't look for blasphemy or things to get angry about. Just enjoy a good laugh.
Rating: Summary: Satire At Its Best Review: This is my favorite book in the last year (and I've read about 80). It's creative, dark, funny, poignant. If you ever wondered what happened to Christ during his teenage years and early adulthood, look no farther. It's the best explanation I've heard so far, and is apparently loosely based on currently documented but not well-publicized theories. Not meant for the easily offended when it comes to playing with religious beliefs. This was the first book I read by this author and immediately ran out and read all his others, including his new Fluke, but this one was still my favorite of them all. I've recommended this book to everyone who asks for a recommendation, and those that don't.
Rating: Summary: Christ's Humanity Review: There are few things in this world that serve to strengthen my faith as a Christian than those that discuss Christ's humanity. This has happened for me with the films "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Dogma", and it has happened again with Moore's "Lamb". While these are all works of fiction, they make me think, wonder, question, and ultimately make my faith stronger. While this is a personal opinion, and not meant to dictate how others view their own faith, I firmly believe that Christ's mission to save humanity was made possible by Christ being human and experiencing human faults and frailties. And of course, what brings this all together in the end with "Lamb" is that this book is damn funny.
Rating: Summary: This is a must read! Review: It has been a long time since I laughed out loud by myself, but that is what I did the entire time I was reading this book! Since I have read it, I have either lent it or bought it for EVERYBODY I know! Christopher Moore has accomplished the difficult task of making this book both hilarious and thought pervoking. I insist that you read this! You won't be sorry!
Rating: Summary: Jesus and Biff Review: It's been quite a while since a book has caused me to continuously laugh out loud while reading, but this is the one! My wife and I were away for a few days, and I'm sitting under a beach umbrella at Ocean City, NJ going into paroxysms of mirth, while my poor wife is searching desperately for a place to hide! This is a really funny, funny book, and I encourage anyone with a sense of humor to read it. Despite it's off-beat subject, it's really not irreverant, but gives Jesus a real human side that is sadly missing from the Gospels. I enjoyed this book so much that I'm actively seeking other books by Mr. Moore to read, and have already purchased one. I hope it's as crazy and funny as the one I've just finished!
Rating: Summary: TOO LATE Review: Had my religious upbringing during my formative years been this spell-binding, entertaining, and educational, I'd probably still be a practicing Christian. Extraordinary work. Hey Chris! When is Maggie's Gospel being released??
Rating: Summary: Amusingly irreverant Review: I was raised in a Christian home and went to a Christian school, but as an adult I am not a Christian. This put me in the position of getting most of the references and jokes, yet not being offended by the humor--a good position to be in. I enjoyed this book a lot. I took it on vacation and read it over the course of a couple of evenings. I kept having to stop and read passages aloud to my father-in-law because they were so amusing. The fake exerpts from the Kama Sutra are among the funniest things I've ever read.
