Rating: Summary: ..JtHM.. Review: Well, Ive been a HUGE fan of all Jhonen's work, and I must say..this is by far his greatest achievement. I love this book, so much, i wont let my friends borrow it! Anyways, if your'e into that "darker" humor thing, this is for you. It's about Johnny. He's a skinny, insane, morbidly dressed youth. He's got issues, BIG ones. But somehow, anyone who reads this can relate to him in some form or another. There is lots of gore, blood, and just plain horrific brutality. Sounds splended, right? Oh,yeah..and he kills people- a lot. [This book is a collection of all 7 issues of JtHM. It explores the mind of a psycho and also somehow gives you lots of pain in your stomache after youv'e laughed so hard from it!! IT DESERVES THE 5 STARS!]
Rating: Summary: I can't say enough about Jhonen Vasquez!!!! Review: This was great. Jhonen Vasquez is a genius and he has a great mind. If you are looking for more things Jhonen did you should check out Invader Zim on NICK. It is a show that is in the same style as JTHM. It's halarious<(I think it's spelled wrong). It's a must have item if you are a JV fan or if you are just plain human!
Rating: Summary: My Opinion Review: The book that turned me on to comics again in my adult (well, sort of adult) life was "Noogies," by Roman Dirge, a book about a "cute little dead girl" named Lenore. When I finished devouring (no, not literally) Lenore's story, I decided to branch out into other similar comics. . . After Johnny, I'm not so sure I want to branch anymore. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book (I gave it 5 stars!) but there were places when I found it was just a little excessive. I mean, almost every single frame in parts of the book showing yet another death with yet another weapon producing yet another blood spill? I mean, I like a good murder story just as well as the next guy, but there aren't even any humorous parting words from the victims! Just lots of gore! (I've seen gore--I've been a nurse!) I just don't see how this is something new. I'm assuming that people who would be attracted to JTHM stories are also fans of horror movies or sitcoms, where we've all seen these deaths before, in color or in black & white, with good effects or with poor effects. It saddens me to say I've become desensitized to cartoons of people being murdered, maimed, tortured, and subjected to food taste tests, but I am. I do enjoy Johnny's encounters with poor Squee immensely, and grin over his theoretical rambling with himself and with others. The parts where Johnny attempts suicide but never quite makes it are also funny. (I'm assuming, again, that people who would read JTHM have, at one point in their lives, been depressed or even suicidal. And judging by the fact that you're reading this review now, we've been there before.) And his failed love attempt with Devi, the one who got away! It just gets you in the heart! My final opinion: If you like the genre, read it! and you'll laugh. But if you've ever experienced illegal drugs, skip over Happy Noodle Boy--you've already heard and spoken all of that nonsense while you were tripping.
Rating: Summary: ah jester... Review: What an excellent defense for your little homicidal goth icon. Actually, "American Psycho" was one of the most hated books of the 1990s, perhaps because people like you can't read unless it's accompanied by poorly-drawn stick figures. Go back to the mall, kid, you've got old ladies to scare.
Rating: Summary: much better than american psycho thats for sure... Review: people misjudge johnny, yes hes insane, yes hes of a sick mind but its a book. a comic book about taking out anger on people that push your buttons. its humor... american psycho was written and the world praised it. that book had no humor in it whatsoever and it was the story of a rich little yuppy who you want dead not just because hes a mass murderer but because your tired of hearing him talk and rattle on. hes anoying. the book "american psycho was a waist of paper and i dont know how it got published. johnny is just, i dunno, sick twisted and all together funny...
Rating: Summary: Damn! This was a great book Review: This is by far, the BEST book of any kind I have ever read. It has a high intellectual thought provoking text about it. It is not just a blood book like some think. But, I think every one who needs to read it, needs to read it. Read it if you answer yes to one or more of these: a.I like Invader Zim b.I have no problem with cussing c.Enjoy intellect d.If you can read. I like this book better than the SQUEE!'s though. Happy Noodle Boy is my favorite ::Points at Noodle Boy shirt::. I don't like Anne Gwish much. Also, BUY THE FILLER BUNNIES.
