Rating: Summary: Oh, the irony in death Review: Johnny the Homicidal maniac, will probably never win an award for its efforts, but it's funny none the less. Johnny the deranged and homicidal main character just looking for acceptance finds more and unusual ways to make a persons death come to them with style. The whole story line is ironic [stinky] pulled together to explain just why exactly Johnny or Nny is killing these "innocent" people. It ranges from brutal murder, to conversations with his victims about why it is necessary for him to take their lives away from them. (he has to keep the wall of blood wet, and therefore is always in need of blood. that makes sense doesn't it?) It also depicts his colorful conversations with nail bunny, and the two psycho pigs about how he should kill himself or not. Many pages are filled with dialog expressing Johnny's hate for the world that rejected him, which are reasons greatly explanatory, yet at times circumstantial. (Johnen gave Johhny a date, yea, and he was happy, so how did he show that? he's a homicidal maniac, what do you think?) The only thing that i can say i saw wrong with the story line is that through the beginning it doesn't really seem to be going any where, just a bunch of random killings, and Johnny rambling on about how he had to do it, and how humanity disgusts him. It happens in the end though it seems that Johnen finally found a direction for taking this story, yea, he sent Johnny to hell and tells him that it is basically his destiny to be d@mned for eternity. And shortly after the series ends, and two spinoffs are produced with my favorite Squee and Devi.
Rating: Summary: Not so much darkly humorous as it was whiny and pretentious. Review: I picked up this comic based on the raving reviews here ... I love dark humor and things that are sick and twisted, so I thought this would be great. I was, unfortunately, very disappointed. This book takes itself way too seriously to be fun. Johnny constantly whines and rails about the reasons he kills. Every time Johnny goes off on one of his pseudo-intellectual tirades, I had to roll my eyes. Boo hoo, poor Johnny... no one understands him. Because of this pretentiousness, the over-the-top violence just doesn't work. The author's other title "Squee..." works much better in this regard precisely because it doesn't pretend to be anything but a wacky, violent romp ...
Rating: Summary: All Worship Nny!!! Review: jhonen Vasquez is a creative genius. His artwork is disturbing yet thoughtful. You're never quite sure whether to sympathize with Johnny or comdemn him for his crimes. I found the entire book vastly amusing and i recommend everyone to read this book!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding! Review: This is one of the funniest graphic novels I have ever seen. The artwork is crude -but in a very good way- and the characters are great. You've got Squee, Johnny -you can call him nny- and his comic creation Happy Noodle boy. You should also pick up Squee's Wondeful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors along with this. Both are great.
Rating: Summary: The Purpose of Violence Review: Jhonen Vasquez has really given us an amusing gift with Nny and his horrendous insanity. The violence is well worth the creative storyline, shocking us, while letting us see that sometimes it's necessary to show the more gruesome side of life. It also gives those of us who've been put down by social maggots the chance to see on paper what we've always wanted to do to them, but have never been able to. It leaves me with a warm, fuzzy feeling inside, knowing that some horribly rude people will read this and see their exact words mirrored in the speech of those nasty people that Nny eliminates. What's sad is that some will read it and misguidedly think themselves the abused, and not the abuser. Let us hope that after reading this, we will all realize that words can cut deeper than the sharpest dagger, and change our behaviors accordingly to consider the fragile minds of those around us.
Rating: Summary: A review by a neopolitan pyro-maniacle cocker spaniel. Review: Buy this freakin' book. You laugh hard and good at book. Book make you gag, book make you scream. This is a very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, irregular book that you wil grow to be suspicious of. Yes. Heck yes you will.
Rating: Summary: Fun and Inspired Review: I suppose there's not much left to say about our beloved homicidal maniac that hasn't already been said, so I'll just let you know my opinion...I think JTHM is great. Jhonen's comics are funny, energetic, and always creatively interesting. Jhonen's art is cartoonish but complex at the same time, and he makes full use of cinematic angles and shadowing. But probably what I like most about Jhonen is that he's never afraid to make fun of himself, and he never falls victim to taking himself too seriously....buy this great book and see what I mean.
Rating: Summary: bloody....creative...appealing. Review: When I bought this book, I was pulled in by the stylish art and twisted humor. Amazing. I loved it with all meh brains. (I think I have some..) I've only had it for 10 months and pages are already falling out. (I'm the one freaking out about holding the book correctly)You may call me the obsessor. yeah. um.. heh. Jhonen vasquez has been my number one favorite artist right next to Jamie Hewlett and Roman Dirge. ..or he's just tricking my mind into think so. Being of one of those advid fanart and fanfiction artists. Very drooly and SQUISHY. arrgh. I'm the "offical screamer" in the radio drama even! So you people who were gonna read it, but didn't....GET OFF YOUR LAZY BUTTOCKS AND GO BUY JtHM! RARGH! I'M HUNGRY. ook. why was the caps lock on???
Rating: Summary: Johnny now and 4ever! Review: Wow! JTHM was truly a work of art. Once u pick it up u won't be able to put it down. Jhonen Vasquez was a pure genius with this book. He blended the seriousness of Johnny with humor and killing. But that's what Johnny is all about. The illustrations are excellent and the plot superb. There's no focus on the killing, but also not on Johnny's problems. It mixes well together and the characters are great. If you are debating on Squee or JTHM, get both, but JTHM first!
