Rating: Summary: Hilarious! I couldn't put it down! Review: "Lamb" is, without a doubt, the funniest book I've ever read. As irreverent as it can be in some parts, it's also respectful and beautiful at times. It's definitely a must-read.
Rating: Summary: My new favorite book Review: This is the funniest book that I've read in as long as I can recall. My wife was sick of me reading it aloud to her, but we're still together.
Rating: Summary: Lighthearted and Fun Review: This was a well-handled book about a topic that almost no one else could handle this way without screwing up. Christopher Moore manages irreverence (pun intended) at the expense of Jesus Christ without doing so in a way that will even offend intelligent Christians. Fundamentalists will not enjoy this book, but they aren't exactly fun-loving people, so that isn't really all that surprising. Christopher Moore has his protagonist telling the story of Josh, the young Messiah who isn't really sure that he is up to the job. The young leader realizes his destiny from near the start of the book, but he manages to be fairly lighthearted about it most of the time. Biff is a great voice, one of the best I've read recently, as he is a loyal sinner, confident in his pal and willing to die for him. The book has a fun time of talking about Josh and Biff wandering around the East and learning about Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. It is fun to see Christopher Moore criticize the faiths, but I would have preferred that he had criticized Buddhism while he was at it. He let it off the hook far too easily. He criticized Judaism, blind Christianity, Hinduism, and even the other Eastern faith, can't remember which one. The book is fun, and it is a good thinker. It did make me pause and consider my life path, which isn't all that common, and it gets a bonus just for that. I love it. Buy it, share it, and think about it. It's great! Harkius
Rating: Summary: Mint Sauce... Review: If you enjoy the works of Christopher Moore (and if you've read any of them, you do), then you should undoubtedly find Lamb just as hearty and satisfying as any of his other titles. If you're just looking for a pseudo-religious book to vent over because you assume anything fictional relating to the stories in the Bible is blasphemous, you can vent over this one, but you may look rather foolish doing it. Lamb is harmless to everyone but the frighteningly fanatical, and they shouldn't be reading this stuff anyway (bad for the blood pressure). Raised Catholic, I found this title warm, hilarious, quite realistic in many places, and heartbreaking toward the end. It's basically somebody's version of the life of Christ from age six on up, and doesn't everybody have their very own interpretation of Christ's life anyway? Each of us must find our own paths to the Light, or in this case, the Lighthearted. It would be good to have been Biff, Christ's childhood pal, to get to see and hear everything around Him, get to know the real Him. Moore does a toprate job, and I envy him for being there--if in (slightly overactive)imagination only. What an undertaking and what a result! However, if you're not sure you'd enjoy this title, read Practical Demonkeeping first. If you enjoy that, you'll love Lamb. And rice. Just three grains...that's all you'll need to get started...
Rating: Summary: Hilarious... yet with a thread of thoughtfulness Review: I absolutely howled with laughter at this book. I mean literally. But at the end of it, I realized that Christopher Moore (of whom I'm a BIG fan, and not just for the funny titles he gives his books) had truly gotten this one right. As a preacher's kid, I have given this subject more thought than I would venture to guess is usual for an Episcopalian. There is one subtle thread of introspection running through this novel about the nature of Christian doctrine (in particular how it has strayed from the original teachings) and indeed about the nature of spiritual beliefs that keeps this novel from being nothing more than a witty poke at Christianity. It IS that, of course--with a title like that, how could it not be?--but it's so much more. I saw the Dalai Lama's public talk at the Fleet Center in Boston last weekend, and was struck by the point he made about religion: at their hearts, all religions are about honesty and love for humanity. Although the idea that Jesus studied Eastern teachings is perhaps beyond far fetched, it reflects well on Moore that he introduces this somewhat silly idea to highlight the greater underlying theme of what is REALLY important about religion, be it Christian, Judaism, or other. I'm not sure most who profess to follow the teachings of Christ have ever really been introduced to Him, but I must say, Moore's version of the Savior is by far the most thoughtful, introspective, accessible, and downright funny that I've ever seen. Anyway, this has joined the ranks of my all-time favorites.
Rating: Summary: Sketchy and Lightweight Review: It's my own fault that I was looking for serious scholarship and not just off-the-cuff invention that wasn't even very funny. The author obviously doesn't know his subject. I much preferred THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF JESUS CHRIST "as told to" Neil Elliott, which found humor in reality and daily living, which was a meatier read and gave you a feeling of fullness when you pushed yourself away from the table. Moore's book is for people who want an intellectual meal out of cream puffs. But that's just me.
Rating: Summary: Humour and Integrity Review: I am studying to be a priest and my sister thought I should read the book for a laugh. It is one of the funniest things I've ever read. My sister was a little concerned that it would offend me, but I have to say that it didn't offend me at all. While Christopher Moore certainly goes way out there in this book, at the same time he managed to uphold the integrity of Jesus. Honestly like the other reviews have said, you have to suspend belief and go where Moore takes you, I promise you it is worth it. Very very very funny.
Rating: Summary: Christopher Moore is brilliant Review: I am an atheist and read this book with a skeptic's eye. As always with Moore, I happily threw away the physical laws of the universe and suspended my disbelief. The man is amazing. He weaves an old tale with sadness and humour like no other author. That I, a person who does not subscribe to the belief of any faith, could find myself actually smiling fondly at the mythos surrounding the Christian religion...Well, let's just say it boggles the mind. Atheist, Agnostic, Apatheist, Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Jew, Islamist, Pagan, Wiccan, Naturist - Whateverist. (Did you think I was even going to attempt to name them all? Get real...) Grab this book and read it cover to cover. It's fantastic.
Rating: Summary: I LOVE this book! Review: It's a great story and absolutely hysterical. I've recommended it to all of my friends.
Rating: Summary: Very Funny Book! Review: This book made me laugh out loud. It's full of humor, and more than a little irreverant towards holy scripture. No doubt some Christians will be offended at the entire premise, a Gospel written by Jesus' boyhood pal Biff! But it is fiction after all. The author has quite an imagination and a great style. And a completely off-the-wall sense of humor! I am looking forward to reading some more of his writings. Recommended!