Rating: Summary: Fun Fact: It's not a moose... Review: ...But you will still want this book! Johnny the Homicidal Maniac is one of the funniest and most thought provoking forms of dark humor I've had the pleasure of reading. (Oh, just to let you know, Jhonen Vasquez isn't as messed or outcasted as some make him out to be.) The book collects all seven issues of the first, (and probably not the last) series of the JtHM comic books. These aren't quite the Super Man or Simpsons type stuff, but don't get the impression it's limited to the "Spooky People." Heck, it makes fun of them too. No one is safe from Jhonen's wrath. Through the character of Johnny C, (or Nny) we get to see all the people we love to hate get caught, tortured, and killed. And do we cry? Nope! We laugh. Why not? For those who think it's childish and disgusting, for all I know, you're probably right. But that's why this is in the form of a graphic novel, and not a text book. Ees fun! But there is more than violence and laughter. Further on in the book, we find Nny's acknowledgement that he is beyond redemption and isn't happy with himself. It brings us deeper into Nny's character, and wonder if he is the victim of his own choices... Oh, by the way, Nny isn't goth. It's a black n white comic, but he really isn't pale. Johnny and his colorful cast of voices aren't the only ones who get the spotlight. Both Squee and Devi get supporting roles that lead to their own spin off comic books. (Highly recommended as well!) And then there's Happy Noodle Boy. From what I've heard, he was created to tick someone off. Far from a masterpeice, but you'll laugh anyway, won't you? Hee hee. Then there's Anne Gwish, the "trendy goth" hypocrite who likes to pretend she's deep. The only things missing from this collection are the "Meanwhile" series, and Wobbly Headed Bob. They come packed in with the complement series, Squee! So if you like this one, check out Squee too. Now go, and buy this book!
Rating: Summary: LONG LIVE NOODLE BOY ! AND HIS RAIN OF.......NOODLES! Review: Johny the homicidal maniac has to be one of the best graphic novels I've ever read. The man who does this book definitly is disturbed (as u can see from invader zim). anyone with a sense of humor should read this book.
Rating: Summary: idiotic, juvenile, repetitive, unoriginal... Review: The reviewer who said this is the comic-book equivalent of the Insane Clown Posse couldn't be more right. I have no problem with violent satires of modern society--as a matter of fact, "American Psycho" is one of my favorite books--but JTHM is just idiocy masquerading as something deep and meaningful. The artist/writer, Jhonen Vasquez, seems to be nursing a decades-old resentment of the popular kids who picked on him in high school for being a mopey Goth--thus, the "Johnny" character--and is now taking revenge by putting out this comic. Maybe if there was something original kicking around in these pages it'd be redeemable, but it's a cut-and-paste pattern of gushing blood and severed limbs, with the obligatory passages where Johnny (or "Nny," if you prefer) attempts to wax intellectual (to no avail, unfortunately). Vasquez tries really hard to poke fun at the whole "Gothic" subculture but ends up just glamorizing it...then again, what more can you expect from a comic that's a primary fixture in Hot Topics nationwide? Anyone with a brain should seek out something by R. Crumb and leave this for the recycling bin.
Rating: Summary: I will regurgitate no peas! Review: When I went searching for more works from the creator of Invader ZIM, a friend referred me to JtHM, or Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. The title worried me a bit, but I bought the Director's Cut anyway. I was immediatly in love with the book. There was a real story, and a real truth to it. It wasn't a crappy children's fairy tale where everything worked out in the end, it was a true-to-life story about how a seacrh for answers will mostly lead to more questions. But I digress. The book itself is incredible, the story vivid, and the art as great as I'd dared to hope. ... If you DO buy this book (which I wholly reccomend) be warned: 1) "Gory" deaths abound, but not gratuitous violence 2) LOTS of language. If you are old enough to see an R-rated movie, you can read this. 3) You will laugh until you a) piss your pants, or b) get a heart attack and die a lonely, filthy death. Also check out the SQUEE! collection.
