Rating: Summary: Hannibal Ain't Got Nothin' On This! Review: This is like "Silence of the Lambs" merged with H. P. Lovecraft re-mixed with an acid trip. Tres' cool!

Rating: Summary: Praise Review: i'm jake. 17 in the heartland of america. i have been a fan of jhonen vasquez since he started johnny. i enjoy squee, i feel sick, filler bunny, the bad art collection, zim and of course johnny the homocidal maniac. johnny is a killer. this is not deniable. but at the same time he isn't just the guy who makes the news and is held on trial but let go with johnny cocrin helping him out. he's the kind of killer that takes human life at the expense of time. he shows his true feelings on a society that isn't worthy of the life it's given by whatever god is in the sky. the first comic was just senseless-ness so don't let that generilize the JTHM experience as a whole. there are many good insights into a lifestyle that we all wish we could have sometimes and maybe shows how some of us feel deep down. johnny is a beast, but he is a friend. i commend him for all he does. if you've read this far, i thank you for reading. good bye. jake

Rating: Summary: I'm Smiling Already... Review: One day KidKourage was sitting at her desk in her dorm room, gleefully searching the internet for sites concerning her newest obsession, the cartoon show Invader Zim. I got more than I bargained for, let me tell you...Through my fandom of IZ, I soon became acquainted with the creator, Jhonen Vasquez's, other works of hilarious fiction. After viewing various scanned panels on the internet, I fell in love with Mr. Vasquez's drawing style, his sense of humor, and his complete and utter disregard for the imposed morality of today's society. I was hooked, and now needed to find a way to get my parents to allow me to purchase a comic titled 'Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.' Imagine how hard *that* was. Still, as you must have figured out since I am reviewing this book, I eventually triumphed. Now, what to say about JtHM? How can I possibly begin to describe this uniquely twisted tale? Well, I may as well start off by introducing you to the title character. Reader, this is Johnny C. If you're nice to him, which few people take the time to be, maybe he'll let you call him 'Nny. One of his greatest goals in life is to become 'as cold as the moon'--emotionless and machinelike. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things getting in his way. For one thing, there's a supernatural evil entity living behind one of the walls of his house which will escape if said wall is not constantly painted with a coat of fresh blood. For another, Johnny's own 'head voices'--and we all have our own menagerie, though some of us deny it--are working for the wall beast and wish to corrupt his mind further. And, for *another*, there are just so many pointlessly stupid people in this world that get on 'Nny's nerves to the point where he is forced to brutally murder them. Yes, that's right. As if you couldn't tell from the title, Johnny is a homicidal maniac. With great enthusiasm and uncanny skill, 'Nny tortures and kills those who fail to treat him with the respect due to any human being. However, though this book is indeed gruesome and violent at times, there is some real philosophical merit here. You can't help but want to root for Johnny, despite his murderous tendencies, because his character is so tragically human. Once a brilliant artist, his memory has been erased and his purpose clouded. Poor, poor misguided 'Nny is doomed to live his life as a 'flusher,' a being whose purpose is to absorb the hatred, stupidity, and general waste of society and to burn it off into oblivion, thus saving the masses from having to deal with the negative products of their own ignorance. However, 'Nny is completely unaware of this role that he plays, and even Satan himself agrees that whoever decided to cast *him* as a flusher was more incompetent than even GW. You see, our boy Johnny is a rather...independent person. Instead of simply allowing the entity that controls him to completely take over, 'Nny is determined to search for answers, to regain sovereignty over his actions, and to simply be himself. Of course, that's just scraping the surface. I could go on for hours and hours about the amazingly complex creature that is Johnny C, but you'd probably get bored and stop reading. Many likely already have. Anyway, 'Nny is joined in his story by Squee, the cute little neighbor boy with the giant eyes and tendency to have horrific nightmares. Squee, along with his rather frightening-looking teddy bear Shmee, is the focus of his very own comic series, which I would recommend just as much as JtHM. And then there's the lovely Devi D, who has the unfortunate luck to come back to 'Nny's house with him after a date. Persuaded by his evil head-voices, Johnny attempts to end the relationship in a very permanent way; Devi unceremoniously beats him bloody and escapes to begin a new life full of paranoia. Rounding out the cast of recurring characters is Tess R, who also has rotten luck with men--though she's mostly recovered now. The Director's Cut also features the creation of Johnny C himself, Happy Noodle Boy, whose random insanity will make you laugh out loud. Horrendously drawn and incredibly incoherent, Happy Noodle Boy is the insane person's insane person, screaming obscene remarks at passerby and generally disturbing everyone around him. He's silly. If you buy JtHM: The Director's Cut--and you have the proper dark, sarcastic sense of humor--you won't be disappointed. The character development is masterful, the storylines are as thought-provoking as they are hilarious, and the artwork is stunning for all its simplicity. You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll quote Noodle Boy, causing people around you to stare! And you'll always come back for more.
Rating: Summary: Johnny- a rolemodel Review: I first read of JTHM at camp last summer. Since then, I've been looking for him everywhere. Extremely funny!
Rating: Summary: Ultimately disappointing Review: JTHM is quite famous, so I thought I'd check it out. It has some good points: - excellent artwork - occasionally extremely funny However these are not enough to make it in any way worth reading. It is extremely violent, way past the point of being funny or interesting. It's really quite sick and seems very bitter about little things too. It takes a lot for me to not finish a book, and only American Psycho and JTHM have that honour. It's sick, vicious, over-the-top, bitter, pathetic, unfunny, and at times downright evil. Only finished half of it, and would not recommend to it anyone.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I borrowed a copy of this from my brother and LOVED it. (I also have a very morbid sense of humor...) I'm a big fan of Jhonen's. Anyways, this is basically the story of Johnny, aka Nny, who is a homicidal maniac.. needless to say. He lives with two styrofoam doughboys (Note: Jhonen has two styrofoam doughboys too!:)) who are basically the voices that speak to him.. and there is a dead rabbit nailed to the wall (Nailbunny) who is basically his sole voice of reason. I was laughing hysterically throughout the whole thing for the most part. As the story progresses, Johnny seems to be less 'insane', per se.. he seems to have more reason in doing what he does. I HIGHLY recommend this to you. Buy it. :)
Rating: Summary: Violent and gory, yet endearing... Review: Yesterday, I bought issues 1,2,3,4 and 6 of "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac", and since then I have not been able to get enough of them. Johnny is indeed violent with a thirst for blood, but he also thirsts for revenge against those who hurt his feelings. The much talked about violence in the series is effective, but not frightening. It's highly exaggerated (had Vasquez made it realistic and frightening, then the messages he tried to express would have gotten lost). This is not ABOUT the violence--it's about characters who desperately desire acceptance by the mainstream population (inspite of their own attempts to convince themselves that they're in fact ethicaly and intelectually superior to the rest of society). Through humor, a haunting visual style, and yes, violence, Mr. Vasquez has created characters with loads of depth and emotion. They feel, ache, love, hurt, cry, kill, and most of all, they think. It's hard to dislike Johnny. He's sort of an antihero, representing the secret desires of everyone who experianced humiliation in high school. Unless you're one of those who enjoyed picking on other kids, in which case, you'll most likely hate Johnny. But then again, who cares what you think anyway???
