Rating: Summary: MOORE STRIKES BIBLICAL GOLD!! Review: Obviously the reviewer from Publisher's Weekly has been myred down in Oprah's Book Club for one book too many. From the moment I picked up LAMB I was laughing out loud and moved by the charming characters. This is Christopher Moore at his hilarious yet heartfelt best. Sure, you have to have a sense of humor, sure you have to be able to laugh at organized religion, sure you have to be able to "think outside the box," but then aren't the mirthful intellecutals the very crowd that Moore is trying to reach? Chris Moore is a well balanced blend of some of America's finest comic/satiric/humor/fantasy writers, and to compare him to writers such as Tom Robbins, Carl Hiaasen, and James Morrow would be accurate but incomplete. Moore is in a comically delightful class all by himself -- assuming, of course, that the reader actually has a sense of humor.
Rating: Summary: Favored Lamb of the Book Flock Review: I am only 1/2 way through Christopher Moore's latest book, "Lamb" - and I have lost track of the number of folks I have told about it. It may be seen as irreverent to some - but I like to think Jesus had a sense of humor. His childhood pall Biff sure does! The work Chris put into this piece is obvious. Hang with me in this paragraph. "Lamb" makes me think of another novel about Jesus, one at the other end of the spectrum of full reverence and serious note called, "The Christ Commission." I was close friends with the author, Og Mandino, and remember how much research and work he said he put into that best-seller. It is extremely obvious the amount of work Chris has devoted and invested in tackling this unique concept of the "missing" years in the life of Jesus. I have not turned a page yet that has not brought a smirk to my face - and often a laugh out loud...at which point I see I am being watched by a stranger at Starbuck's and suddenly I am sharing another review of this book. Though I have heard some concern and even read complaints for it being irreverent, I do not find it in bad taste at all. In fact, I have turned on both spritiual and religious friends to this book. There has also been the interesting surprise that I am finding myself learning things about those long ago times, religions, and regions in this world. Not a book I expect to find as a text book - but some history, geography and some subtile lessons for sure. I am savoring "Lamb" in pieces, wanting to devour it and yet have left-overs. I will be back with another review when I finish it this week. I admit to being a fan of Christopher Moore's and rate this as his best book to date. As a writer myself, the creative way he has successfully woven this all together laced with humor and magic, humbles me.
Rating: Summary: I want Moore! Review: Had been eagerly awaiting Christopher Moore's latest book, especially after hearing just a bit about it. (With a title like this one, it had to be good...). I'm only halfway through Lamb now, but am amazed - it is even better than expected! His writing has continued to grow, as has his ability to develop complex characters. His wicked sense of humor, satire & absurdity shine as always. Lamb is similar to what might happen if "Dogma" was filmed by Tom Robbins on his way to the Forum.....but better!
Rating: Summary: Eloi, Eloi¿what a great book! Review: I'm in between classes at Miami University and I just put down "LAMB" - my first Chris Moore read. If this is "frat-boy" humor, I better pair up at the party house for some studies with this guy. I can't believe the guy at Publisher's Weekly even read the book. The next buck I get from home will go into the coffer for another Chris Moore classic!
Rating: Summary: Great Review: Lamb is one of, if not the, best books I have ever read. I laughed out loud on every page. You won't be able to put it down.
Rating: Summary: A good yarn for good Christians (and you heathens also) Review: Having been a Moore fan for a while, I approached this book w/ some trepidation. Just ANOTHER secular author taking potshots at an easy target; not a challenge for a writer such as Moore. Wow, was I wrong! Easily one of the best books I've ever read! Well written, FUNNY (not as funny as others, but there were some incredible parts), and frankly, touching. I was very impressed with how Moore handle this story. While the death of Christ has always been a moving tale to me, reading it from Biff's perspective was a work of art! As a Christian, I need to tell others, relax, it's just a story, not an attack. Now, go forth and read some more.
Rating: Summary: Top Shelf Spirit Review: Irreverent? Hedes yes, that's why I read Moore! "Lamb" deals with the questions my Sunday school teacher should have been able to answer, but just didn't have the resources. As always, Moore went where all other angels fear to tread - and without losing his halo in the process - he just gave it that classic "Moore" tilt and got down to the business of making me laugh. Biff's recount of Christ's early years, accepted even as tongue-in-cheek gospel, reveals to us the divinity of friendship through all trials and temptations, and the humanity of our world's greatest hero - without tainting the greatest story ever told. A cameo appearance of "Catch" the demon (read Practical Demonkeeping, same author)is an added bonus to a book I just couldn't put down until the last stone was unturned. I put this one on my top shelf by my Vonnegut, not only because it belongs there, but to keep it out of reach of the kids. Sunday school first, and then read a little Moore.
Rating: Summary: The Unexplored side of Christ Review: Lamb is perhaps the most hilarious book that I have ever read. I laughed so hard that my sides ached. Moore offers readers the chance to experience the oh-so human side of Christ's personality through the eyes of his best-friend, Biff--who is anything but a saintly side-kick. I will never be able to look at a picture of Christ again without imagining him with a lizard hanging out of his mouth--and that scene was just in the first chapter. While reading it I was constantly showing passages to my friends--who love the book as well. Lamb is a must read for anyone; if you don't laugh till you cry you should probable have your pulse checked.
Rating: Summary: LAMB is divine. Review: Lamb is Moore's best book yet. I was unable to put it down in order to sleep or work, and have already read it twice. It tends to be a little ridiculous, but isn't that sometimes the point of humor? An open mind is necessary but it is rewarded. Religious satire tends to be a way too dry field, Moore leaves me gasping for more. One thing Moore excels at is the research he puts into this novel. It is easily accessible to non scholars of the history of Christ, particularly the less speculative parts. The afterword on his research is as entertaining as the novel itself. Basically, I loved it. Without exaggeration I can honestly say I laughed out loud, and cried as well. It is a beautiful novel that should garner the author even more fans. I suggest it to any fan of comedy or philosophy.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely hilarious! Review: This is my first Moore novel and I can't believe I have not heard of him before. This book is well written and laugh out loud funny. The characters are great and the humor non-stop. Get this book!
