Rating: Summary: Great Novel.... Review: But it was certainly not meant to stand on its own. It was written to lend history to the ABC television mini series "Rose Red". The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer is a great tool to understanding the mini series, as well as the mini series served to answer some of the questions the book left you begging.Joyce, the "author" of this book, was the lead scientist in the miniseries "Rose Red". In the novel she notes that she is going in to the house, to reawaken the "dead cell" -a house that the haunting has gone dormant in. The movie picks off where the editors notes leave off. The movie on the other hand starts with the assumption that everyone has read the novel, and understands the tainted history of the now haunted house. In a perfect world, the novel would be sold with the 6 hour miniseries as a companion piece. While the book is an enjoyable, and creepy read, it is enhanced with the viewing of "Rose Red".
Rating: Summary: A Rather Interesting Visit To Rose Red Review: The life of Ellen Rimbauer and Rose Red is very captivating. It was a page turner that I was very hard pressed to put down until the less than satisfying end. It gives a lot of history on Ellen, her husband and how she came to be the person she became. It also gives some interesting theories of why Rose Red "is who she is." I don't know if I necessarily believe in the paranormal but I would definately not be willing to test any theories by staying in that house! A very good read. Be prepared to do it in one sitting ... maybe with a light on or two.
Rating: Summary: Ellen Rimbauer's "Rose Red" The Mysteries... Review: I have now had time to read this amazing book. This takes on more of a look at the Rimbauer's interesting past history, from the characters Stephen King created in the mini series "Rose Red." We know now that the secret is out, even when we all thought the amazing Stephen King wrote the book we were wrong it ends up being another fantastic author Ridely Pearson. He did a stunning job of creating this interesting family history. This book goes through the start to finish of the joining of Ellen and her husband, and the building of Rose Red. At first Ellen and her husband, not to mention Rose Red is the talk of the town. Till the house seems to take control over them all. Kidnapping women, and the death of other men. Ellen is torn between her husband and her best friend and companion Sukeena, and Ellen is the secret to Rose Red. We go through all her emotions and torments over the years of living in Rose Red (Which is based on the famous Winchester House in California which I had the pleasure of touring this past year). I thought it was very thrilling to see people really "surviving" back at the time, and that it wasn't just a game show. More and more secrets to Rose Red are revealed throught this book and I highly recommend you reading it. Ellen's story is captivating, and I think from after watching Rose Red you'll understand her a lot more. I've also come to a lot of different opinions and conclusions to what the mysteries of the house is and are, but I'll let you decide that for yourself. Some of it is quite slow, however, I would have liked all the "editing" notes towards the end by Dr. Joyce Reardon. I can see why they are there, however, I think it would have been more interesting if all of the entries were kept in the diary. I did like the Steven Rimbauer entery, and what he had found at "Rose Red" after their entrance into the house. But if you can get your hands on the book I highly recommend it. Looking back on my previous review I kind of laugh now back then I was more upset that others seemed to bash the book, because they thought they were dooped into believing the story is real. If you read the book and watch the movie carefully you can pretty much come to the conlusion that its not. It's an extremely interesting take on a haunted house that's based on a real house. So again pick up this book and read it and then have the fun of watching Stephen Kings Rose Red all over again!
Rating: Summary: Rose Red Fact or Fiction? Review: I agree, don't insult our intelligence. I truly thought the book was true. The movie was incredible and one of the better mini-series by Stephen King. I was very impressed with the book and with the movie. The book was one that I could not put down. Great read! Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Annoyed Review: Having just finished the book and having watched the mini-series, I to was under the false notion that Rose Red was a real story. Not until I read the fine print on the back of the book did I see the word "fiction" printed by the bar code and immediately became frustrated. Not to mention, having reached the entry for April 19, 1917...yes my curiousity was peaked and I wanted to read more of the entries from that time, therefore checking out the webpage listed in the book. Check the links on this page for the various professors listed and they all take you to the same page for Rose Red. I personally am annoyed at the fact that this has been contrived, particularly using a person with a supposed PhD to add authenticity to the claims. I too saw the special however before the mini-series making me believe even more it was based on a true diary. I guess I was wrong along with many other readers.
Rating: Summary: If you liked Rose Red, you'll love this book! Review: First of all I have to laugh at all the people that thought this was real. I suppose you all went looking for the Blair Witch too? I watched the mini series Rose Red before I purchased this book. Rose Red was incredible and this book helped explain stuff that the mini series did not. This book, like the mini series, is just purely entertainment. It made for a good read and I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: http://www.thornewoodcastle.com/movie.htm Review: Does Blair Witch ring a bell? This story is entirely fiction & http://www.thornewoodcastle.com/movie.htm shows the real "castle". Great job Stephen King...writing a book & a mini-series that gets people to believe such fiction.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed, and a little angry. Review: I saw the "documentary" on Rose Red, and went to Amazon.com to order this book. After reading everyone's VERY HELPFUL reviews, I now realize that the documentary was just a trailer for the Stephen King series. What makes me angry is the fact that one was led to believe that the diary really existed - there were interviews with the "editor" who talked about Ellen Rimbauer's writing style, etc. etc. And even though the pictures of Ellen Rimbauer looked too modern to me, the documentary managed to convince me that this was all on the up and up. Now I wouldn't buy this book for 25 cents. Many thanks to all the reviewers who warned me off!
Rating: Summary: Stephen King and P.T. Barnum Review: With this book Stephen King proves once again that there is a sucker born every minute. I think that both the book and the mini-series are both examples of genius and creativety on a large scale Mr. King proves that he still tell a good story and scare the pants off of us. Which is just what we want him to do. I'll bet he has read some of the reviews on this web site and has been having a good laugh at some people's expense. Bravo to you Mr. King! P.S I recently found out that Stephen King is not the real author of this book I guess I was fooled too!
Rating: Summary: Rose Red is Thornewood Castle Review: I did enjoy the book. For those of you wondering, it is fiction. The real Rose Red house is Thornewood Castle, located in Washington. I believe somewhere near Tacoma, Seattle area? Just get on your computers and do a search for Thornewood Castle, and you will see that it is a real place where the movie was filmed. They are also a B&B, so you can actually stay over in one of the rooms in which the movie was shot. Hope this helps some of you with your question of fact or fiction. :)
